The Top Reasons to Join a Goldfish Society

Why you should join your local goldfish society or club. Here are some examples of what you can gain from joining your local fish club. If you keep fancy goldfish it is definitely worth becoming part of your club.
Some clubs are the
AMGK - Association of midlands goldfish keepers
BAS - Bristol aquarist society
NGPS - Northern goldfish and pondkeepers society
NEGS - North east goldfish society
GSGB - Goldfish society of Great Britain
If you want to show your goldfish in the U.K. you will need to join one of these clubs. But you can join from anywhere in the world.

I don't know of any goldfish societies, but the ones in your area look amazing! I only keep a Ranchu Goldfish so I'm not much of a Goldfish obsessed person, but I'd prolly still enjoy some Goldfish Societies here in Australia! Awesome video mate! Keep up the amazing work Mountain Goldfish! 👌

Great too see you back on KZbin :) I find BAS amazing, I missed few meetings recently but I have learned a lot from the newsletters and meetings :) I wish wish we had any goldfish club in Ireland.

Hello ive just come across your channel where you give a lot of information which is exactly what beginners need to hear ? your quite right when you say about going to a meeting or a show and talking to those with experience , there is quite a lot on facebook and you tube but personally id much prefer to visit someone have a cup of tea and a chat . i have liked and subscribed and will look forward to watching more of your videos . Hi. I just discovered your channel with a search for Medaka Rice Fish and I'm delighted to find that you are in the UK. I've been out of the hobby since I was a child and am really wanting to get back into it. I'm most interested in small temperate fish and shrimp as heating costs add up. As a first step I decided to contact a local fish club here in Glasgow as I value face to face interaction, but I'm at a loss to find any. Any information on clubs up here and online groups you would recommend would be extremely helpful. All the best from a beautiful sunny and frosty Scotland.

Thanks for the message. I think a lot of people are looking in to temperate snow with the cost of energy going up. Rice fish are a very good option and I think paradise fish are as well. Of course my live is for the fancy goldfish so that it what I am more knowledgable in. If you want to join any goldfish societies then I can point you in the right direction. The Bristol aquarist society hold a monthly zoom meeting which I can invite you to. There are a few Scottish goldfish breeders / showers that join us in our monthly meeting and talk fish.

Evening fella. Just watched your video on joining goldfish societies. I have recently joined up to the GSGB. I’m new to the hobby. I keep Ranchu in a tank in my living room but your video got me thinking about attending shows etc to build Up my knowledge. I also think one of my Ranchu is a stunner! I’d love to enter her into a competition some day. Even if it’s just so others can see her and give me steer on how I can look after her the best I can. I’m based in North Yorkshire and wondered if you knew of any clubs close to me where they would have shows/auctions ? Appreciate any help you can offer. Many thanks, Joe.

Hi Joe, I have been doing a little digging before getting back to you so apologies it has taken longer than normal. So, I think NEGS (north east goldfish society) would have been your closest but they have gone now. Sadly all our clubs up and down the country are struggling. I would however suggest you join BAS (Bristol Aquarist Society) they are a very good goldfish club for people who don’t have a club close by. We have a monthly zoom meeting and even had a show online last year. A very active group with a wealth of knowledge. The zoom calls are brilliant and usually have around 25 of us in the call. Let me know if you would like to join and I’ll point you in the right direction. It’s only £12 a year!

@@Mountain_Aquatics no I didn't cause there is nothing within an area I could travel to and I am really only interested in auctions and sales direct from breeders as sick of buying fish online.

@@wishitwasallflat201 I am in north Wales. So none near me either. One you could still benefit from is the BAS. With the meetings being uber zoom you can still attend and join in. And you’d then get to know the breeders etc. it’s only £12 a year as well and you’d get newsletters etc

Hey, I love your videos and I am seriously considering joining a club because of you. But I am wondering if it is the right thing for me, a future goldfish pet owner. I'm not interested in breeding or showing as such but I am planning on getting 2-3 pets to care for their entire lives. What can someone like me get out of a club please? 😁 There are none near to me in Yorkshire so I'd probably join either Midlands, Bristol or GSGB. Do you think I would actually benefit from this or is it overkill for pet ownership only? Thanks!

We do have people who keep pet goldfish in the clubs, but they do tend to be more aimed at breeders and those who show their fish. As somebody just keeping fish I would suggest the Bristol aquarist society and here is what would benefit you. A monthly zoom meeting with some of the most qualified and experienced goldfish keepers in the world where you can gain lots of knowledge and ask any questions you need to know and get real valuable feedback. You would be able to attend any goldfish shows which are amazing to see and also you would then be able to buy goldfish that are from the best stock in the U.K. for a fraction of the price you would pay in a pet shop. You can also get in contact with breeders of the type of goldfish you want to keep. And on top of that you would get a monthly newsletter emailed to you and you’d be able to join an exclusive members only Facebook group.
