After this album cycle, I think Rodrigo has three different places she could go with her career. A: She could not change a thing about herself and just make sour part 2 B: She could go straight pop and be another Demi or Selena or C. She could delve more into alt/rock and be another Avril or Hayley. I like C.

I dunno man, “Brutal” hit me like a ton of bricks. It was my most-listened to song of 2021. I’m nearly 30 now, but when I was 17 I was a horrifically insecure kid and I saw a lot of myself from when I was in high school in Rodrigo’s lyrics. I totally get that it’s pretty tongue-in-cheek, but I think there are some moments of genuine anxiety in there. Most of my sense of humor, even today, is self-deprecation, so “Brutal” reads a lot like that to me: hiding the truth behind the wit. She's gotten deeper, and smokier, and she sounds... honestly, she sounds like Lorde or Florence + the Machine, it's REALLY impressive. 2 -- Essentially, my takeaway is that this is Todd's "Closer" of 2021. In a year full of stress, and anxiety, and tiredness, when we all feel SO MUCH OLDER... fuck it, I want a song about two stupid kids, young and in love. And, y'know -- it doesn't hurt that the song is just such a great 90-esque soft rock jam. It would fit perfectly fine next to Lisa Loeb's "Stay" or Natalie Imbrugalia's "Torn". I think there's a distinction to be made between a song that has vibes and a song that has nothing BUT vibes. "Good Days" is a vibey song, but it's also rich and purposeful and sounds great *as a song.* "Heat Waves" just has vibes, and vibes alone are listless.

He's definitely a *jazz* guy, as in I wouldn't even blink at seeing him featuring on or producing a Sungazer album (Sungazer being a jazz fusion/electronic band featuring KZbin's own Adam Neely), or even producing, like, a fucking Cynic album (Cynic being a long-running death metal-jazz fusion band with weird, ethereal, vocoder vocals). He's the kind of guy who lives, breathes, eat, drinks, shits, sleeps on, and gargles music every single minute of his life, so him having an encyclopedic knowledge of basically any genre wouldn't surprise me for a second.

The song went gold in 2021 and double platinum a couple of weeks ago. I think going gold in the U.S. should allow a song to qualify. #22 that week was a Drake song that never went gold in the U.S. or UK; it went "silver" in the latter, because apparently that's a thing there.

Todd said on Twitter in 2021 that he decided not to count holiday songs in a top 20 weekly ranking anymore (probably 'cause they ALWAYS show up yearly and block a ton of songs from being top 20 hits), so not only were Christmas songs excluded but Halloween songs were as well. Michael Jackson's song Thriller was somewhere within the Hot 100 top 20 in late October or early November in the same week that Meet Me at Our Spot was #21. Since Thriller was not counted as a top 20 hit based on his new rule, it bumped Willow's song to number 20! So to him it counts as a true hit song.

Absolutely! What Todd excels at isn't in his taste or convincing you to follow it; no one can or should do that. What Todd is a master at is teaching his audience HOW to think about music. Asking the right questions, looking at the fuller picture of the artist, the smaller moments in a song, etc. While we can still respect our differences in musical tastes, Todd helps everyone elevate their conversation around music.

I think the situation with My Ex's Best Friend is that it's a rebound quadrangle. The previous relationships were the singer (guy A, represented by MGK) was with a girl (girl A) and his "boy" (guy B, represented by Blackbear) was with another girl (girl B). Both the guys and the girls are best friends. An unknown time ago, both couples broke off but the friendships remained. Now guy B has hooked up with girl A. Girl B gets lonely and decides to hang drunk with guy A, since they know each other and her usual drinking buddy is part of the reason she wants to get drunk. They end up hooking up too, and now relationships are strained everywhere because there are so many unknowns. Who's just hooking up to make someone else jealous? Who's hooking up because they miss someone else? Who actually feels the relationships? Who want the old relationships back? Is anyone cheating with their exes? Are the friendships still intact and will they remain intact if this gets even more dramatic? And I'm sure at least one of them, possibly all of them, are wondering who they actually want to have in their life, and spend their time with.

Really did not expect Willow Smith at number 1. I've been following her music since 2016 so to me she is still one of those underrated artists in the indie/punk genre. I think her having money actually gives her the freedom to just create art and not trying to aim for hits which is , honestly, refreshing. You know there isn't really a hidden motive in her album releases. Will tried making her play the industry game with Whip My Hair. She ended i'm quitting the artform in protest in honor of her mental stability( She's open up about feeling overworked and suicidal during that era). All of her young adult albums are her slowly falling back in love with the medium.

The one upside of how being a rock star/rags to riches music superstar has been falling out of reach for anyone who isn't benefiting from nepotism is that the people benefiting from nepotism already have money and therefore don't need to give a crap about following trends. Willow happened to hit a trend ahead of time, but that's called _making_ trends, not following them. The downside is that, of course, it's going to crowd out diversity of thought. Hopefully things change but I don't know how that's going to happen.

Todd has that rare effect on me where I may wait a little bit to watch the videos but that’s only because I want to holistically enjoy them and not pay half my attention. Like someone else in these comments, you may not like doing them but your top lists are some of if not the most enjoyable made at the end of every year. Great work 🙌

I was ready to prattle on about how "Happier Than Ever" connected with me despite being a dude that has never dated, as the ex in the song did things very similar to a toxic family member I have since disassociated myself with and Billie articulated a lot of my feelings towards them. Obviously I can't do that since it's not on the list, but I love that artists like Billie Eilish are willing to experiment amidst a radio culture that is so heavily centralized on increasingly narrow definitions of pop music.

my irrelevant opinions: 10. LOVE THIS SONG, I remember staying up late the night before the album release watching murder documentaries so I could listen to the album the second it came out. First track blew me away. 9. Wasn’t crazy about this one, I genuinely like the beat and actually like the non-chorus parts, but that chorus is so grating to me. But I agree with you about her being one of the best singers and artists alive! Also wasn’t aware that it was for her son; will def change my perspective on the next listen. 8. I really liked this one when it first came out, but wasn’t crazy about blackbear's part, mainly because of the lyrics; didn’t make that much sense to me. But yeah, it is a really fun song and the beat is pretty addictive. Also agree with the confusion around the love triangle- that’s what kind of turned me off the song at first. 7. Such an amazing song, it grew on me as time passed. The male vocals at the end made the song for me- so beautiful and addicting. I had no idea Collier did that. SZA makes great music always, of course, but Collier totally topped it even with that small vocal feature. 6. I just started getting into Kendrick Lamar and other rappers like Kanye and Kid Cudi, but I adore what I’ve heard so far. I heard of this song, but didn’t listen to it until that lil snippet in your video. I liked it; will definitely go on my school playlist. Rooting for Keem! 5. This was a fun song, I never got too much into it but Megan is an insanely talented rapper. The old man in the mv was really funny, but personally I think him respectfully ignoring the naked bodies is better than him ogling them (or at least much less creepy, lol) 4. I haven’t listened to this one yet. Maybe if I show it to my Spanish teacher she’ll play it instead of those bad Spanish covers of popular songs. I also agree it sounded very Dua Lipa esque; Latin Cold Heart! 3. I’ve heard this on the radio; I always like it when it came on, but I never knew what the song name was or the artist behind it. Def going in my playlist, such a vibe and a bop. Kinda reminds me of Arlo Parks sonically. 2. Haha I thought this one would be Happier Than Ever, so I began an anecdote on the symbolic first time I heard it- but yes, this song is amazing. So beautiful- opened for an amazing era. I’m not sure what commercial or critical successes HTE had, but everything I’ve heard from this album has been amazing. Also I heard a while ago (after this single) Billie was dating a thirty year old man, which was saddening. Obv she’s legally an adult, entitled to make her own choices, but I felt this relationship might be influenced by her returning to familiar habits of being with older, potentially toxic men (considering the guy was notorious for making racist online comments). Billie Stans, feel free to correct me if I got facts wrong. I’m jussa local after all. 1. This song is such a vibe and has such a great vibe- I adore it. I’ve heard a couple people say it’s terrible, which made my follower brain reconsider it, but this song is indefinitely one of my favs from this year. Hopefully we'll get to see the music industry revolutionized by all these new young faces we're seeing. Great video Todd, very thankful for your effort and passion.

I miss pop music being mostly loud and energetic. The last several years have just felt tepid. Even in the rock scene (what's left of it), most radio stuff not really something you can "rock out" to in the car. This isn't to say I'm against new music, it just feels like popular music right now leans more on being "chill" and "meaningful" at the expense of "fun" or "bombastic". Obviously there are exceptions to this trend; THOT Shit sounds like a lot of fun.

This is going to sound SO stupid and I'm prepared for that, but honestly, that's why I listen to so much K-pop. I feel the same way, and it reminds me of what I like about pop music in the first place--the fun, the catchy lyrics, and the excitement. It seems like so many charts are going through the "dismal and whiny" ringer. Thank god for K-pop and hoe anthems. 😂

@@averyrose2262 Actually good point! That might explain the (sudden?) rise of K-pop in the west. High-octane music you can absolutely vibe to while not having to think about a deeper meaning. Not really my thing, but more power to anyone that enjoys it.

It's funny, when you first started putting out these lists, you had pretty much the same music everywhere, we partied to David Guetta and Black eyed Peas both in the US and Europe. Nowadays there's actually good music in my native language, and the homegrown stuff is so popular that I haven’t heard of most of the songs on here. Now I come here more for an annual checkup on the music Over There and some tips for good music. I always end up picking up some of your best picks. Thanks for doing these.

"Brutal" sounds so 90's because it is the guitar riff from Elastica's 1995 song "Connection" I also think that is why so many 30 somethings liked it because their brains recognized it even if they didn't realize it.

Willow was someone I liked from the moment she appeared in the last episode of adventure time, not just because she was there but because she did a damn good job singing and it was clear to me that she was a real musician. Honestly when I checked the credits to see who did it, I thought it was some other artist called WILLOW, but nope.
