Mark’s worst pick does reek of Girl Defined, but if you consider that she met her “good one” on American Idol (when she was barely 18), and their wedding was officiated by a Duggar son-in-law, my mind would circle right back to the fundamentalism, too. (Granted, her husband’s buddy who married them isn’t the most outwardly repugnant of any of them, but it’s still worth mentioning).

I think it's based on personal factors. I mean Gabby Barrett is unlikable, but in comparison to I Hope, it's also bad, but it doesn't really give me much to say. Or at the very least, it's the sort of white bread mediocrity that's just toxic if you give it more thought. And even then, I was aware this crap would be a hit under the guise that people look up to this ideology. Or in other words, Aaron Lewis could of made this song if he wanted to play to the mainstream or whatever that means now. Yeah, Barrett doesn't deserve a career. Worse than LAROI and Hayes cause they are just embarrassments, this is gross.

this video coming out made me realize that i think i've been watching mark for four years now, which sounds crazy. i was a sophomore in high school when i found spectrum pulse; i used to listen to his videos while i painted my sophomore portfolio. i graduated this year and am currently waiting to hear back from an org who shortlisted me for a painting scholarship that would cover half of my tuition sophomore year. i can't believe how much everything has changed. through it all, though, mark has been a constant. billboard breakdown, on the pulse, and these year end lists have practically become a new means by which i measure time. his videos are kind of like music -- i can scroll through them and vaguely remember what painting i was working on then, or at the very least what was going on in my life when i listened to the music he discussed. i'm honored to have been a spectrum pulse fan for so long, and i want mark to know that i'm beyond grateful that i (unbeknownst to you ik) was able to have your videos with me on this crazy journey.

The Good Ones reeks of Girl Defined-esque bs but imo it's major failing comes in the chorus lyrics. The framing implies that a good relationship is something to be acquired instead of maintained, an assumption drawn from seeing love as acquiring one of the good ones instead of becoming good with someone. It's an almost childishly vapid sentiment which is all fun and nice until you get context on her relationship and suddenly this 'good one' she found starts looking a little more like a career liability.

I'm a year behind on this but I completely agree with your points made about Butter and Armys. I was pushed out of the fandom by people attacking me for thinking streaming is unnecessary. Because it god damn it. It artificially inflates numbers and actively makes it harder yo know what's truly a "hit" song as right now everyone has milions of views. Butter as a song is...meh. It has one catchy line at the beginning and I guess the only thing that saves it from being awful to me is the bits of personality they managed to put into it. ARMYs can be both the best of fandom and the worst of it. They would be better off is they actually listened to what BTS stands behind. They're a group with a anti bullying campain yet the fans find it necessary to bully people who don't have the same opinion as the collective

All these year end list make me realize that I have a VASTLY different interpretation of "Heat Waves" than most people, because I actually really like the lyrics. I was under the impression that the chorus is about missing someone long after you've broken up with them and regretting your decision to end the relationship, while the verses were flashbacks to the actual relationship, which was deeply dysfunctional and needed to end for the sake of both parties. Hence all the references to mirages - the distorted mirrors of hindsight and nostalgia have warped the narrator's memory of the relationship, making him long for a perfect version of it that never existed. Anyway, I'm probably overthinking this. It's not the best Glass Animals song by any means, but I still like it a lot and want to stand up for it. It really captures the experience of feeling lost and lonely as you lie awake on a hot summer night, reminiscing about the past.

This is a year late oop but I should say that most Armys, like myself, are genuinely understanding and won't jump down your throat if you don't like a BTS song. If you're respectful about your opinion and don't insult the boys or be xenophobic towards them, we don't mind. We say, "we disagree, but thank you for being respectful when most people arent". The ones you worry about are the minority, yet they still unfortunately have a loud presence. We don't condone their behavior, and do our best to stop it. You could say that about every artist's fans tho

TLDR: I would have put the entirety of Certified Lover Boy at the top of my worst list. Just the whole album. It's just the perfect encapsulation of soulless, flavorless corporate """""art,""""" in a year that felt rampant in its shameless product-ness. I actually got back into pop music and chart watching this year, after spending the past couple years listening to a lot of underground/experimental rap. I was actually considering throwing my hat into the ring of "worst list" videos, but just never got around to it. But if I was going to make a list, I would put every single song from Certified Lover Boy at the top spot. Seriously. Now, I know some might say "hey that's not fair, how can you put an entire album at the top of a list of the 10 worst songs of a year? Wouldnt you be putting like 20 songs in one spot, that would basically triple the amount of songs on your list." Okay. If it's not fair to put an entire album at the top spot of a worst list, then maybe we should stop trying to muscle the entire album into the top 10 on the charts. Maybe we should stop giving accolades and achievements and record breaking statuses to an "artist" who has been on autopilot for over half a decade. Maybe it isn't fair to keep calling Drake the biggest pop star of my lifetime, or anyones lifetime for that matter. In the video, during the Way 2 Sexy spot, Mark brought up the idea of "Low Quality Music" to describe the song. And, while I agree with that interpretation of the latest floods of Drake releases, the snappy buzz word phrase I would use is "product as product." Taking the idea of "art as product," (i.e. the commercialization of our art forms, boiling them down to just things that we consume under capitalist society) to its furthest extent. Say what you want about Fancy Like, but at least that shitty product placement excuse for a song had a flavor to it. It was the flavor of cheap microwave food with a healthy guzzling of motor oil, cheap styrofoam and horse piss, but that's at least something. There is no flavor on Certifed Lover Boy. At all. Not even the parts that everyone says are "interesting," like that one horrible line from Girls like Girls, which is probably the most memorable moment from the album. The album doesn't even strike me as music at this point. What it reminds me most of is, honestly, a mass produced table or chair or lamp. Functional, to an extent, but absolutely devoid of heart, soul, effort, meaning, and, often times, are only barely functioning. Theres no "there" there. And even on the scale of other "product as product" musical acts, like Imagine Dragons, I at least understand what they're trying to provide. I understand what commercials they're trying to write. Imagine Dragons is for Movie Trailers and Car commercials. The only commercials I see soundtracked by Certified Lover Boy, are commercials for Certified Lover Boy. Seriously. I cant think of a single commercial Way 2 Sexy, or Girls Like Girls, or Knife Talk, or any of the other songs off that HOUR AND A HALF album could work in that context. It's all just white noise. And it was somehow allowed to break records of most songs from an album debuting in the top 10 this year. And what really got me about the whole thing is that faint, distant memory of my childhood, when Drake tried. Tried to be new. Tried to be boundary pushing. Tried to be interesting. Tried to be anything. Anything more than vacuous white noise. I don't know. I have so many more thoughts on this album, and why I hate it and what it represents, for the pop charts, for Drake, for the music industry at large, for culture at large, everything. I could talk about the hype surrounding this album, how the feud with Kanye impacted it, how I feel about it in context to the rest of Drakes discography going, both back and forward. But at this point, I think I've spent longer on this than Drake took to even make the damn thing.
