You let me know in the comments, what type of toxic people have you encountered in tech?
@karieltheone
@karieltheone 2 жыл бұрын
That type of gatekeeping comes from a place of insecurity, their are just people that need to put others down to make themselves feel better. Many times these are the same type of people that get enraged when someone gets to the same point as they have with less work, like they feel personally attacked. This reminded me of an interview I had at Samsung, it was a panel interview with 5 engineers, this one guy came 45 minutes late to the interview and as soon as he got there he started asking general physics text book questions, mind you, at this point I had been doing engineering related work for 8 years, never been fired, perfect reviews, all my background was with large successful companies...and here is this 20 year old being disrespectful by asking me basic science questions, with a very aggressive tone. Then when I replied all his questions he went into a rant on why pure 'traditional' engineering degrees were better than engineering technology degrees, because his program had Calculus IV and Differential equations as mandatory subjects, and most engineering technology degrees only saw up to Calculus II. Completely moronic. Mind you, at this point I have over 10 years in my industry, I work in one of the largest companies in the world, doing electrical engineering related work, in a group that does research and development...I have yet to use calculus or differential equations once at work. People are just dumb.

Gatekeepers and toxic devs don't believe they are either... they think they are good people trying to teach less intelligent people basic concepts.

Yep, another trait of a junior dev is tech stack favoritism, I always laugh when I hear people saying Node and React is better than C# and Blazor. Seriously who cares... our job is to write code to solve a problem, you can write that code in Assembly for all I care

I been writing code professionally for 30+ years now. I've worked for several companies and as an independent consultant. There are always going to be those who think you are a genius and those who think you have no idea what you are doing. My advice, ignore them both because neither is right. LOL! Sometimes you are the smartest person in the room and sometimes you aren't but NEVER let anyone treat you like you and skills are not an asset.

Hey man, you completely nailed it. It is those kind of people, geek, who feel insecure because their coding skills can now done by anyone who dont really have a computer science degree, so they get bitter and angry about it. They will even write article about how to code properly or how they will reject anyone how doesnt have a computer science degree. What a waste of time. And now with CHATGPT in the picture, things about to get very interesting, i mean very very interesting

The ultimate gatekeeping I've been seeing lately are the entry level positions requiring 2-3 years of experience. Like how do you need experience to get experience 🤔

They call it "entry level" so they can pay you less, some of the salaries I've seen for junior software developers are at just above minimum wage. I've even seen senior software developer positions advertised for $45 000 a year. That's absolutely laughable especially when you consider how many technologies and languages they expect you to know for that kind of money.

The gate keeping is so crazy! The Ego is even crazier! I have been on the side interviewing devs that would be working with me and on the other side being an interviewee and its disappointing how some companies make it difficult to get in the door. Don't give up on yourself if you are struggling to get a job because when God says YES, these people can't tell you no.

Okay, but let’s be real. Software developers are usually people who don’t really know what they’re doing as they code all day. Software engineers, on the other hand, are usually people who code all day and don’t really know what they’re doing.

I used to have a couple friends, super smart and brilliant coders (I think, lol), but they were definitely the toxic “RTFM NOOB LOL” types. Which is what mainly dissuaded me from pursuing coding professionally. Now that im older and disconnected from them, I’m really interested in it again! Never let others prevent you from exploring your interests!

This is something that needed to be said. It's more than just bitterness, it's insecurity. It's been a thing for a very long time. Unfortunately, this is nothing new. I've been in IT for over 30 years, but not in coding (I've been working on that off and on for about 7 years, though). If you have the interest and the drive, as with anything else, just go for it. Fuck whoever else thinks different. In the end, those jokers don't realize that the next crop of people have to take the mantle or otherwise, when the vets fade away, the industry suffers and dies right along with them.

30 years ago, programmers wore a tie and people called them professionals because they were professionals, they were adults. Now its a bunch of hoodie wearing kids with a God complex. No wonder salaries in the software field are going down.

I think why gatekeeping happens is seeing a huge influx of competition. I know personally you have felt this including me that when there are 20k new batch of software engineers coming out of college, there is only so much that a company can hire. Roughly half of these degree holders don't even use their degree (some go under business, finance, real estate, start-ups, etc.) which makes me confused as to why they even when down the rabbit hole.

Gatekeeper in tech (Salesforce consulting specifically) caused a dude to bully me in a multi-paragraph letter telling me how worthless I am because I earned 11x highly-technical certifications in 7 months. I felt shocked 😳 but discovered that it’s common.

As much as I have interviewed, taken 2+ hours test, etc you realize how these interviewers don't know much more than you. If anything they are looking up the answer on stack overflow and pretending they came up with the solution on the top of the dome.

Yo, I like your attitude when it comes to "Get as many people in as possible", but I personally feel like junior(and maybe even mid-level) are getting severely clogged with applicants. I have trouble finding work as a qualified programmer, and I'm sure many of the people entering software are having the same struggles as me

College is so expensive, and it was a boy's club anyway. The internet has all the knowledge you need to be a competent engineer. The trick is getting the experience. And those who spent the money usually want to gatekeep to make themselves feel better about spending that money.
