In college 1994 I was lucky enough to catch her in a Cambridge coffee shop when she was still living in her van preparing to touring the country. I have a rare five song demo cd with songs like Race Car Driver and Flower on it. She was around our age and my friend group got to know her, going to see her every Sunday night for weeks and hanging out afterwards. At the end of her run the coffee shop was packed to the gills. Watching her rise was incredible. I mean, when she was seen with Sean Penn I remember thinking woah, she really impacted the social sphere. Thanks for this deep dive! What a blast from the past.

Nedra Carroll was a piece of w, even in the 1980s. I lived in Anchorage for years and took stained glass lessons at Vitrics Studio, run by Nedra and her partner, some guy. The lessons were in the basement and Media's kids would run around getting in the way. Needs used to sing while we were cutting glass. Not very well. Never and guy got in trouble with the federal government for fraud. They took money to provide computer training to people but no one learned anything.
