The short film Milk Teeth tells the tale of a supernatural being that lives under the sink that exchanges money for the pearly whites in people's mouths. We’re taught that a tooth has a lot of value in life. It can be a sign of wealth, status, and health. A smile can give you a lot of information about a person based on what society tells us to think. Nowadays, beauty standards, celebrity influence, and cosmetic procedures have given rise to a new trend of an unattainable Instagram filter face. This movie made me think about our reality - and I noticed influencers on TikTok are starting to get really expensive dental work that involves veneers and crowns. Surprisingly it doesn't always go smoothly just like in the movie #edvasian

A good dentist won't do veneers for a patient with bad enough teeth that they would have to get dentures that early to begin with. Most people who get veneers will have them (not the same set) for the rest of their life if they take care of their teeth well and their dentist is good. However, you absolutely shouldn't get them just because you feel pressure from others or society, especially if your natural teeth are healthy and not causing any pain or problems with your bite. Veneers are really expensive, and you do have to get them redone every 10-15 years because they suffer wear and tear just like regular teeth do.

When my adult teeth grew in, I had super long, high-up canines. I was the weird kid, so of course I loved my vampire fangs. @@majlordag1889 I worked in a cosmetic dental office for a few years; veneers don't pose a health risk any more than your regular teeth would as long as you take good care of them (floss and brush every day). If you get them done by a reputable, good dentist and your veneers are properly adjusted they're a pretty safe cosmetic procedure.

@espy8287
@espy8287 2 жыл бұрын
@@majlordag1889 All permanent veneers require the tooth underneath to be shaved down before putting them on. You can't put more material on top of regular teeth, it will feel bulky and uncomfortable in a person's mouth, causing them issues with eating and speaking. You should absolutely be cautious, and make sure you go to a reputable dentist who will properly evaluate you as a patient and tell you about any and all risks there might be. Not everyone's teeth are in good enough condition to get veneers, and if you have existing health complications it can make them riskier. But if you're a healthy candidate for veneers, get them done by a good cosmetic dentist, and take care of them well they shouldn't cause problems. That said, don't get veneers just because of pressure from other people to look better. They're expensive, and you have to get them redone every 10-15 years. If your natural teeth are perfectly healthy and don't cause any problems you should try to keep them as long as you can! You don't need to have perfect porcelain teeth to be healthy and confident.

As a dental technician I'm horrified by these "18th birthday present" pictures. The enamel got shaven down nearly to a level I'm used to see on patients who get dental crowns for medical reasons. Never seen that with veneers (but heard of some bad cases). But I guess it depends on the dentist you go to (in that case a bad one probably) and the country you're living in. Here, in Germany, going to the dentist is covered by health care and veneers are for aesthetics only. It's also very rare (and expensive) for dentures or ceramic teeth being made in a bleach white shade. Your normal tooth color is the go-to for a natural appearance. Most of the time (with ceramic teeth and veneers) we even use reference pictures of the patient's teeth for the most realistic results. In my opinion teeth don't need to be perfectly straight and in the lightest shade of white. They need to be healthy and in case of fake ones keep their function and need to fit the person who's wearing them.

I unfortunately was at several bad dentist when I was younger. I have one crooked tooth in my mouth which was difficult for my whole life, got surgery at age of 3 because this one tooth didn't want to come out and everything went bad. ONE tooth.... then at age of 12 I fell flat on my face and my straight tooth beside that crooked one broke... At the age of 19 I finally got a crown, ... and the dentist and the technician made my nice straight tooth crooked too.... I stood in front on the mirror and almost cried my eyes out. I've told them I didn't want that and they told me I can't have straight teeth on one side it would look stupid... they literally said my teeth are "Kraut und Rüben" on one side... ONE tooth. So, I got a yellowish crown which is slightly crooked now (telling me I had butterfly teeth which wasn't true... I still have photos showing that my tooth wasn't crooked...) . Before that I was at another dentist who almost ruined my other teeth so... I am extremely suspicious when I go to a dentist and I wished I would find one to make that ugly crown look good. I was already talking to another dentist and he didn't want to say anything bad and just said that he had seen worse crown... So, because of a technician who made my tooth look like that and a dentist telling me my teeth are "Kraut und Rüben", I never smile in front of others... And that is Germany too. I don't want to bleach my teeth at all, they are fine the way they are... even if I wanted, the already yellowish crown wouldn't change color and it would look even weirder...

as a dentist i have to correct you. i cannot speak for your case but alot of the time, the caries goes near the nerve, so a nerve opening is very likely. you have to remove all of the caries before you put on a filling. If that is the case, either you need to make a root canal or if the opening is very little, you put a medicine on it and then do the filling. the medicine will induce the dentine growth and the nerve will not be troubled. she might have done none of that which might explain your problems.

As someone who had to get veneers due to an accident that left my front teeth chipped (to the point of extreme sensitivity and pain), I do have to say that I find myself more comfortable smiling and talking in social situations. Veneers are expensive, they have to be replaced several times, and they can cause some tooth pain. Honestly, I would only recomend this surgery if you genuinly need it for your dental health (like me) or if you are truly ready to pay for nice looking veneers every fifteen or so years. I am thankful for my veneers as I have less tooth pain and more confidence, but my situation is a lot different from people who get it just for cosmetic reasons.

In some ways I feel like society is advancing backwards. Especially on the beauty aspect. I feel like we should have moved more in the direction of dismantling toxic beauty standards, but instead the standards are constantly being pushed further and further and non of them are actually good for us. Surgeries can be very dangerous, I mean there's always a risk involved and for what? To fit in with what's currently seen as the beauty standard.. I do think that plastic surgery is very problematic and normalizing it is only gonna make it more prevalent in society. I feel like we need something to kind of push the breaks on this one, at least to slow it down and be assessed more critically.. That's nothing easy to do though since the plastic surgery industry profits from the narrative that It's empowering among others alike :( (Not saying that it's weird to get the urge to go under the knife, I myself have wanted and still sometimes want to change some things, but I try to stop myself and think about how I would be a part of normalizing it further.) 😖😳

I still wear my retainers every night 15 years later. I even went and got several extra pairs made by my ortho in case something were to happen to my one set and he's getting old and has probably retired and I trusted him and the awesome work he did(he was able to move my teeth to better positions so much so that I didn't end up needing jaw surgery that initially they thought I would need). I have Sjogren’s resulting in an extremely dry mouth. Which results in absolutely horrific teeth issues. I don’t even like watching videos about this topic (why am I here, lol, it’s the only Edvasian video I’m not watching, just commenting). When a person has EXTENSIVE dental issues, no level of dental insurance makes fixing them affordable. As an example, I have two dental sessions scheduled, one January 24th and the next two weeks later. Those two appointments max out my insurance even with me paying $2500 out of pocket (it involves crowns and bridges and includes my top front seven teeth). It’s none of my business what people do with their teeth. But it’s distressing and saddening to see people destroy perfectly healthy teeth when I can’t afford to keep mine in my face. If I had that kind of money my teeth wouldn’t be the first and last thing I think about every day of my life.

Its not perfect and doesn’t fit my other front bottom teeth I may still end up with a crown, but only with some cases of enamel deficiency it is recommended to get crowns done, your teeth without the enamel can degrade incredibly quickly. So proper management is needed and keeping your teeth intact is very important.

You blurred the heck out of that movie, and thank you for that, because even though my father is an oncologist and cancer patient's faces with whole chunks taken out were most of the things I saw on his pc, I'm so triggered by these scenes. Though, this child is like, what, eight? Most of his extracted teeth weren't permanent, but, oh my god, is that SO unnerving. Ugh.

Can I just say, this formula for videos is so good!! An interesting topic with a relevant movie review then going into real life examples. It's fun and interesting and just borders the edge between "oh god that's awful" and internet entertainment

no with the teeth shaving, my parents are both dentists and absolutely hate it. Bc they're not getting veneers they're getting crowns and by the time they're 30 they are basically going to need dentures because crowns don't last a lifetime and are extremely expensive so all these teeth eventually have to be pulled.

A girl got mad at me for reposting a shared post about HER family member and immediately CAME FOR MY TEETH saying “ARENT YOU ON METH GO FIX YOUR TEETH” like NO I JUST GREW UP IN AN UNFORTUNATE SITUATION WHERE MY TEETH WERENT A PRIORITY TO MY PARENT/FINANCIALLY. 🙄 Not everyone has the means to afford a beautiful smile. It hurt my feelings a little but I made myself get in the mirror and smile and honestly it made me grateful for the smile I DO have, some people have it worse and one day I will fix my teeth but I’m going to STILL SMILE, because smiling can make someone’s DAY!

Have told my girls for years when they were growing up that the teeth and smiles they see aren’t reality. That teeth are imperfect , discolored, crooked sometimes . One of twins has the cutest narrow gap between her front 2 teeth. She is 19 now and I think she finally has embraced it as much as a girl at 19 can

My teeth are like Millie's before she had work done. Even the dentists have told me to put braces on even though my teeth don't cause me any problems, just for aesthetical reasons. Eventually I came to accept my teeth as they are and not be ashamed of my smile, though it was forced acceptance because I could only afford basic procedures such as cavities treatment. I still get told to get braces but it's just not a priority to me.

As someone who was traumatized by too much dentistry since I was blessed with terrible teeth genes, I want to know why? Why would you set yourself up for a lifelong relationship with the dentist for "pretty" teeth? I was born with a crazy mouth of teeth and I guess the dentist and ortho didn't know exactly what to do with me so its not entirely their fault but yeah, unless my teeth hurt or cause me serious problems, never getting "cosmetic" stuff done again.

I didn’t get it right away, but I loved how you used the theme/warning of the movie. That and how honest you were about the escalating pressure to look a certain way this video a lot deeper than the standard ‘look at these shallow idiots ruining their teeth’.

I had braces when I was a kid because my baby teeth got replaced all crooked, which is fine, treatment lasted 2 years. I'm 22 now and they've gotten back to being slightly crooked again, but my dentist said it's natural and wouldn't affect my bite at all. Point is: crooked/non 100% white teeth doesn't always mean you're not healthy

My dentist convinced my parents and I that I needed braces and now my gums are messed up, which is apparently common with braces. I wish I had known that before I got them. My teeth were a bit crooked but not that bad and definitely not worth the gum surgeries I need and will continue to need.

When my great grandma turned 20 they pulled all her teeth and she used dentures ever since. And I still think that makes more sense than paying big bucks to damage your teeth and get crowns just because it looks good.

I have veneers, I had to have them on my two front teeth at young age, it's no fun process. it's painful, stressful, expensive and time consuming. if you're wondering why I had to have them at young age it was because when my first set of teeth fell( like every other kids did, even my twin sister) and the new ones grew they weren't white and flat, they were yellow and had very uneven surface, kinda looked like a wood worm has eaten mt teeth( and I knew kids made fun of me and parents used me as example for their kids for brushing their teeth). the reason behind this kind of problem is not known exactly, there are a few reasons but first one is when the teeth are being created and growing inside gums they get hit and that damages the process and teeth grow badly, second reason can be genetics. I remember our school principle slapped me on the mouth once, and I was younger than other kids by a year so my teeth were still growing, I guess that caused it. oh btw im from iran and we don't have tooth fairy.

Having had bad and weak teeth my whole life no matter what I do, it makes me sick people will just choose voluntarily to ruin their teeth😫 like I've always liked the shape of my teeth and they are kept super clean and they're naturally quite straight but I have had so many fillings, root canals, crowns and pullings just to not be in pain, I would trade anything to not have a painful and uncomfortable mouth🥲 not to mention the cost💸 probably will have atleast partial dentures in the next 10 years...
