Kessler has always been such a strange but iconic staple of InFamous 1. It’s kinda crazy he isn’t talked about more in the gaming landscape.

I really liked Kessler as a villain, he is a tragic yet selfish character. He is a man who refused to take action in his own time and when it destroyed his life he decided to go back and fix his mistake. The big issue with him is that instead of finding a way to give Cole his powers without destroying a city and training him and working together to face the beast he decided that Cole needed to be like him, Cole needed to know the pain of lose and despair so that he would be strong enough mentally to face the Beast, to force him to grow up and take action. Kessler had so many more options, he could have raised a whole group of conduits to face the beast together but instead he believed only he could defeat the Beast, only his past self would have the strength to do so. I think Kessler wanted cole to be the one to face the beast because maybe it would somehow undo the sins of kesslers pass, maybe redeem his failure in some way, a selfish desire that only caused needless suffering to both himself and the world

To expand on that thought; Kessler knew cole so well he knew that the only way for cole to accept responsibility was through the exact same means Kessler accepted responsibility. He was so insular in his logic that he didn’t even consider that people like Alden might be useful, instead he developed a messiah complex after spending his life running. The fact that cole was still able to feel in the second game is super skipped over, I feel like fighting your alternate future might fuck with your head a lot.😂

I love how that sentence works in multiple ways, or rather, it’s able to be used to describe how said location has already been the place where Cole’s world was forever changed, just a different Cole. Of course, only a person who’s completed the game will know this. This game’s awesome twist blew my mind as a kid, I had no way to expect it, it’s amazing writing.

Kessler seems like a prime example of what an Anti Villain is. Like Thanos in the MCU. Having overall good intentions, but means that are awful if not worse than if they didn't act at all. The saying goes "the ends don't always justify the means" is a great way to describe Kessler. A man wanting to save the world, but in doing so caused harm to thousands of lives.

when will enough of Modern Humans realise that the whole narrative of 'Hero' & 'Villain' (and the other Etymological terms) is just some twisted Modern Ideological Dogma of categorising 'Hero' and 'Villain' based on a preconceived notion of differentiating based on a social accepted standard of what to perceive and deem a 'Hero' and a 'Villain'... they're both allegorical terms that by nature are paradoxical for and against Humans in general within Real life and in fiction.

While I do agree with the sentiment. Not everything is so black and white. It's all a bunch of gray. The human spirit is second to none on this Earth. Our moral compasses, our perceptions of life, our very way of life is in of itself natural. We are made by nature but what we make or believe is also by definition OUR nature. A wolf creates a den, a bird creates a nest, an Elephant has excellent memory, even amidst what is considered "Nature" animals and other creatures create things of their own design. It's not as advanced as we are, but they still created their own things, their own lives. Everything we see is at it's core by nature. Be it human nature or otherwise. We evolved rapidly, that's merely it.
@godzillazfriction

@@ravensailiata3235 i mean 'morality' isn't exactly a stage of evolution that serves as the 'way of life' that you were pointing out about, it merely serves to juxtapose against Humanity and simplify but convolute it for a means to give out 'meaning' - which doesn't exactly serve the natural stage of life as Humans based upon on how Humans have been since the dawn of mankind. its either the Modern Era of Humans accept the way as it is, then just go on from there even if Human Nature will get in its way, and don't further 'radicalize' - then rationalise a subset of an idea to give 'meaning'... or Humanity can strive to convolute itself much more in the future.

@@godzillazfriction My point being, not everything nature or living thing's do is for the sake of survival or makes any sense or serves a specific purpose. Only look at Dolphins or Killer whales. They have a habit of torturing smaller creatures for the sake of it. Canines even in the wild are playful and intriguing. Species that I never thought had any connections actually work together to survive and actively participate in one another's raising of young, not because they had to, but because they can. Hornets and any hornets connected to them will actively remember and torment someone just because they existed. Not everything has a sense or purpose. It doesn't need to. Survival is not everything there is to life. Not everything needs to be complicated yes, but sometimes things being too simple isn't exactly living. Other species may not be as complex as we are, but it doesn't change the notion not everything is a necessity. The human mind is the most complicated thing on this planet, it is crazy to comprehend our progress in the past 2,000 years, hell, even the past 100. The wright brother's taking flight and neil armstrong landing on the moon are events merely 66 years apart. There are people out there that could have easily lived to see both. Was it necessary? Was it required for our survival? No, we did it because we could. That's what makes the gift of life amazing, we can do grand things if we want to, but we don't have to. Our complexity and our desire to try things just because we can is what makes life such an amazing thing. I'm not saying it's perfect. I'm not saying that the fact we have WMDs is what makes life great. Morality is the same thing. It's unnecessary, but that's what makes life itself more than just survival. It's living.

It's not that infamous 1 is bad. It's that Infamous 2 took that foundation and made it 10x better. Gameplay wise. Story wise, both are great, but 2 really added a buncha fun stuff to the combat that make it feel way funner, but none of that would have been possible had this game not set such a great foundation.

Also note that Kessler always kept Zeke somewhat safe, because Cole and Zeke might be selfish to a certain extent, Cole wouldnt have any moral point or anyone to rely on if it wasnt for Zeke. Even when pushing him away, he doesnt kill him Since the good ending in canon, I think Kessler knew that if the time came, Zeke would push Cole to do/be better, considering that Zeke starts fixing his mistakes nearly immediately which is a trait that Kessler wants, and Cole ignores that if Zeke stayed with Alden, he wouldve died, but Zeke doesnt blame Cole at any point for lashing out on him and admits his mistake, even though it mightve lead to his own death. Kessler was smart as he knew who needed to be filtered from Cole's life to keep him straight and focused on his goal

I always liked the pairing with kessler and evil cole for both games. Kessler wanted cole strong and ready. Evil offers you more power and easier gameplay in infamous 1. To me its making cole choose not out of good of evil but out of which option will save the world. Or simply put, doing whatever it takes by any means necessary. In infamous 2 after cole learns the truth and in the tie in comic You learn coles hatred for kessler and what hes done. low and behold kesslers attempt to sacrifice cole with the rfi failed. Cole finds his own path to forge instead of being forged for him. Cole becomes the beast, out of spite for kessler, fear from dying and finding a better way to save the world. Kessler created his own monster, and made a self fulfilling prophecy. It’s tragic and dark, and that may appear bad. But i think it works perfectly for a story like infamous.

The way I see it, Kessler's motivations are entirely selfish, his actions are driven by a twisted sense of self-righteousness. No matter what Cole does, Kessler interprets that to feed his confirmation bias. He knows he's a failure, and will do anything to prove that he's not. That there exists a timeline where he's not. He has to prove to himself that he's the one who can stop The Beast, and "saving the world" is just a weak excuse.
@carolusrex5213
@carolusrex5213 3 ай бұрын
I agree, but I also thing Kessler is a tragic figure as well. Yeah he ran instead of fighting the beast but as far as we could tell he never fought an enemy like that in his timeline he probably just lived a normal life. It was the deaths of his wife and children that drove him to action and he realized that he coupes have stopped the carnage sooner he decided to go back and force his younger self into that villain role. I doubt he killed Trish because he wanted to he simply believed he needed to, in order to force this other version of himself to grow up, to strength his will.

Still remember the day I beat Kessler. The plot twist was INSANELY good for me. I played the game again (to do the evil route) and every dialogue, every scene, every tiny detail was very well crafted and plan out. The foreshadowing was insane. I miss villains like Kessler and I really want Infamous to return in some way. I don't nessasary mean infamous 3 the return of Cole or something like that but a spin off or a cameo like a Playstation all stars 2 maybe? Something. I just love these games. They need/dereve more love!!!!

It's worth pointing out that, based on Kessler's own memories, he did legitimately believe that he could have won if he fought the Beast the first time. With this, and with him fighting Cole as the final test to make sure Cole was ready, you could argue that even now, altering time to set up Cole, he was still running from the responsibility of fighting the Beast directly by shoving it onto another version of himself.
@solorhypercane5041

I believe Kessler knew the very year the beast would appear. The infamous 2 guidebook implies that Kessler gave the year to everyone he told about the beast. Which would explain everyone’s shocked reaction to the beast showing up. It would also be in everyone’s best interest for Kessler to warn them years in advance to give them time to prepare That being said i think you’re absolutely right saying Kessler chose to punish Cole as I had always believed that myself. It also fits exactly in inFamous’s black and white morality system as being the most grey method of stopping the beast. Kessler is cole if neutral karma existed in the game and Kessler’s plan is both selfish and selfless at the same time i can’t think of a more neutral response.

The characters in Second Son are also weaker than what we got in the first 2 games: Cole is more interesting than Delsin, and Augustine is not as compelling as Kessler, The Beast, or Bertrand. The morality system in Second Son was also worse than the previous titles. Whether Delsin is good or evil, his brother has the exact same thing to say to him before he dies, and this makes no sense since Delsin's brother is upset with him if he chooses to be evil. You explained the parallels and differences with Cole quite well. Side note, but what's your opinion on the identity of The Beast in the original timeline? Infamous 2 has John in the role and gives us context. However, the nature of time travel stories more often than not has characters who utilize that power changing things massively. There's no guarantee that The Beast was the same person with the same reason from Kessler's timeline. But I digress. Thanks for the video.

It’s interesting to think about how Kessler saw himself as better than Cole, or his past self, because he was responsible. He didn’t run from his problems and took responsibility and made the hard choices. But in a way, he did. He ran from his failed timeline, he made the most complicated plan he could just so he could pass on the responsibility of saving the world onto his younger self. I’d like to think that despite claiming he was more responsible than his younger self and was facing the problem he failed to before in a way he hasn’t changed and is still running from the beast. Either way, he still creates a version of himself who is better than him in every way.

@ashtonmcpherson1730 I think it goes back to the idea that he either wasn’t fully aware of how the beast was created or that he wanted any excuse to abuse his younger self so he created the conditions to allow him to do that.

I think the timeline splits when Kessler destroyed the ray sphere sending John to his fate. He unintentionally created the beast and tried to run from it and the disease that ran thru the city, but it was inevitable in a sense the only timeline where he could win came about in the second game thanks to him changing the outcome and setting a new path for himself. As much as Kessler knew he also didn’t know how his life would be turn out if he had done things differently so he dabbled in tampering it not realising that it would all end up how feared the beast was created because of him. I however am not sure of Kesslers whole story and at what point the beast created, was it the same scenario Cole was in when he destroyed the ray sphere that killed John. Or was it Moya that was testing it out with John. Did a version Kessler exist in that timeline as he did in Coles. Unless we get a new story of Kessler and how the ray sphere was made in that timeline I can only assume it was him all along some sort of paradox

The reveal of who Kessler truly is, is on par with the reveal of who revan is from KOTOR, in my opinion.

Does Kessler ever actually say he got his powers from the Ray Sphere? Because if we accept the assertion of Second Son that Conduits don't NEED a Ray Sphere to activate then it's possible Kessler's powers developed on their own and he only used the Ray Sphere to enhance his power. Which actually neatly clears up that little continuity snarl with the very premise of Second Son.

9:24 i believe kessler did not receive his powers the same way Cole did (ray sphere explosion) since Kessler was worried Cole would die from the explosion

Personally I think that Kessler/Future Cole's powers came from a Ray Sphere blast though in His original timeline He was simply caught in the blast He wasn't the one who activated the Ray Sphere
