Salt Lake City's Train Shoppe is not your average hobby shop. This high tech train store has computerized model railroads in all sizes and an interactive riding train with light pistols that activate sound effects and animations. Oh, and they sell model trains too. Total fun for kids or anyone else who loves screwing around with trains.

I'll have to check it out. When I was a kid, we'd make trips down from Cache Valley to go to Douglas Models and Keith's Hobby House. This one looks like fun, especially since my old N scale equipment is back out of its boxes and I have a small layout again.

My friend you are a very lucky man to still have a (“hobby shop/train shop”) in your Salt Lake City ! When I came to the city of Houston to settle down when I was 15, there were more hobby shops that I could count on my hands and toes ! Unfortunately and with That being said ; sure we are in the year 2019 but, there is one surviving hobby shop by the name of (“Papa Ben’s train’s”) in Houston !!! Even the big (“HobbyTown USA”), that was opened here not too long ago, went bankrupt or ended it here and shut it off and the store moved back to San Antonio where their main headquarters is at ! I remember when I was a kid barely 13 and riding my bike through the most dangerous parts traffic wise of Miami just to go all the way to orange blossom hobby shops the last time I was there was back in 1992 trying to open up relations for wholesaling is right when Andrew hit 92 they also went bankrupt ! It’s sad with all these really nice mom-and-pop hobby shops went belly up ! Thanks hit me hard because I used to work for (“Jean’s model shop”), in Houston, Texas in the Sharpstown center mall ! But the only really good thing I did was when I was working for her, I was buying two of the same item one to build, one to throw in the closet!!! But it got to the point where my mom would have throw me out ! She told me either rent you a 10 x 10 space and store your stuff or I’m kicking you out today !!! And so I rented a space and we went from a 10 X 10 Storage space ! Unfortunately it’s still growing !!! 🌊🐺

1. Model railroading is fun! 2. It's cool that trains now have sound, but I can only take the sound for about 5 minutes, then it's just NOISE that needs to be shut off! 3. It's great to get kids involved in the hobby, but they will definitely need intense computer skills to program and run their trains. 4. It's a great idea to have more than just trains to buy at the hobby shop to bring in customers. 5. The hobby shops near me went out of business years ago due to declining sales and rising overhead.

Many shops have died because of the internet and online sales. But the crash of 2008 really hurt hobby shops. Many people gave up hobbies when they lost a job or even their house. And never came back. And others left out of fear of losing their income. Hobbies are making a comeback but when times are hard hobbies are the first to go.

What really really really sucks is that the code enforcement guy passed this place many times Retired and the new guy came in pitched a fit and ordered the whole place closed down. Saying it was not up to code. The retail store is still open and they’re still able to do parties but they’ve had to take out the train rides. Needless to say we are all disgusted. He’s talked to Salt Lake City just a few blocks further up the street, and they’re more than happy to give him a permit if he wants to put it right back together the way it used to be. In a new building in Salt Lake City. What a bunch of nonsense.

Ok this sucks. The NMRA National Convention opens tomorrow in Salt Lake City and the 1400 or so people are invited to come out and ride and perhaps buy a train! So yesterday the fire department came by and red tagged the back area!!! They have inspected it dozens of times and never even a small problem. But when tens of thousands is riding on it suddenly they think its dangerous. Some people and their egos.

What a great idea for a train store... or for a model display centre that also sells train stuff. LOL That ride-on train with the guns... better than laser tag! Hubby and I really want to start into trains but we literally have zero space in the house we're currently in. Even every shelf is loaded with stuff we need. We're actually "old folks" (hubby's in his 70s and I'm not far behind) but have never been able, for various reasons, to do trains. I think I might start with something in the diorama setting just to get going. Anyway, thanks for showing this shop. If we ever get down to Salt Lake City again, we will probably be going specifically for this and the train show. :)
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 5 жыл бұрын
Do a diorama!! You can do a working layout on a 8 x 1 foot shelf. Run a train back on forth. Planning a show on that.
@2CraftySeniors
@2CraftySeniors 5 жыл бұрын
@@ToyManTelevision I'll be watching for that show. Thanks for the encouragement. I need to start with a diorama for sure. Eventually I want to build a big dollhouse room by room starting with the living room... but I don't like small rooms in a real house and I really don't want them in my little house. So I'd want the living room to be 18"x24". I said it would be a big dollhouse. ;) I figure that way I can put an N scale train into the house somewhere and it would be the right scale for the dollhouse. Since we'll be moving in the next six months to a year the big dollhouse will have to wait until we get to where we're going. Then I'll have more space to work on it and display it. For now though, a smaller diorama will get me started.
@ToyManTelevision
@ToyManTelevision 5 жыл бұрын
FUN!! Yes, n works out to 1:13 scale in dollhouse 1/12 scale. So an N scale building is almost exact for a dollhouse in a dollhouse. That makes the train a bit big, Z scale works out to almost G scale in a dollhouse. They make an O scale model railroad for dollhouse!! A little 4x8 oval with a train so small you can just barley see it. Runs on air! Sort of blows the train around. BUT if you want a G scale train in a dollhouse, Z is close. And while N is big, it looks OK too.

Really sad. Or just upsetting. The city made them tear out the rides. For a month or so they couldn’t even have parties. The new inspector disagreed with the old inspection for the building permit. From years ago. So the idiot pitched a fit in the middle of a birthday party and threw everyone out. Said it was a life threatening hazard. Because it’s dark and some crap. So after fighting for a month Jeff gave up. In exchange for using the arcade and party rooms he had to take out the train ride and a new mine car ride. As soon as his lease is up he’s moving a few blocks from south Salt Lake City to Salt Lake City. Where he can redo the whole thing without the jackass inspector. .

Heard you mention DCC as a "new thing" and had to do a double take in the upload date. As for getting young kids involved...I grew up with model trains through the 2000s and 2010s and was even a part of a youth model railroad club called Youth In Model Railroading and it gave younger kids a chance to not only meet other kids with the same interests but actually create a modular layout and go to some of the shows including the Amherst Belt Lines show in Springfield MA. To be honest I don't think there really was any other group like it and unfortunately through the years the member count started to decline. I aged out a little over two years ago and with COVID I'm honestly not sure of the status of YMR. Hopefully others can create similar groups (maybe with better track quality haha) and give younger kids a place to get into the hobby.

Hi. Sadly the city has ordered them to remove the two rides. The fire marshal had done all the inspections for years but a new guy came in and ordered the place closed! After negotiations the city said they could keep it as is as long as they removed the train ride and the mine ride (not shown in this video). At first they said not enough exits then they said exits are ok but you need a better way to get the people on the rides out. But once the new guy made a fuss there was no fixing it. So Jeff is going to move a few blocks from South Salt Lake to Salt Lake where the fire inspector says no problem. As soon as the lease is up in a year. What BS. South Salt Lake is a mess. Half the shops closed. Is it any wonder?
