@@PiercingSight That would be a good suggestion for engine developers. To have them estimate the "sharpness" of position. By looking at how many good moves are available, and how severe are the alternatives. In worst case, there is only a single good move, and all others loose on the spot.

I am 1850 on lichess and the Stafford is my main response to 1. e4. However, many people are afraid of playing 3. nxe5 and we often transpose into a four knights. I very often win with the stafford, usually in under 20 moves. Yes, its objectivly bad, but if you win over the board, then there is nothing to say.

At 7:32 you say that after 11 Kg2, the only winning move for black is 11 ... Bxf2. However, unless I am missing something, playing rook to h3 before taking with the bishop is even more crushing. Because: 11 Kg2 Rh3 12 Bxg4 Bxf2 if the white bishop takes the rook, then white gets mated with the following: 13 Bxh3 Qxg3+ 14 Kh1 Qxh3++ Or if instead white tries to defend using the queen with something like Qf3 then white will lose the queen with the following fork: 13 Qf3 Rxg3+ if the white queen takes the rook then the black queen takes white queen with check 14 Qxg3 Qxg3+ or if the king moves out of check, then the rook takes the white queen. If the white bishop takes the rook, then the black queen can move in with ... Qg3. This defends the black bishop, attacks the white bishop and the white king has nowhere to go.

What if after dxc6, d3 Bc5 and then Be2??? In this variation the Qd4 can be met with Be3

Just got one of the Stafford traps from the vid one of the first times I try the opening. 5.d3 Bc5, 6. Bg5 Nxe4, 7. Bxd8 Bxf2+, 8. Ke2 Bg4# reminds me of the Légals mate of the philidor defence that I get quite often so feels natural to play. Thank you master Eric for all the great content! 🙂

What about d4 on move 5, with the intent of taking away the c5 square from the bishop?
@zanti4132
@zanti4132 4 жыл бұрын
5. d4 just allows Black to get his pawn back with 5...Nxe4. However, 5. e5 Ne4 6. d4 looks quite good. White has a space advantage, an extra pawn, and two center pawns vs his opponent's zero center pawns. From here I'd hold off castling - castling too early seems to be the issue with most of the quick attacks coming out of this opening - instead focusing on getting my minor pieces out, and finding good squares for them won't be a problem at all. Really, getting a significant advantage should be easy. Even better will be how demoralized your opponent gets when he realizes he has no counterplay, instead of the quick mating attack he thought he'd get.

Also I have seen a significant increase in Stafford gambit players in the past few days on Lichess... I think your videos are doing damage already. Thankfully you also showed the very stable plan for white: ... d3 Be2 h3 Nd2 c3 d4... I had some quick wins with this line without really thinking

Hi Eric. Its a really interesting line. What if white responds to BC5 with BE3? Trade impacts pawn structure on kingside but it seems to shut down the gambit.

8:43 Queen checks but instead of Kd4, white should play Bf3 which I believe defends. White is 2 pieces up and can afford to give back a piece to defend its king. All the other lines look pretty good though. 😊
