Something to consider when placing your terrace houses, if you're looking at a realism perspective. Terraces in the UK were usually built to house factory workers often by the nearby industry, this would be within walking distance or railway commuting distance. As a result, the spare space in your shopping / business districts I think should be a mix of old mill buildings converted into apartments (similar to the town centre) as well as maybe some modern medium rise apartments to help make that old to modern transition. The shopping and business location would also tie in as this would most likely have been previously inhabited by said industrial buildings and in time gone by have been demolished offering that lovely flat vacant land that business love to swoop up on. All the best, James.
@Clavichordist2 жыл бұрын
Very much like my area across the pond. Waltham. Lowell, and Lawrence for example have row houses built for the workers back then but are now sought-after apartments today. The old mills today no longer manufacture much of anything and have become university branches, condos, apartments and small shops. While I would welcome the big manufacturing centers back, I'm glad too at the same time to see the mills being used rather than torn down which occurred before it was realized their historical worth.

@@Clavichordist You really want big manufacturing back in cities near neighbourhoods?
@gorgonzola862 жыл бұрын
It is similiar here in Germany. My sister just bought one that was once built for mining workers. The winding tower still stands just across the street, the old turbine buildings are a hotel now and another building houses a wine shop.
@Clavichordist2 жыл бұрын
@@heygek2769 Heck yeah. My city was decimated in the 1960s and 1970s. By 1974, the last shoe factory closed, laying off 250 workers. That's 250 workers out of the 25,000 or more that worked 3-shifts and made the city what it became and is no longer. The workers had decent homes and apartments with some better than others, but they weren't bad places to live. The management had bigger homes with bigger yards and gardens, and the mill owners had big mansions. The downtown is now empty with only a few shops left. The rest of the buildings are empty except for more banks than brains and a lot of overflowing bar rooms. This downtown had numerous regular shops and stores including a decent shoe store, an appliance and goods store, a music store that sold sheet music and instruments and also had teachers too. There was a bunch of small restaurants that boomed like crazy during the workweek as workers, who worked nearby, would go there to eat, and the shops too did a lot of lunchtime business. Then, once the mills closed, most of the downtown emptied out and now we have junk left. In addition to the emptying downtown, crime skyrocketed as people became unemployed. A number of the stores have been knocked down, mostly due to urban renewal along with the city hall, train station, and many, many buildings. The mills too succumbed except for a small handful compared to the old days. Many of them burned due to "white lightning" (aka insurance jobs) or were knocked down for parking lots even though no one shopped there. What are left are now expensive condos and loft apartments that no one except the NIMBYs and uber rich can afford. Speaking of NIMBYs. They moved in next to the railroad tracks, tracks that are used for both freight and passengers and have done so since 1841 and complain about the trains. The trains they say smell and make noise. None take the train to their jobs and instead drive Mercedes sedans, BMWs, Porches, and Audis. Oh, and lots of Range Rovers too. This same crowd also wouldn't associate themselves with whatever business is left in the town and shop elsewhere, leaving the fewer and fewer businesses struggling. This scenario has played out in Lawrence as well. Founded in 1845, Lawrence is one of the oldest planned mill cities in New England. Unlike my city, Haverhill, Lawrence made textiles and was once home to the largest worsting mill in the world. Today, all the mills are empty with the last one closing in the 1960s. What is left of the empty mills has become an arsonist's dream, a bunch of condos, and lots of empty space with a mere handful being repurposed as professional offices. The downtown is a crap hole with high crime and the city is overall a dangerous place. Lowell is a little better with the university, University of Massachusetts, Lowell there. With its four campuses, some taking up space in the old mills, this has helped the city recover substantially, but like Lawrence and Haverhill, there are no working mills any longer, maybe one or two if I'm mistaken. This city once hired 75,000 people making various goods but mostly textiles. So, do I want to see active mills again with houses nearby. Definitely.

Those terrace assets are wonderful - love what you did with them, but I can't help think there'd be more access on foot, especially to the back gardens. Too late for this section without major remodelling, but perhaps for the next tranche you build, leave enough room for a path down the back between the gardens for people to put their bins out, and every 6-10 houses (end-of-terrace) a path connection to the road.
