The way you eat, how much you exercise, how you manage stress and your exposure to environmental toxins all contribute to things like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and of course, heart disease.

Two awesome drs in one vid, thanks. I am 60 years, zero family of heart disease, exercised regularly, and no risk factors for heart disease. At 56, needed bypass surgery. ALL MY LIFE I ATE LOW FAT HIGH CARB DIET IN AN EFFORT TO BE HEALTHY. Carbs are a BIG problem, NOT fats. Thank you both. Btw, I was on statin, felt like crap. Put them in the garbage. Three years ago started eating high healthy fats and low carb. AWESOME!!!!!

Manny Radzky The reason your low-fat diet caused heart disease is because you were certainly replacing that with processed carbs and sugars. This leads to weight gain which causes heart disease. If you had switched from eating animal products and refined carbs to eating whole foods plant-based diet, You would be the best off. It’s not adding oils or fat that counts, It is getting rid of excess weight.

Dr. Mark Hyman, WOW WOW WOW!!!! BRAVO!!! I am so excited, so delighted, so hopeful watching you and your conversation with Dr. Aseem Malhotra. My husband of 39yrs is a veterinarian of over 40 yrs., we both are very interested in the information we have fairly recently started finding about ketogenisis (keto adaptation: burning fat vs glucose...)- it's implications blew our minds and led us to other questions in health. Thus the introduction that FAT may not be harmful, but - GASP - healthful? We were flabbergasted, then as each further investigation came about, such as watching you interview Dr. David Ludwig (his book "Always Hungry?")... another jaw dropping bomb of knowledge from you... Now watching you and this discussion with Dr. Malhotra, I am absolutely FLOORED. We look at our ages, husband 66yrs and I am just turning 60, he is tall & slim and healthy, I am short, heavy and type 2 diabetic with other problems. We want to KNOW what to do for ourselves NOW. We already have changed our lives and "eating" to reflect many things you have brought up (lowering sugar/carb consumption, eating nuts and much more), but are still in semi shock that we are hearing that "calories in/calories out" is NOT making us healthy, not at all! I am sending yet another link to my husband to watch this interview/video TO THE VERY END, because it will answer and reiterate what we are learning about what we can do/change to truly make us more healthy and now, not in a year... Also, the incredible shock, with the realization of the points you brought up with this doctor in England, the scope of the information I just heard... OMG. There is no way to describe to you the delight yet a brewing anger and frustration, of feeling cheated all these years, being told so many useless erroneous must do's by physicians who were/are so authoritative... yet so ignorantly led me in the opposite (and unhealthy) direction. I am going to find a way to get our excellent physician to see a few key videos of yours, to introduce to her the ideas put forth in them. We need to start a conversation with her on these new (? maybe not so new but new to many physicians) findings about health, the metabolic syndrome, and what she can do to help with it all. Surely it will help her and her practice as well as all her patients with her investigations! I apologize for going on so long in my comment. My husband has called me his "commie-pinko-spy" since our first year together, because I have refused to accept the status quo and just "go along" with whatever is shoved in my direction, even constantly challenging him. It has taken him many years to appreciate this dogged trait in me. Perhaps you have the same trait! Will keep investigating, this was absolutely SUPERB! Thank you so much.

@HelmetBlissta -- Such rubbish. Wary of dietary advice taken from nations that have private health care?!! Did you not listen to this conversation about all the bad dietary advice and that Britain is the fattest nation in the EU? Dr. Malhotra is from Britain. Now to the U.S. Do you have any idea about the spending on PUBLIC health in the U.S.? Over $3.5 trillion PER YEAR. Furthermore, in both these countries drugs are mostly not covered by public healthcare. It is the private pharmaceutical companies throughout the West that are culpable for misleading information and advertising. Please don't respond that pharmaceutical companies should be government-run. Any intelligent person, who knows history, including the collapse of healthcare and pharmaceuticals in socialist countries knows such an idea is a non-starter.

@@normamimosa5991 You are clearly American and know absolutely nothing about the British medical situation. For one thing, you would never hear an ad about drugs like statins. The medical situation is almost entirely Government run, not private. What does the fact that the UK happen to be the fattest country in Europe have to do with anything. America and Britain are completely different with one exception. We speak the same language. Our medical situations are totally different. In the US your public have to pay through the nose to see a doctor.

This is a great conversation. Writing this comments at 24 min.. A very big question concerns the types of carbs that we can eat. Specifically, I mean whole grains like barley, quinoa, buckwheat and oats and rice, particularly brown rice. Can they lead to heart disease by raising blood sugar and insulin response? Should we eat them at all, especially if we know we have some carotid thickening?

Although this vid is 4 years old now all info mentioned is relevant but one thing escapes the discussion is that vascular integrity, specifically arterial, is that deficiency of vitamin C is responsible for microscopic cracks in arterial vessels. This degradation in vessel wall integrity allows the implantation of plaque deposits (later with calcium overlay) as the body’s attempt to “seal the damage” thus giving the appearance of lumen occlusion. It’s vitamin C deficiency that starts the damage but this fact escapes the discussion routinely. Sad... such an easy solution.

Some pretty explosive information here. We’ve all been brainwashed. I was put on statins 2 years ago, didn’t want to but was basically told they’d stop me having a heart attack etc so I begrudgingly took them. I came off them as I couldn’t tolerate the side effects even though my GP was keen to try me on another brand. I declined! Now with the information that’s coming to the fore I will never take them again even if I had a heart attack. Then there’s the T2D angle. Patients need to be told this stuff so they can make informed decisions.

Cholesterol is not a problem in and of itself. In fact your body MAKES cholesterol - it's critical for survival. Fat is also needed in your body. Many people have very high cholesterol and no blockage and heart disease. Eat well (lots of greens and NO SUGAR) and exercise, and you'll be fine. Just don't let them put you on drugs. The drugs are what will kill you. You're body is perfectly capable of healing itself. When you damage your arteries by eating badly and not exercising, your body will use cholesterol to repair the damage. It's not the cholesterol that is the problem, it's the artery damage. Don't damage your arteries, and the body won't try to repair with cholesterol. It's not about lowering your cholesterol in your body - that's just to get you to buy cholesterol lowering drugs. It's about not triggering your body to use the cholesterol against your artery walls to repair damage. Eat well and exercise AND avoid processed foods! Processed foods cause inflammation, and inflammation will damage your arteries and cause your body to react with cholesterol build up.

"Cholesterol is not a problem in and of itself. "Prolonged ingestion of a cholesterol- or saturated fatty acid-enriched diet induces chronic, often systemic, auto-inflammatory responses resulting in significant health problems worldwide" (Progatzky, et al, 2014). You are not consistent in your message. Dietary saturated fat and cholesterol induces inflammation. Are you advocating less inflammation from diet or not? I am not advocating refined sugar or saturated fat as they are both pro-inflammatory but the evidence indicates saturated fat is more inflammatory even than sugar or refined carbohydrates. "In fact your body MAKES cholesterol" Irrelevant. Your body makes bones, too. Humans do not need to chomp on bones or cholesterol. Humans already synthesize all the cholesterol that is necessary. Dietary cholesterol just risks heart disease, Alzheimer's, cancer, obesity, etc. It is an unnecessary risk and what are you using cholesterol to replace in your diet? Blueberries reduce serum cholesterol. By your reasoning this would be harmful, right? Yet replacing dietary cholesterol with blueberries would further reduce heart disease risk by another 8% per serving. "- it's critical for survival" No. Dietary cholesterol is not critical for survival, in fact it is life-defying. You are attempting to obfuscate the issue of endogenous and exogenous cholesterol. They are not the same. "Fat is also needed in your body" Off topic. There is no shortage of dietary fat in plant foods. "Many people have very high cholesterol and no blockage and heart disease" Their days are numbered. Inter-individual response variation is the concept I'd like to introduce you to. Some people get heart disease from dietary cholesterol, others get cancer, still others get obesity, inflammation, etc. Just because someone dies of another cholesterol-induced health condition before heart disease does not mean that cholesterol isn't still building up in arteries to elevate blood pressure. Fatty streaks from dietary cholesterol and saturated fat are seen in the avg 10-yr old and it is completely unnecessary early symptom of atherosclerosis, which takes years to develop. "Just don't let them put you on drugs" Better yet, don't give yourself an atheroma and then complain to drs that "they put you on drugs." You're feeding the system. "You're body is perfectly capable of healing itself" Depends on what you feed it. Blueberries prevent heart disease, cow flesh causes it. If you fight against your body your entire life, the body won't just heal itself. Statin drugs are not causing the #1 cause of death -heart disease. The meat intake is causing heart disease and more. "It's not about lowering your cholesterol in your body" False. "normal low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol range is 50 to 70 mg/dl for healthy human neonates, free-living primates, and other wild mammals (all of whom do not develop atherosclerosis). Randomized trial data suggest atherosclerosis progression and coronary heart disease events are minimized when LDL is lowered to

Reference is best. Retort with your own, if you have them. I'm not smart but I get tingly when people bring up references. This is the best way to learn about what's really happening in current dietary data.
@chrisbranciere2747
@chrisbranciere2747 6 жыл бұрын
"Reference is best." What does this sentence fragment mean? Is "Reference" a noun or verb in this context? Please include determiner words to assist so people can interpret your message. "Retort with your own, if you have them." My own references - as in references based on studies I conducted? Why? The speakers in this video aren't referencing their own studies? "I'm not smart but..." You don't need to be smart. If you are not cognitively intelligent, you can still arrive at a healthier diet than the low fiber, high fat diet promoted in this video but you'll likely need a fair amount of emotional intelligence, which is not as common and not typically developed as quickly. It will require honesty, empathy, and expression on your part and courage to face facts that are not always comfortable to consider while resisting backlash, denial and other primitive or manipulative defense mechanisms. "I get tingly when people bring up references." This is an important learning opportunity to embrace, then. That's a sign you are being exposed to accurate information, which is likely to cause dissonance and an urge to backlash in order to preserve your customary diet you were programmed to consume if you feel threatened by references from non-industry sponsored research on health risks of low fiber diets. Recruiting your emotional intelligence through empathy for the abused and/or mutilated animals that were unnecessarily consumed in the wasteful, high fat diet that is promoted in this unhelpful video is a reliable guide to recognizing biochemically compatible food since healthy humans are not psychologically or physiologically optimized for animal product consumption that uses opposing digestive processes and results in vastly different health outcomes to dietary fiber. Now, instead of running away from your uncomfortable "tingly" feeling you allude to, face the fear, look critically at the topic and relevant points, even if they do not jive with your current emotional understanding of the diet you were pre-assigned. "This is the best way to learn about what's really happening in current dietary data." This message is surely incomplete since the previous message was well-integrated, summarized with interleaved responses and quotes in context and only used references for support. Could you clarify whether you intended to convey a different message, please?

Dunzel is correct. Chris, wtf? Everything he said is correct. You're the one who is misleading people. Cholesterol is like a band-aide on the inside of the body. It's not the root problem - it is an indicator of a problem, and the problem is almost always dietary. At a minimum, stop consuming milk products and added sugars. Optimally, restrict your diet to a 4 hour window to increase insulin sensitivity, eat lot's of cruciferous vegetables, and get your calories from high fat nuts and fruits like avocados. "Carbs" (breads) and meat are not necessary, and usually harmful. However, if you refuse to give up meat, go for organ meat like liver.

"Dunzel is correct. Chris, wtf?" Fusion, follow along. I categorically refuted Dunzel's unsupported claims and I supported my counterarguments with references. You are merely begging the question that was already stultified. "Everything he said is correct." Now you're cheerleading. If you have an actual objection, you'll have to quote and post interleaved replies to the message you are imagining to be incorrect. "You're the one who is misleading people." How? Quote me and back it up with science - as I did with the points I refuted above. "Cholesterol is like a band-aide on the inside of the body." Off topic. Nobody said otherwise. Humans already synthesize sufficient cholesterol. The topic is the dietary intake of cholesterol, which is unnecessary and unhealthy. "It's not the root problem - it is an indicator of a problem" But the research refutes this. I informed you that cholesterol also contributes to inflammation and I support the fact that dietary cholesterol is in fact inflammatory now with references (Hainer, 2009, para 3; Subramanian, Mcmillen, Kirk & Chait, 2006). If you are so worried about inflammation, you would avoid both inflammatory triggers - refined sugar as well as dietary cholesterol. The dietary cholesterol and inflammation relationship is bidirectional. But clearly, blueberries are anti-inflammatory (Xie, Kang, Ferguson, Nagarajan, Badger & Wu, 2011). This is a no brainer as meat causes cancer, while berries prevent it. Which is food and which is poison? References Hainer, R. (2009). The cholesterol-inflammation connection. www.health.com/health/condition-article/0,,20232652,00.html Subramanian, S., Mcmillen, T. S., Kirk, E. A., & Chait, A. (2006). Blueberries reduce pro‐inflammatory cytokine TNF‐α and IL‐6 production in mouse macrophages by inhibiting NF‐κB activation and the MAPK pathway. Molecular nutrition & food research, 55(10), 1587-1591. DOI:10.1002/mnfr.201100344 "Optimally, restrict your diet to a 4 hour window to increase insulin sensitivity" Unnecessary and largely ineffective if one continues to consume dietary cholesterol. The most effective solution is not fasting but taking in dietary soluble fiber to absorb serum cholesterol particles. "...go for organ meat like liver." Please support this deadly advice with a reference and mechanism of action by which this would protect one from heart disease or cancer.

The medical industrial complex's failure to properly research and diagnose and treat diet and microbiome and sleep and vital nutritional deficiency issues (including those related to Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 and Magnesium deficiencies as well as iatrogenic prescription medication usage) is a major reason why psychiatric iatrogenesis is a primary contributor to the third leading cause of death in the U.S. (which is iatrogenesis in general). If the U.S. spent just a fraction of the over $40 billion each year it spends just on iatrogenic psychiatric drugs alone, for properly researching the issues discussed in this and related KZbin presentations we would probably, Lord willing, achieve an absolute revolution in medical efficacy improvement and iatrogenesis reduction. This "fact" that total cholesterol to HDL ratio is important is in fact not so important. A fat burning keto athlete will have very high LDL beacause they are fit and burn fat. More important is the ratio of HDL to triglycerides. If you really want to identify your risk and you are over 40, get a CAC. See Ivor Cummins.

Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs it the liver, there's no added benefit to eating more. Unprocessed foods is the key to health, and there's nothing wrong with healthy carbohydrates, which is the most abundant macronutrient in nature. It's the type of food people are choosing to eat. I tried keto for 9 months and it made me extremely ill and provoked an autoimmune response in me and food intolerances which previously I had never had. I look at every argument from all diet sides and now that research is accumulating about the gut microbiome, it's been shown they love fiber and those who consume high fiber foods - fruits, vegetables, unprocessed whole grains, nuts, seeds, beans, resistant starches, are the healthiest, leanest and live the longest. Eat olives not olive oil, eat avocados, not avocado oil...just how you should eat the whole orange not orange juice... Fiber is the key to good health, as the healthy good microbes in your gut rely on it to flourish... Whereas high consumption of meat, dairy and processed foods causes bad microbes to flourish and produce toxic endotoxins such as TMAO which leads to inflammation. Natural whole foods 90 percent plant based and high grade meat very rarely just for B12 unless you prefer a supplement.

With all due respect, where are the links to all studies mentioned in this video? In what country or region in the world people ate high fat diet and lived beyond 100 years? Okinawa or Seventh-day Adventists? Their diet primarily is based on plants with high carbs, low fat and protein. We need to carefully examine data presented by studies mentioned here such as study duration, sponsors, control group etc. before starting to consume more fat rich food like oil, dairy and meat products.

Jesse Davis so your saying that vegans et al don't get diabetes? Gee I'm confused cause I know 2 vegan diabetics. Meat doesn't give you diabetes. Sugar fool sugar. It is a carbohydrate resistance disease and a low carb high fat diet will reverse it. Meat is a really important food for us omnivore's which human are. P.S. love to see the thoroughly non big corn/soya business paid legit research that found what you claim on meat.

Just ordered California every day "real" olive oil from Amazon and going to increase the tablespoons ingested daily to increase my "good" cholesterol and reduce the "bad," so doctor will stop tripping. Have already improved my diet-- removing simple sugars and carbs. Hardly eat any carbs except fruits and vegetables and some brown rice cakes. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is complex disease that is so hard to get a good physician for especially with help for in the age just before 18 as far as insurance coverage goes. Also copays for specialists are too high to recieve care and this is just not right. I need MRI for adenoma/complex cyst of breast and copay 132$ also experiencing angioedema thought from lisinipril and norvasc but also occured after vit d supplementation.... however its just not fair the high cost of copays blocking ones chance for health care. I know off topic but I am a disabled RN and very frustrated about the inability to obtain health care because of high copays.
