Have you watched Moonlight? What did you guys think of it? Had to cut out many parts/music due to copyright issues :( but after multiple edits, I finally got the video up and running! It's very unfortunate the video had to change a lot but I'm happy I can share it in one form or another! Enjoy!

The way this film handles food and food preparation is utterly heartbreaking. To prepare a meal for someone is love and compassion. His mother never did. Juan and his partner made him food. Then in the climax when Kevin makes him food. It's one of the most subtle and profound sequences of compassion I've ever seen in cinema. The diner scene with Kevin and Chiron is incredibly beautiful and very deep.

Your analysis is SPOT ON, I hadn't made this connection.....(& I'm a home cook !!!) This is yet ANOTHER reminder to me that All works of art require SEVERAL VIEWINGS , OR RE READING OR RE LISTENINGS TO PICK UP SUBTLE OR not so subtle things we may miss the first time around,... thanks for this thoughtful Post. I have nothing in common with the main character: female, lesbian, asian, have a relatively good home life, having both still married parents. Nothing at all besides being gay. I cried so much watching this film. I somehow feel the alienation he feels growing up being gay and trying to figure yourself out without anybody knowing. Especially when he was being attacked by Kevin, it feels like the only good thing in your life isn’t good anymore. I love this movie to pieces.

Same here, the isolation throughout the film is beyond a demographic.

as someone who isn’t gay, this movie still resonates with me so much. it helped me realize so much about myself and my true self. watching this film just fucking floors me. i love this movie for so many reasons but mostly bc now i’m comfortable with who i am, and once i figure out who i am, it won’t matter what it is bc i’ll be happy. (and damn is this movie just beautiful) it helped me realize my sexuality too bc it showed me how i’m probably not gay considering i didn’t resonate with those parts of the film and i will always think of this movie as the defining factor in my sexuality. and water will always be changed for me. it feels like my true self. the self that this movie helped realize.

"Nothing at all besides....." being human thats the only thing you need to have in common and you dont actually even need that. you cant relate to nemo in finding nemo? why even look at this in terms of what is different? with that mentality you'll only ever limit your ability to connect with others.

Same. I think this movie is like pure poetry. Not many films exist in such a pure form. I hate that it's shine was partly taken by La La Land.

what i love about this movie is how i’m not even close to this character, yet he’s the most like me i’ve ever met. i’m straight, hispanic, living in a upper middle class setting and yet this character is so personal. this movie taught me so much. being yourself and discovering who u are is beautiful and is what the meaning of life is. helping me realize my personality isn’t something to hold back bc myself is what’s important. i fucking love this movie, my favorite of all time

i will never forget the emotions that I felt when I first saw this movie and the scene of Chiron's mom yelling at him but you can't hear a thing. it sounds much louder than if it did have audio. what hurts even more is the use of pink light behind her which normally pink symbolizes affection, harmony, inner peace, and approachability, but with that scene it depicts the exact opposite which is the betrayal, the lack of care, support, and love from a parental figure.

I saw a lot of myself in chirone minus the drug dealing and mother on drugs. Trying to find oneself in the hood as a young gay black male in the 90s was hell. No internet or social media. We were all navigating in the dark. Love this movie because it forces me to see the weakness in appearing strong to everyone and strength in being emotional vulnerable to the people I cherish.

In the end Chiron becomes much more like Juan than you expect. Juan was a drug dealer and his "persona" was the hard outer shell required to protect himself in the world. But behind it with regular people he was himself. A man who was open, accepting, and loving. This is who he chose to be. Chiron as well is a drug dealer who is trying to find himself. His transformation into Black is what everyone expects him to be. But by the end of the movie he's willing to change and opens to his true self. Someone who is vulnerable someone who chooses to be himself.
@Lucy-tp5gl
@Lucy-tp5gl Жыл бұрын
I also think the difference between juan and Chiron as black initially is, that Juan is still in touch with his loving, open side ( with Teresa and little f. eg.) and Chiron is very reclused still before meeting with Kevin. I think Kevin taught him to be vulnerable and in tune with his sensitive side .

Rewatching this video and especially the movie over the years, from first discovering my sexuality and terrified to be myself to becoming who Chiron ended up being as “Black” , this film means the world to me as I grew up in a very similar fashion to Chiron with a broken home and an abusive mother. This film broke me and made me whole at the same time. I have never felt more seen and more loved by a films characters and the message it sends. I love this movie and I hope people love it just the same.

this was so good. such a great analysis for such a great film. good work! the soundtrack and everything in this film is beyond perfect. it made me ball my eyes out. i feel his pin in trying to find my true identity. it’s hard. i haven’t had the prefect home life. though my mom or dad weren’t drug addicts i still suffered verbal and physical abuse. and my parents separated when i was a teen. the long and painful search for ones identity can be scary and upsetting to say the least. i haven’t found my identity and am still figuring it out. this movie just made me cry. it was painful seeing how i felt all depicted into a film. it hurt.

I know right. Moonlight is such an amazing but depressing movie. As a heterosexual black young man myself born in 1998 from Lakemba, New South Wales, Australia with healthy positive masculinity I absolutely have no problem if boys and men around the world want to show their emotions because we are human beings with emotional feelings. Being bisexual and being homosexual does not make you less of a man & there are bisexual plus homosexual teenage boys & men who are masculine around the world. We males really need to show empathy for boys and men & listen to how they feel inside instead of mocking them & rejecting them by claiming that they are not manly or masculine enough because that is called bullying & it is a dangerous game. What is a man? He is a human male adult enough said men do not have to prove their manhood because that is a huge lie made up by old school gender activist bigots. As a mature young man myself plus other men around the world we do not have to prove our masculinity because that is just machismo not masculinity, so to all my fellow brothers out there just be a compassionate mature gentleman that is it end of story. To all my fellow human brothers and sisters around the world always remember be genuine & take care of one another.

This was so beautiful! I've been wanting to watch this film but have never had the time or been in the right mind set to do so. Hopefully I can watch it today after work. Watching this video I couldn't help but think of a video that has been burned in to my mind of a baby boy, a young little black boy getting smacked around because he said he liked boys. The abuser recording his action like it's something to be proud of. I wish black men would let other black men be who they are. There is such an urge to be a "man" and to be a "man" you have to fill a mold that can be quite toxic for lack of a better word. I know it's something that happens I a lot of different races. But this movie and the video of the child being abused had black men. I hope this comment doesn't rub people the wrong way. It's just something I've noticed watching many commentary videos and such.

I appreciate your analysis of the symbolism of water and you observation that the audience in this film is not a spectator but a character. I love that you take the film seriously. It was fun watching this and getting to think about the film again. I think it's interesting that, according to director Barry Jenkins, 'Smear the Queer" is not what the culture that is being portrayed ever called this interaction.

Your writing and your analysis is leagues ahead of most video producers on youtube. Lots of people can nail the video essay style, and the sound of saying something meaningful, but not many of them actually have that much substance behind that. Thanks for your work! I'll bet you anything your channel blows up in the next year. If it helps any: I think the algorithm is recognizing that your videos appeal to Ryan Hollinger's viewers, and I think you're going to start getting a good amount of traffic from there.
