Thanks @Talon_Fitness for this excellent video! They are very informative and as you said at the end of this one, bring awareness! I have had 2 questions in mind for quite a while (since you started to cover micronutrients) and this video about Selenium motivated me to finally ask you, so it would be very kind if you (or someone else actually!) can answer :) The 2 questions are quite related to each other and are about the dietary reference intakes (DRI): - Do they account for (avg.?) absorption? For instance, if one knows that his/her iron sources are mostly plant-based, should s.he aim to achieve (way) higher daily intake (w.r.t the low absorption rate) than the DRI? - Similarly, every time you list the most relevant sources of a nutrient, do they correspond to "raw quantities" (I think they are) or do the figures already account for the respective absorption rates (i.e., they corrrespond to what one can expect to correctly "absorb")? This video motivates me to finally ask because even though I knew before that brazil nuts are very (very) selenium densed, I did not know that selenium is actually quite available in other foods, and then the DRI were so low... to the point that I might sometimes reach the upper bound (when I have brazil nuts in my breakfast!) Thanks for reading and thanks again for this amazing content!

1:25 I find the difference of the definition of mineral between nutrition and natural sciences interesting. In geology, a mineral is a compound with a crystalline structure. Take silica for example, SiO2. Glass and quartz are both composed of it, but quartz is a mineral whereas glass is not, because it doesn't have a crystal structure. I've wondered what the strict definition of mineral is in nutrition, is it just "element necessary for the body?"

I was hoping you would mention how Brazil nuts are incredibly unreliable when it comes to selenium, due to the fluctuations of selenium. Yes, one nut might be enough to meet your daily intake need, but it also as well might not. Eat a few nuts on a regular basis and you might exceed the tolerable upper limit and damage your body. I would strongly recommend not relying on Brazil nuts for selenium (which most of the time when someone does so, this someone is on a more plant-based diet).
@UltimateSpanky732 ай бұрын

As the video shows, it isnt and may cause excessive selenium intake. Most micronutrients are abundant in nature and needed in small amounts! Dont waste money supplementing them unless instructed by a physician (and be sure to be a good one).

Hi! I remember reading somewhere that I found out that kidney pork is surprisingly high in selenium, maybe more than brazil nuts. I'm not sure about it?
@Quran_eee2 ай бұрын
All organ meat has high Pill is high too Doesn't matter higher or lower, matters you're consuming at least 1 Selenium source
@Chris____.Ай бұрын
Selenium is removed from the body throught Urine. Kidney removes waste/excees throught Urine. Wild Pigs eat mostly Nuts & Mushrooms. = Pig Kidney is filled with the excees Selenium from the Diet they eat. Your info is extremely accurate but only when taken with a massive Pinch of Salt. Most store sold Pork is from factories where their diet is mostly comprised of Excees vegetables and little in Selenium. On Another opposite, you could live in some parts of Europe or South America where a lot of Pork is still Wild grown or has to be Wild by law, and their diet is heavily made of Nuts. Last point of argument could be that MOST of the Selenium in Kidney pork is useless, since all of the Nutrients are quickly absorved and all that remains from that Selenium in the kidney is waste composites.

@langustajablecznaАй бұрын
if you are really curious, just use a search engine and get verifiable, real info instead of trusting a random comment who could be bullshitting you. I don't get why people do it. I will only answer because selenium toxicity can be fatal. Acute toxicity will result in diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, general pain, problems with nails and hair. If it's more severe then you experience mental issues and lack of energy, dizziness, memory loss, depression, anxiety and such, as well as problems with heart and lungs. It is very rare and hard to overdose fatally. Chronic overexposure is more common and dangerous, it can be neurotoxic and harmful to mental health
