Truth. I never thought I would hear such precise truth my life, largely due to fear of blasphemy. As a protestant who has been and partaken in this Pentecostal horror, I chose (or was led) to not utter my gibberish again as I used to do it while shaking my fist at God at a dark time of my life. This stuff truly is terrifying, thank you so very much. God bless His true church.
@OgeronimonominoregO4 ай бұрын
Your fear of blasphemy is quite justified as this priest is teaching falsely on the gift of tongues, saying not that it is a gift of God to be asked for and received with humility and joy, but that it is a sign of possession. This is very evil talk coming from this priest. Why has he not been censured for this by his bishop?

From the time I first witnessed people "praying in tongues" - I had a strong feeling it was demonic. (I was an 18 year old girl away at college, exploring "new" things). I continued to feel a repulsion of this so-called gift, for years, even to this day. Maybe some of it is legit - but common sense tells us much of it is degrading - and God does not want to degrade His children. Also, Pentecost was so Pure and Powerful - how could anyone think that that overwhelmingly beautiful event could ever be exactly repeated. Thank you for upholding the "wonder" of the Holy Ghost's work at Pentecost, and warning people to be "careful" about uttering strange sounds when they don't understand who they might actually be praising. ( I must admit though, I really could use a couple of the charismatic gifts to help me accomplish my charitable goals !). May God bestow many lovely Blessings upon you for your helpful candor which serves to protect the unwary from harm, and which honors the True Pentecost. - Lynda Power

"I had a strong feeling it was demonic." Thankfully, God's revelation is not based on your feelings. "I continued to feel a repulsion of this so-called gift, for years, even to this day." That's very telling. God's gifts should not repulse but attract you. You should praise and thank God for His gifts, not mock and demean them as "degrading." Please reconsider your position and listen to the Church rather than to one highly imprudent priest's ridiculous opinions.

The Holy Spirit is for everyone, as Peter preached, "This is what you see and hear...The promise is for you and your children." While not everyone receives the gift of tongues, God still does richly distribute His gifts among the faithful. And he encourages us to ask and to seek, as Paul clearly says on this subject. The gifts are for the building up of the Church. If you all say that the gifts don't exist, or come from devil, or they are all fake, is it any wonder to you that the Church suffers from a lack of power and a lack of witness?

Excellent and proper teaching on Pentecost as a one time event. And what gifts the holy spirit gave the Apostles and the Blessed Mother in the descent of the holy spirit. -The incorrect understanding of the gift of speaking in tounges today. -To pray for a new Pentecost or to speak in tounges is blasphomey. thank you and God Bless.
@OgeronimonominoregO4 ай бұрын
Seems like he was using "one time event" to use as a cudgel by which to bash the faithful who have experienced the infilling of the Spirit along with the gifts of the Spirit in modern times. While it is true that Pentecost was an unrepeatable historical event, this does not by any stretch mean that we are not to also be baptized in the Holy Spirit and receive the gifts as well. If that was the priest's intent it was quite deceptive and obviously wrong. "To pray for a new Pentecost or to speak in tounges is blasphomey." Nonsense. Idiotic anti-Catholic false teaching. On the contrary, we may ask the Father for all good things. Praying for God to pour out the Spirit afresh and to distribute His gifts today for the building up of the Church is not and cannot possibly be blasphemy. That is a completely deranged and evil teaching. On the contrary, to teach falsely that the gift of tongues is not of the Spirit but of the devil is blasphemous. This is what the Pharisees falsely charged Jesus with. To say that the work of God is the work of the devil means that one places themselves in the territory of the unforgivable sin.

My understanding of tongues is that you know what your saying but you don't realize or know by hearing yourself that your speaking in another language. So say I preached the gospel in English the only language I know and speak and I heard myself speak english but I spoke in a Spanish speaking community. They heard every word I said in their native tongue even though I heard myself speak english. Another way is the opposite I preached the gospel in English but spoke another language. Most of the crowd does not understand me but one or a few people would interpret what I said. Speaking gibberish or supposedly in the language of Angels or the first people before the tower of Babel I don't know about all that.
@OgeronimonominoregO4 ай бұрын
"My understanding of tongues is that you know what your saying but you don't realize or know by hearing yourself that your speaking in another language." Scripture says they all spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. Not sure how you can say the Apostles did not realize they were speaking other languages. The people who heard them obviously confirmed to them that they were as those people testified to it, which is why they were so struck by it seeing that the speakers were unlearned men from the back country. The gift of tongues IS the speaking in other languages. That's what the phrase means. Of course, God can do anything, so if there are variations on this where the speaker is as you say, I guess that's possible. It's also possible that God can work a miracle in tongues that is focused on the hearers and not the speaker. But the Pentecost event seems to be just as described in the text, that they spoke other languages. Speaking in tongues is certainly not "gibberish" however, and speaking like that of God's gift is quite sinful. What a lot of modern unbelieving critics fail to understand is also that there are different kinds of tongues gifts spoken of in the Bible. Paul explains this. There is the prophetic gift of tongues which requires an interpretation and then there is also a private/personal type of tongues used for prayer.

Fr. Ripperger is way way off on this topic. He is actually teaching falsehoods and sinning and leading others into sin in the process by mocking the gift. If he were 'orthodox' he would not be putting out weird teachings about believers not being allowed to pray for freely distributed gifts of God that build up the Church. His thesis is not only wrong but nonsensical and harmful. You have things exactly backwards. Fr. Goring is giving you the actual Church teaching. Ripperger is giving his own false teaching and then falsely condemning those who actually receive and use God's gifts with gratitude and humility.

I'snt it common sense, that if you don't understand whats coming out of your mouth you shouldn't really say it at all. Even if it is from the Holy Spirit, you should still understand what you are speaking, surely!! Anyway the Holy Spirit works in so many other wonderful ways that you can fully understand. ;-)
@OgeronimonominoregO4 ай бұрын
Paul says quite clearly that a man who speaks in a tongue "speaks to God" and "no one understands him because he utters mysteries in the Spirit." Don't try to reduce the mysteries of God to "common sense." It doesn't work that way. Human beings are ignorant of a lot of things and Scripture says that God's ways are far above our ways.

“Pentecost is not over,” blessed Helena Guerra wrote. “In fact, it is continually going on in every time and in every place, because the Holy Spirit desired to give himself to all men and all who want him can always receive him, so we do not have to envy the apostles and the first believers; we only have to dispose ourselves like them to receive him well, and he will come to us as he did to them.” Guerra is the foundress of the Oblates of the Holy Spirit, a religious congregation recognized by the Church in 1882. Pope John XXIII called Guerra “a modern-day apostle of the Holy Spirit” as he beatified her in 1959. Her second miracle required for canonization has been approved but her canonization date has not, as of the writing of this comment, yet been set.

Author: Ron Graham What is Speaking in Tongues? -Xenoglossia versus Glossolalia Speaking in tongues, or “the gift of tongues” was one of several miraculous powers first given to the apostles of Christ and other Christians in the first century. Today, those of the Charismatic or Pentecostal persuasion claim to speak in tongues. The original gift of tongues was the power to preach the gospel fluently in a language that the speaker had never learned or known in any way. Such speech is technically called xenoglossia or xenoglossy. The phenomena observed today is different. It is an “ecstatic utterance” technically called “glossolalia”. In this lesson we are going to... (1) Describe xenoglossia and glossolalia; (2) Look at the Biblical description of speaking in tongues; (3) Look at so-called “speaking in tongues” today. 1 The Phenomena: Xenoglossia and Glossolalia xenoglossia “speaking in tongues” -that is, speaking in a language which one has never learned or known. Note -The term xenoglossia is defined in Chambers’s dictionary as “the spontaneous use of a language which the speaker has never heard or learned. No scientifically attested case of xenoglossia has ever come to light.” From Greek, xeno strange, glossa tongue.” This phenomena, which can rightly be described as “the gift of tongues”, is the ability to speak fluently a language one has never studied, had any exposure to, or “known” in any natural sense. Yet one can speak it as well as people who do know it as their mother tongue. This phenomena is not evident in the world today. The fact that xenoglossia (xenoglossy) is not evident today, does not mean that it has never occurred in the past. When it did happen, however, it was a miraculous event, because it is not a natural or innate human ability. glossolalia “ecstatic utterances” -that is, uttering language-like but unintelligible sounds usually in a state of elation. Note -The term “glossolalia” is defined in Chambers’s dictionary as “the phenomena of spontaneously uttering unintelligible sounds believed to form part of an unknown language or languages.” From Greek, glossa tongue, laleein to talk. Glossolalia or “ecstatic utterance” is a common phenomenon, practised by many religions, pagan as well as “Christian”. You can make recordings of it, examine it, write histories and case studies about it. You can even practice it yourself if you so choose. Two Components of Glossalalia There are two components to this phenomena, neither of which is miraculous. Utterance of language-like sounds. There is nothing extraordinary about this. Even children, before they speak a real language, chatter away in imitation of language, yet unintelligibly. Anybody can do this. Ecstasy, trance-like elation. There is nothing extraordinary about this either. It is harder to do on purpose than the first component, however anybody can do it without using drugs. (Mind you, ecstasy should not be induced for its own sake, because it may give you a high that is followed by depression and addiction.) 2 Tongues on the Day of Pentecost Now let us examine the Biblical description of "speaking in tongues" to see which, if any, of these two phenomena match that description. A Miraculous Sign According to the scriptures, speaking in tongues is one of several signs which were to follow those who believed in Christ. "And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover" (Mark 16:17-18). This is not a complete list of miraculous signs. You might like to compare it with another list found in 1Corinthians 12:7-11. Note the signs... Casting out demons Speaking with new tongues Taking up serpents without harm Drinking deadly poison without harm Laying hands on the sick, who then recover We are looking at a list of miraculous signs, not natural abilities. The speaking in new tongues is therefore not glossolalia (ecstatic utterance) because that is a natural ability. The true Pentecostal tongues, spoken by the apostles, are described by the very people who heard them: "We each hear in our own language in which we were born." Description of Tongues -Acts 2:1-11 ¶“1When the day of Pentecost was in full swing, they were all together, fiercely united. 2And a sound came unexpectedly out of Heaven, as borne of a violent wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3Also they could see divided tongues like flames, and one sat upon each of them. 4They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave utterance to them.” (Acts 2:1-4). ¶“5Many Jews were staying in Jerusalem, pious men from every nation under heaven. 6The crowd gathered as the news spread, and they were confounded, because each heard them speak in his own language. 7So they were all amazed and marvelled, saying to each other, 'Look, aren't all those who speak Galilaeans? 8How then do we each hear in the language of our birthplace? 9We are Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabians, we hear them speak in our own tongues the wonderful works of God!' ” (Acts 2:5-11). Some say the miracle caused listeners to hear in their own language and therefore to understand the speech. Why then did Paul criticise using the gift of tongues in church -saying that the people listening do not understand the tongues being spoken and therefore are not edified by what they hear (1Corinthians 14:1-28)? The miracle recorded here was not in the hearing but in the speaking. The apostles "began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." The apostles were not speaking one language whilst the people were hearing different languages to that which was spoken. The apostles were actually speaking in the other tongues that people were hearing. They were languages native and familiar to the hearers, but completely new to the apostles -languages which the apostles had not learned by study, or by natural exposure, yet were suddenly able to speak. This scripture we have been looking at (Acts 2:4-8) is the only place in all of the Bible where "speaking in tongues" is actually described. The phenomena is mentioned in several places, but only in this one place is it described so that we may know exactly what happened. It Wasn't Glossolalia What Luke describes here in Acts 2:4-8 bears no similarity to what we observe when we hear and see "ecstatic utterance" or glossolalia being practised. Luke’s description does, however, fit perfectly with the definition of xenoglossia. We are forced to conclude that the gift of tongues among Christians of New Testament times was miraculous xenoglossia, not commonplace glossolalia. 3 Tongues Today It Doesn't Happen Today Australia is rich with citizens and visitors who know many exotic languages. But they will not hear them when they listen to “ecstatic utterances” claimed to be “the gift of tongues” today. They might hear plenty of hype and plenty of claims and plenty of noise. However they will not be able to say, "We hear them speak in our own language to which we were born" (Acts 2:8). Not Like the 1st Century Churches The use of “tongues” today does not follow the practice of New Testament times. The primary purposes of the gift of tongues was to be a sign to unbelievers and to teach them message of the gospel (1Corinthians 14:19,22). "In church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue... Tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers" (1Corinthians 14:19,22). In church, people were not allowed to exercise the gift of tongues, but were to keep silent, except for three at the most, provided they did not all talk at the same time, and that someone interpreted for the sake of those who could not understand the language (1Corinthians 14:27-28). "If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God" (1Corinthians 14:27-28). Folk who claim the gift of tongues today do not generally exercise the gift according to the order and purpose laid down by Paul. Rather they generally compare more with the manner in which the Corinthians exercised the gift before Paul corrected them. Don't Be Deceived Today’s ‘speaking in tongues’ is glossolalia. This is not the gift of New Testament times. The true miraculous gift or sign described in the Bible is xenoglossia. This was a miraculous power enabling a person to speak to others in their first language, even though the speaker did not know that language. Tongue-speakers today fail to do what the apostles did on the day of Pentecost. If you carefully observe what passes for speaking in tongues today, you will NOT see any amazing miraculous sign such as occurred on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13).

Excellent talk on Pentecost and the dangers of modern charismatic movements. Though, I'd be careful not to fall into the denigration of an ecumenical council (Vatican II) just because it didn't teach anything infallibly (not accusing Fr. of doing this). That is do not fall into rash judgment of an ecumenical council just because some bad actors within and without the Church may abuse it to justify their departure from the sound perennial doctrine taught by Christ's Church. In fact, those who read the documents of the Council will find the perennial teachings of the Church repeated and in that sense, the full assent of faith of the faithful which is to be given to the extraordinary Magisterium is still to be given. This warning is given because many identifying themselves as lay-faithful Catholics appoint themselves as a magisterium to those with itching ears (2 Timothy 4:3) and start pontificating on social media platforms. *By definition* the Magisterium lies with the pope and all bishops teaching *in union* with him. Schism, heresy, and disunity are serious sins.

He makes a false statement at 5:08, claiming that it is "mistaken" to pray for the gift of tongues. We are told to seek the gifts by St. Paul in Scripture. Moreover we may pray for any good gift from God according to His will. Of course, He is the one who distributes the gifts to whom He wills, but no one disputes that. He goes on immediately to then claim that no one has the gift of tongues today, which is an extremely rash judgment and obviously false since many many people do. It also seems to deny Scripture since Scripture regards the gifts as a normal part of the Christian life which are for the purpose of building up the Church. If he means to teach the cessationist doctrine, which claims that the gifts ceased with the death of the last Apostle, this is actually a Protestant doctrine, not Catholic. The gifts are for today and every age of the Church. The Church is charismatic by nature. Then he continues his false anti-Catholic teaching with absolute mockery, citing one example of someone who claims to have heard someone speaking in a language where they were praising Satan. Assuming this were true, this is obviously not an example of the gift of tongues but rather of a disturbed or demonically influenced individual engaging in sin. This has nothing at all to do with the graces of the Renewal but is just part of spiritual warfare. That Ripperger would use something like this as part of an argument in support of his false teaching is quite troubling as it shows either extreme ignorance of logical thinking or a direct intention to muddy the waters, to instill people with fear, and to mock the actual graces and deny the actual fruit of the Renewal. There is no excuse for either. He seems to prove his insincerity and/or irrationality by then speaking about people in mental institutions and people undergoing exorcisms - as if this is reflective of Catholic charismatics today who have been filled with the Holy Spirit and received the gift of tongues. Absolutely outrageous for anyone let alone a priest to disparage fellow Catholics in this way and to deny that legitimate gifts of the Spirit exist in the Church.

This sermon leaves me genuinely uncertain whether this priest has even read 1 Corinthians 14. Seriously, anyone watching this video should take a few minutes and read it, by the second verse, you’ll see how off base the priest is. For example, he’s dead wrong when he claims that the gift of tongues is always intelligible to either the person speaking it or the person hearing it. If that were the case, why does Paul tell the Corinthians to pray for the gift of interpretation, also what does the priest make of 1 Cor 14:2 which says “ For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.” On that note, if we can’t/shouldn’t pray for gifts, why does Paul tell us to pray for the gift of interpretation? Here the priest is making the same error of protestants who think works are not necessary for sanctification. Ditto for his claim that Pentecost is a single event in history, he’s making the same error as protestants who say Catholics re sacrifice Christ at the mass. If the gift of tongues isn’t ordered toward the sanctification of the person, why does Paul say “Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church?” (1 Cor 14:4) There have been many abuses in the Charismatic movement, but the traditionalist movement is neck deep in it’s own abuses and errors as well. Instead of taking potshots at each other and spreading innuendos and aspersions, the movements should embrace their common ground of doctrinal orthodoxy and use that as a foundation to bridge their differences in liturgy and practice.

DrOman5596 Read it and yes you are in error. Notice that St Paul lists this as the least of the gifts. Funny all those that spoke in tongues throughout church history also raised people from the dead. Yet nobody is raising anyone from the dead today but all these people claim to 'speak in tongues' that nobody can understand. Gibberish is not 'tongues'. As John Hardon said "the charismatic movement came from Pentecostalism" there are others sermons blasting this 'movement'

"Read it and yes you are in error." If you think that, kindly address at least one of the arguments I made in my comment. "Notice that St Paul lists this as the least of the gifts." So what? Paul still calls it a means of personal edification. "Funny all those that spoke in tongues throughout church history also raised people from the dead" That's a bold claim. In which vatican archive did you stumble upon this complete record of people who have used the gift of tongues? You're also incorrect, unless of course it somehow slipped Paul's mind to make some mention of the fact that everyone in the Church of Corinth was raising people from the dead. The way he writes about it, it's clear that tongues were commonplace. "Yet nobody is raising anyone from the dead today" They're the least of the spiritual gifts, and you're surprised that the people who get them aren't raising people from the dead? "but all these people claim to 'speak in tongues' that nobody can understand." Neither could the people in Corinth, that's why Paul told them to pray for the gift of interpretation. "Gibberish is not 'tongues'." Begging the question much? How do you know it's gibberish? There are 6,500 languages being spoken today, and tens of thousands of languages that have been spoken. "the charismatic movement came from Pentecostalism" You're committing the genetic fallacy. You can't refute an idea just by objecting to how it began. I've clearly demonstrated that there is precedent for the gift of tongues in the Bible.

DrOman5596 I'm laughing at the 'so what' line you said. Looks like you pick and choose what to believe? So what is well St Paul listed them in order (listing is meaningful in scriptures) and so far there isn't any tongue speakers raising anyone from the dead. The least is somehow the 'most common'? Riiiiight. The charismatic movement is Pentecostal. Fact. No fallacy just simple fact You've clearly demonstrated nothing but your opinion It's not gibberish? Fine find me where ANY saint that spoke in tongues spoke gibberish & needed someone to twist a teaching for anyone to somehow interpret? St Vincent Ferrer didn't know any other language but his own YET everyone heard him in their own language (like the apostles). Others like that too YET you need someone to make up an interpretation to figure your gibberish up. Amazing how you need consolations to think it's God. Seek the God of consolations not the consolations of God as St John of the Cross stated. You'll like the other sermons on pentacostalism & tongues up on here
@DrOman55969 жыл бұрын
Sensus Fidelium I'm not picking and choosing, just observing that your argument is a non sequitur. Wouldn't you want even the least of Gods gifts? I'm honestly not sure how you got the idea that the gift of tongues must be accompanied by raising people from the dead. Was everyone who spoke tongues in the Corinthian church raising people from the dead? I've clearly demonstrated that the priest is incorrect, unless you can explain why Paul told the Corinthians to pray for the gift of interpretation. "Fine find me where ANY saint that spoke in tongues spoke gibberish & needed someone to twist a teaching for anyone to somehow interpret?" St. Paul. Seriously, did you even read 1 Cor 14? "Amazing how you need consolations to think it's God." Amazing how you jump to conclusions about people you don't know. I've never said tongues are necessary to know God. Some charismatics will claim you need them, some traditionalists will claim that John Paul ll was a part of the KGB. That doesn't prove anything

I totally disagree with you father! If I would meet you I’d probably ask you this: have you ever been in a prayer group?? Second; I’d inform you that every prayer group that I’ve been to; whenever a manifestation of the Holy Spirit initially through the gif of tongues, then following a moment of silence and then another person would translate that into our language. Usually was a word of encouragement, or a word related to repent, other times was a word of how God care and loves us, even word of forgiveness, etc!!! What about the many and many of thousands of conversions from people who’s have witnesses the mighty power of the Holy Spirit. Doesn’t that count??? In regards of what father was sharing about a “priest who happened to walked out a meeting, and after was asked why? I am astonished to know that priest was stating that one of the language was praising satan instead. Here’s my question to both priest: Aren’t priest supposed and empowered by the authority of Catholic Church to REBUKE that manifestation of Satan; instead of walking away??? Jesus rebuked Peter by saying “back-off satan” when Peter was saying to Jesus this: “no master you’re not going to die, etc..! And if you check a few paragraphs above the same Peter had answered Jesus when he asked all the apostles “And You Who do you say I am?” Remember that and what Jesus had said to Peter in front of all the apostles???

With all due respect father, you reject the second Vatican Council, a council of the Catholic Church. I'm very wary of your videos now. You have really inspired me at times and I'm greatful to you for that. But if you teach contrary to the Catholic Faith, which includes the second vatican council, then I must no longer listen to you.

Vatican II is not infallible mate. Nothing Father said was against Catholic doctrine

@@gabrielc1779 Are you prepared to say that on behalf of Christ's Church and in the presence of God? That is a very serious statement.

Ian Jackson Literally no one claims Vatican II is infallible, not even the council fathers did. It was a pastoral council, not a dogmatic one. Not even once does the council says “this is infallible and obligatory”. If it was infallible Rome wouldn’t have given the Institut du Bon Pasteur the right to criticize it

@@injcksn1994👍 the Trads pick and choose what parts of Church teaching they wish to abide by and which they don't. There are certain priests, Bishops and others that they follow and Obey and others that they do not. You're right for calling that out and not following their lead.

@@zwijac Wrong! I am authentically Catholic, raised pre-Vatican 2 and THAT council was the one who picked and chose what they wanted based on input by PROTESTANTS. What in the world were they doing in the council? Just look at the fruits of it. Many of the clergy don't believe in the True Presence which is made obvious by the reception in the hand! And fragments being trampled underfoot! Their goal was to reduce it to a common meal and so it is with many of them. I suggest you study the Council of Trent and other Orthodox teachings on the faith. Only our Church has the fullness of faith.🙏
