This is definitely one of the first episodes I saw as a toddler. For some weird reason, I recall this episode being the first time I saw James. The turntable scene had me so confused because I didn’t know why he was spinning around so fast (I was too young to comprehend the narration).

The thing I loved about the episode is the small details they put on the models during the spin. You can possible see the drivers in James with the arms up while he spins and then they give him a bit of green in the face after spinning him for so long.

1:36 I think of that one excursion in the 1970s where Union Pacific 8444 (844) pulled an excursion backwards for part of the return journey due to issues with the wye in Laramie (she ended being turned on a different wye east of Laramie before leading the train forward for the remainder of the trip).

Tenders and Turntables was very entertaining and funny to me as a kid for obvious reasons and how it was a rare episode where the word "fat" was used in the US dub, said by James to Gordon when James sees Gordon backwards and Gordon tries to warn James. I think it's a great suggestion to have a LMS Fowler 4F repainted as James and spun around on that turntable for events. I think that is something the Thomas Land theme parks would never think of doing.

the Midland Railway had a light engine policy where they would only build engines of a certain weight and power as their infrastructure was low gradients and built for ease of traffic. This works fine in places sch as Derbyshire, Leicestershire and down to their London St Pancras terminalbut becomes a problem when they bilt the Settle to Carlisle railway which is the hilly approach to Scotland. So along this route you have pilot engines which were to help trains get over the route and being light engines themselves and needing to turn around on hilly bleak moors with high winds it can lead to all sorts of problems. The other main problem with this working is the huge amount of locomotive movements and this did lead to the 1910 Hawes Junction disaster

Garsdale has been an unfortunate stretch on the Settle & Carlisle line. They’ve actually had some horrific accidents there. However, the turntable incident is quite a funny one. Because of the lay of the land at Garsdale, if the wind comes from the right direction, the loco on the table is partly sheltered, so the wind constantly blows on one side. So with a perfect balance, it can catch the wind like a sail and just keep going round. The crew initially jumped off and just watched it spin, not knowing how to stop it. For me that’s also pretty funny. Garsdale is basically built into the side of a mountain and fairly close to the top as well. In their position, I’d probably have the same line of thought; how the hell are you supposed to stop it?!
