Percy's Predicament really stuck out to me as a kid, mostly because of the crash which I thoroughly enjoyed as a kid. Thank you for definitely making this episode because up until I watched this, I would have guessed that any accident where a train was rear-ended could have inspired this but I was clearly wrong. Seeing how Percy and Phyllis were both light weight engines, it's sort of no surprise that just enough force would push them up and onto some freight cars.

One of the best on screen crashes in the series. I'm sure many loved recreating this with their Thomas toys when they were younger (I know I did). Funnily enough, while not the inspiration, 2 similar accidents happened in the US. There was a book about train wrecks I used to read when I was younger, and 2 of the pictures showed 2 different accidents very similar to this one. The first picture shows a Pennsylvania railroad 4-4-0 #443 on a gondola, while the tender hangs off. The second shows a Chicago and Alton 4-4-0 #205 this time both engine and tender climbed aboard a gondola loaded with coal. Both results from rear end collisions. I had the episode when I was a kid, and just seeing the real life pictures of similar accidents was just really cool to me (this was before I knew there were real life inspirations). Book for those interested: "Train Wrecks" by Robert C. Reed. Accidents featured on pages 70 and 76 respectively. Edit 12/9/20: Changed the line "happened here in the US" to "happened in the US".

@@dbluepickle40 Yes. It's interesting to know what caused Wilbert and Christopher Awdry to write their stories. Still, I wonder what caused the accident in Bulstrode. And the children's book is Disneyfied because both the trucks and Bulstrode stay alive. I wonder why Chris Awdry got plank trucks to crash into the irritable barge instead of steel hoppers? Would've made the incident more interesting too 'cause Bulstrode might've sunk
@dbluepickle40
@dbluepickle40 3 жыл бұрын
@@evanclarke5561 I think Chris did have a real life inspiration for Bulstode's accident. I think Bulstrode was sinking, but was rescued before he sank fully? I remember him yelling something like "help I'm drowning". In the book Bulstrode survived the trucks did not. I know in the book, it's implied the trucks were scrapped after the accident, as it mentions something about the trucks being sad at loosing some of their friends. Something I thought was odd was in the TV adaption Percy pushes the cars, but in the book they break away and hurtle off the key. I think the book makes a lot more sense. Again while not the inspiration I know of a similar US accident. It occurred on September 11, 1839 on the Camden & Amboy railroad. It was at a boat dock/terminal were passangers going to New York got off and got into a steam ship. Anyway, they were letting 8 passenger cars (the locomotive was detached) roll down an inclined plane ,as they always did,. to met a steamship. Unfortunately, the hand brakes failed (this is before better brake systems came along and the cars careened down the incline and crashed into the steamship. Luckily, the boat didn't sink, and only a dozen passengers were injured. No one was killed.

This actually also happened here in the United States. Most famously one that occurred on the Bangor and Piscataquis Railroad. It involved two trains, one a potato train, and the other a work train. The work train was arranged with a number of flatcars being shoved by the locomotive. The potato train had right and priority, but was running as an extra. While the Work Train was an extra as well. The work train took a siding for a scheduled train. Due to a misunderstanding of their train orders they then rolled out onto the main after the scheduled train cleared, the locomotive shoving the flatcars. This was when the potato train struck it. The impact rode the locomotive of the potato train up onto at least one of the flatcars and ramped her over the locomotive of the work train. There are several other cases and photos can be found of this and other mishaps around the turn of the last century.

There were more wrecks like this, but sadder. In america, there were a few other end on collisions, where one engine would smash into cars that are bring pushed, and climb up to rest on the other locomotive. So, one locomotive on top of another. Sadly, the engineer and fireman did die in one of these accidents but it does look similar to what happened here

When I saw the episode as I got older, I felt very ashamed. This whole situation was Daisy’s fault, not Percy’s. One, Daisy refused to work, like she was supposed to, like pulling a milk tanker, for example. She was also very rude to everyone when she came to Sodor, like Annie, Clarabel, and Henrietta, calling them rubbish. She did try to move a bull, who goes by the name of Champion, off the rails one time, but with only to no success. Champion sniffed her, thus making that the reason why she was afraid of bulls and cows. Because of all that, Toby and Percy were left to do her work as well as their own, with Percy not taking the situation very well. After his accident, I say that the blame goes to Daisy, even tho she did made up for her laziness and stuff.

Classic Thomas was one of those things you could enjoy without knowing what the plot was. It was just fun to watch trains on a real set running and having accidents.

george carlin was a better narrator than ringo starr. plus the only foul beast there is, is season 25

@@ARG0T He may do an all right job however there was no need to have the whole show which was already in English be redubbed. Thats the problem with American Tv from what I can see. No country is allowed to exist in their shows except America unless X episode takes place in Y country. The only part I can understand redubbing is Donald and Douglass because they were supposed to have heavy Scottish accents which could be hard to understand what they are saying

Furthermore, I wonder what the story Bulstrode was based on? And that flatbed behind Toby had 8 wheels while the brake van Percy crushed had only 4. I'm just saying.
