YO THAT 6 STRING BASS IN THE MIX IS CRAZY. I've heard this song ad long as I've been alive and never noticed that mixed in. I've watched the 2003 documentary and listened to 2003 so many times. It's insane how they took pop punk to such a level where almost 20 years later and I'm still noticing new things in the mix.

This is a great example of how to use the studio to make a great sounding yet complex record, which has enough simplicity that it can be recreated decently enough live. Seriously though, the amount of things I didn’t hear in the mix despite having loved this song since I was 16 is unbelievable.

What does it mean to be “mixed under”? Does it mean the volume being lower or adjusting the frequencies?
@SugarpillProd
@SugarpillProd 2 ай бұрын
It's referring to the frequency content of each instrument, and which one is being used for the bulk of the low end in the mix. Because of how low frequencies work, you can really only have one instrument dominate that area, so generally that will be either the kick or bass, and which one that is depends on the arrangement, production and mix.

All your instrumental tips and the demonstrations sound great, but how do the vocals work? That's what I'm wondering. I've had practice and lessons and think im "technically" a much better singer than them (more range, power, can sing live, dont need pitch correction for example), but they sound so much better on the studio records to me tonally, so is there studio magic to consider there, mics, preamp,s interface type, fx causing that "doubles glossy chorus"...or are their voices just better for this genre and i cant quite match that tone? I got some examples of singing onchannel please lemme know. I know I shouldnt aim to sound exactly like X singer but I like to point to them as starting points or something to learn from. It sounds like tom for example isn't just raw, and not just autotune either, there's a whole cocktail of fx or something. When you pull a isolated vocal there's usually a ton of reverb that's not noticeable on the total track, how do that do that for example?
@SugarpillProd
@SugarpillProd 2 ай бұрын
Thanks! So what you're describing there is honestly a lot of different things. Tone-wise it can be to do with how the vocal was captured (as in microphone selection) but this can also be changed in the mix through EQ, saturation and so on. Though for the most part, engineers generally try to capture to most pure, natural vocal sound they can, so that you have more options to work with in the mix. An exception to this would be Tom's vocal during the extended chorus (1:14 in the song) where it sounds like he intentionally sang very far away, possibly in a bathroom or some type of tiled room, to get that roomy, echo sound. Or maybe this was added in post, but he's definitely singing a lot further away from the mic than he does for the verse section. In terms of this song specifically, the vocal arrangement is actually quite simple. Tom is single tracked for each verse, and his vocal is super dry and upfront (as in no delay, reverb, etc). And then Mark's "Feeling This" lines are filtered so they have more of that lo-fi vibe, to contrast with Tom's full frequency vocal. Then for the chorus, Mark is double tracked (which is singing the same exact part twice, then stacking these on top of one another). If you listen to when he sings "smile", you can hear there's a tiny timing discrepancy between the two takes, so you know it's doubled. But a more obvious indication of this is that slightly chorus-y sound you get from stacking two very similar sounds on top of each other. As they're keeping both panned in the middle (so centred) it just gives you a fuller sound, without any phasing issues because they're two separate takes. Then Tom has a harmony line during the 2nd repetition of each chorus, which is again filtered, similar to that of Mark's verse vocal. It's only during the outro where things get more complex, from a tracking perspective. Most of this is just doubles again, so Mark's lead vocal is doubled, and then it sounds like Tom's harmony is also doubled, along with all the additional lines coming in, which you hear once the music fades out at the end. But again, in terms of the arrangement, they're basically just alternating between single and doubled parts, along with filtered sections to contrast with the lead vocal. Something to point out is that a lot of work goes into making a vocal sound "natural" in a mix. Most vocals - especially for this kind of music - are going to be too dynamic to sit in a mix, so they're likely to be tracked with compression on the way, and then smashed with a load more during the mix. You really don't want much dynamics out of a vocal in rock music, because it doesn't allow for the voice to cut through otherwise. It'll just get drowned out by the instrumentation. Then they'll also look to treat the vocal for any harshness (like "s" sounds or mouth clicks) to make it sound pleasant to listen to. I wouldn't worry too much about the "cocktail of fx" as you put it, if you're purely focused on your vocal sound. This is very much a mixing decision, and it's more to do with getting the vocal to sit in a mix. Some mixes will make use of a dry vocal sound, to make it more upfront and in-your-face, like they do here with the verses. But then you may want to add space to these during a denser chorus section, which can be done through various uses of delay and reverb. Having listened to a few of your examples, your voice sounds totally fine, I think a lot of the problem is just down to the treatment of your vocals. They're not very compressed, so they don't feel as though they're really part of the mix, more so just sitting on top of the instrumental, if that makes sense. Your doubles also sound quite loose, and to really benefit from this technique, you need to make sure they're as tight as possible when tracking, and then go in and edit these further after recording. It also sounds like you're using way too many effects, for no real reason. I would suggest not using anything until you're really comfortable with how and when you should apply them. Reverb in particular just kills your vocal sound if it's not well placed, because you're pushing the sound of your voice further into the background the more you add. It sounds decent on your "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" cover, as the instrumental allows for this space, but on something like your "Black Parade" cover, it's just clouding up your voice and washing the vocal sound out of the mix. Sidechaining would be a good thing to learn about here though. If you're unfamiliar, it's a way of ducking the effect every time you sing, but then the sound of the fx you're sidechaining will be brought back up in-between the gaps of your vocal recording. It's generally a much better application of those effects, rather than just slapping a reverb on your voice and having this running throughout. I hope some of that is useful to you!

I find this technically amazing but also disappointing it can never be recreated live without a thousand prerecorded tracks from a computer playing along.

They should keep Matt when Tom comes back just to sing the background vocals at the end of this song. That alone would be worth it.

@@bigballz4u not entirely sure. It would seem a little goofy for him to be saying the guy that wrote the part is playing the part wrong. I hope thats not what he's saying. Maybe it has to do with the incorporation of the fender bass vi.

Mark doesn't play it "wrong" but he has always simplified it live. Because, you know, singing is hard to do while riffing

He technically plays it wrong now. I'd assume it's down to changing it live, and then forgetting how you originally played it in the studio. I've also seen other people say it's because he sings at the same time - though he's only gotta saying "feeling this" a few times, lol. He's said it himself that he'll just go back and learn parts by ear, like he used to when he was growing up, so you could easily miss things like that. Especially this song, where the bass isn't mixed all that loud to begin with.

the title is clear clickbait, but it's a pretty goodbreakdown. i tried to record a cover almost ten years ago (damn, already), and I missed a lot of those details. (that was before having access to the multitracks though)

i think you got it mixed up in the end, for the verse, the kick is mixed OVER the Bass, audibly, and for the chorus vice versa.
@SugarpillProd
@SugarpillProd 2 жыл бұрын
The bass doesn't have the same low end in the verse as it does the chorus though. As it's doubled, there's a lot more low end information in the chorus, plus the kick is only used a few times, where as the verse the bass is a lot busier, so you'd naturally use the kick for the low end, because the bass isn't going to be as consistent.
@SugarpillProd

If you're talking in terms of levels, then yes, then kick is louder in the verse, but I'm talking about frequencies.
@MrMockigton
@MrMockigton 2 жыл бұрын
@@SugarpillProd then your label for "kick" is wrong, since there is no kick frequency - you named two instruments, bass and kick - were you talking about frequencies, it should be "more 100 Hz on the bass in the chorus" doesnt sound as fancy tho, i get why you did it, it is just that the terminology is wrong.
@SugarpillProd
@SugarpillProd 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrMockigton No, that would be incorrect. It wouldn't be 100hz on the bass, as then the bass would still be above the kick. It changes from the verse because the kick in the verse is providing the consistent low end, where as the kick more or less drops out in the chorus, which then allows the bass to take up that lost frequency range. And I don't understand what you mean by no kick frequency. Are you implying it doesn't have a frequency?
@MrMockigton
@MrMockigton 2 жыл бұрын
@@SugarpillProd i think i get what you were trying to say now. your wording is weird and doesnt really help with understanding whats going on in the mix. correct me if im wrong: you mean that the bass has received a boost in the, say 100hz area, whereas the kick is more prominent in the 60-80hz region, which is then swapped for the chorus. that is what you mean by "x mixed over y" - which might be the case, but is not what is happening in the mix here. these drastic results are not achieved by fiddling with the low end - it is more likely a volume envelope or the analog counterpart to that. the bass sound(s) and kick sound also differ drastically, specifically because there is this second bass line that comes in with the chorus and because the kick is more snappy and mid-range-focused in the verse. the main difference here is not which of these instruments sits lower in the mix.
