The pricing on muscle cars kills me. They were originally a working man's car and stayed that way for a few decades. The money they want for them isn't really justified. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love old American muscle, but they're just not worth that kind of money. You could buy a modern muscle car that would run circles around it for half the price. You wouldn't have to worry about rust or restoration too. I'm not trying to shit on them, I really do love em. I miss the days when you could find a solid 2 door, pull a big motor from a station wagon or land yacht, add speed parts, and have a nice ride. As far as building or restoring something, even from the 80s or 90s, don't do it to make a profit, do it for yourself. Make money turning wrenches and let the greedy auction flippers try to ruin our hobby as they empty out 401Ks overspending for nostalgia.

ya it's sounds like he's talking more older classic cars. I would never touch that. if flipping cars wasn't profitable, dealerships wouldn't be around selling cars. it all depends on the deal you get when you buy, making an easier (or harder) sell.

a couple things dealers have going for them that the average Joe doesn't is they usually offer financing, they underpay someone to work on the cars and they sell the cars for 2-3 times what they're actually worth because they sell garbage to those of us with no credit.

I totally agree. This has been my experience. Took 3.5 years to sell a restored '51 MG TD. Dealer in upstate New York offered me $10K. Told him to go pound sand. Finally with the help of a broker, sold the car for $21K. I still lost thousands on that one. Now I cannot sell a restored '29 Model A Ford Phaeton. Just had a dealer in Sacramento offer me $11K. Told him also to go pound sand. This is why so many classic car ads state NO DEALERS! Then there are the other low ballers, the con artists that surf the web and can barely speak English, the brokers, and the listing agents - speaking of which this is why many ads now state NO, I DON'T NEED HELP SELLING MY CAR!! Got started in the hobby in 1975. Man has it ever changed! We used to be able to at least recover the cost of parts if nothing else. Now we cannot even do that. Conversely at the top of the vintage spectrum, the rare high end cars are bringing in 6 and 7 figures whilst we at the bottom with our Depression era Fords or post war British sports cars take it in the financial shorts. I adjusted my life around these money pits for years. No more, I am getting out . But then so are many other Baby Boomers which is saturating the market whilst most Millennials have no interest in our cars. It's the Perfect Storm. What used to be a poor man's hobby has become, depending on where on the spectrum you reside, either a financial boondoggle or an investment medium. I am so Done With This!!!

I disagree with the muscle cars such as the A-bodies. I don’t see them losing value especially with the restomods and protouring builds. The next generation won’t care about matching numbers and if it’s a real SS, GTO, GS, 442. If you upgrade it and give it more power, it’s money into it. The LS Swap culture is growing as well. You also need to be able to do most of the work yourself or partner with someone who has “expensive skills”.

Its got everything to do with the age of the people that owned them in high school or bought them new. Wrong. Plenty of money made on flipping classic cars. He’s talking about buying and restoring classic cars which I agree there is no money to be made unless it is ultra rare and sought after. At that point it’s more of a hobby than a business. Buy and sell with little to no work done when possible. Plenty of people post a car for sale without knowing market value. Also, plenty of people will take less than the asking price when you show up in person with cash.

You can make money if you don't touch the car besides washing. RIchard Rawlings didn't ever sell one car. Every car is on a lot somewhere with Discovery cutting the check. If you notice on progressing seasons, the old builds are in the background. TV magic. People really aren't that stupid, paying 80k for a car that Richard bought for 5k, three weeks before. They can watch the episodes themselves

Sounds to me like you dont know how to run a profitable business. Ive been buying, restoring classic cars for over 20 years. I make a 6 figure income consistently. Its all about buying the right ones at the right price. Also, dont buy basket cases. Buy them as finished and as restored as you can. Doll them up as much as necessary. Then sell it. I bought a 78 Bronco for 5500. Put 800. Into it, a good detail, sold it for 12,500. I just bought an 84 Bronco ll for 1500. Spent 400. On a good detail, swapped a 4 speed to a 5 speed trans (came with the vehicle) sold it for 7500. Even 80’s cars are making me big profits. So, when you say you cant make money flipping cars, you’re clueless.

@@928pcar its not hard if you use what i posted above as a guideline. Also, the better condition the car when you buy it, the less work it needs, the more profit you make. Knowing what makes a car more valuable is where the profit is. Some people go over every nut and bolt and lose their ass. Others clean the car up and make a nice profit.

Guys hes talking about flipping CLASSIC Cars which of course can be a bit harder to flip then your average vehicle. Of course you can make money flipping all kinds of vehicles you just have to know and be an expert in your particular market. I run a used car dealership and sold/moved 39 vehicles last month so obviously there is money in it. I have started out just by flipping 1-2 vehicles a month but eventually went in it full time, even purchasing a 9 car carrier to haul all my cars around. Ive made a video of my little operation on my channel, feel free to check it out. Good luck everybody!

If there was an low cost way to convert (restomod) old combustion cars to electric - would there be money in that? I'm guessing no - but thought I'd throw that out there and see what you think. I know comedian/actor Tim Allen is restomoding an old car to electric - but its for his collection. He's out a heck-uva-lotta money on it too.

I know you made this video based on likely your own experience, Sounds like flipping classics and hot rods is not your nitch, And it is true Not just anybody can do it. But for me I will never do anything else as I make well into the 6 figures and love making my living buying and selling hot rods and muscle cars. Also I disagree with you on buying and selling used equipment. I tryed that years ago and it works out until something major breaks on the equipment while in your hands or next day after selling it. Cars can be pricey to fix at times but equipment repairs can break the bank! just my expericence

The only reason the Ford Model A is still relatively cheap is because it was manufactured from 1928 to 1931 with a total production of right at 5 million. The 28 & 29 were basically these same car while the 30 & 31 were a bit different but all shared quite allot of the same parts. These cars were made all over the world from Russia, Britain, South America, and Australia as well as here in the United States. No other car in history can boast such a feat. These cars were produced so well it's a testament that they are still around and running 90 years after their production. It's the vast numbers that have kept their prices in check. Also having had every part manufactured for them for years now helps as well. They are relatively cheap own and restore if you do the work yourself. You can find them all day long for less than 6k. Now if you buy a basket case and spend 20k having it restored you'll never get that back. These cars will never be as valuable as a 1957 Chevy but then again you'll find more Ford model A's on the road today than any other antique car period. No matter if electric cars start to dominate these classics will always have a place as they have in the past. They will run off virtually any fuel from alcohol to standard low grade gasoline due to Henry Ford's engine design. You may call me crazy but I believe as long as they are drivers antique, classic, and muscle cars will always have a following. They always have and they always will and a person can make money dealing with them if they know what they are doing. One does not have to be at Barrett Jackson to make money on these cars. Matter of fact I believe Barrett Jackson has done more to hurt enthusiasts who love the cars than help the hobby. Just because a car is old doesn't mean it's worth 100k. Here again it's all about knowing the industry just like anything else.

You are exactly correct on flipping cars as the value of most old cars is falling due to no interest in them by new generation - they are gamers, sports freaks or computer geeks for the most part. Not many have Jay Leno's money or resources, either. If you like cars, you should buy the car you want to keep - like the GTO you missed - and don't think of it as an investment. These online auction shows (Mecum/ Barrett Jackson) have made people think any old car is valuable and it is not the case. As a professional mechanic, you know to be sure the customer has or will have the money to build their car ( or make progress payments) so you don't get stuck with their half finished car - I have seen it happen more than once. The idea of buying equipment / machines is also good if you are just starting out and have a place to keep them while you find work for them to pay for them while you own them. Mini excavators and Bobcats can make a lot of money in a short time. Enjoy your videos and like your hard work ethic - keep up the good work.

I worked next-door to a guy who bought vans at auction.Runners with messy bodywork. He had shady pals who worked now and then for a meal and some cash. They did a super-quick sand and fill over the rust and spray-painted them with blue household gloss paint ,thinned with white spirit. I knew they were high-mileage clunkers but they shone.Took em and sold them at the auction place.Never got rich but made enough to keep doing it. Even when you know there's filler and hidden problems a shiny paint job makes it harder to bid scrap value for many folk.

It is best to find the car youd like to restore and do it for yourself. It's an investment but it's also for the joy and nostalgic experience. You may even find that someone wants one and you can then restore another one provided you can get some money out of it. I don't think the combustion engine is going anywhere soon. But we also need people to find interest in these old cars because I believe that interest should continue and grow instead of dying because many people just are not interested in classics.

Hello, I hope you will answer this comment as I’m 7 years late, but do you think doing restoration on your own would be a viable job for someone retired? I used to be a performance mechanic, but I am medically retired and quit because my body couldn’t keep up (mostly due to my arthritis and not being able to take a break throughout the day to make sure I’m not doing damage to my joints). I’m sure if it took me 120-160 hours to do a car, I could get it done in a month or a month and a half, and that would net me like $80-120 per hour of work put into it, but factoring in how long it’ll sit, I’d still avg like 30-50 per hour of time invested
