Do you flush your plants before harvest? What's your reason for doing it? Will you still flush after seeing the information in this video? What they call a flush is what many call leaching. This study proves that the plant doesn't need a feeding for the last two weeks since the mineral content didn't change in flushed vs non-flushed plants. Again, the plant doesn't need any additional nutrients beyond what's in the medium for the final 2 weeks. So if you're feeding your plant nutrients in the last two weeks, then you're over-feeding your plants. Great study! Thank you!!

As a 73 year-old lifelong gardener, I have followed science (mostly peer-reviewed studies) to guide me in terms of my gardening practices. I believe this approach has saved me significant waste in time and money by avoiding the many "myths" in growing my products. I am new to cultivating cannabis and in doing my research as to how to grow this product, I've noticed that there is a dearth of scientific, peer-reviewed tests as to how to optimally grow this product. Almost all information is anecdotal. If there's one thing I've learned in gardening, it's that anecdotal advice is worthless.Yet, contrary to my opinion, there are devout and passionate followers of certain approaches to gardening that simply ignore evidence-based studies on their particular topic. I am familiar with the study that you're discussing in this video. And I agree that this study is "a step in the right direction": that is, home growers need much more evidence-based advice. For me, since I know absolutely nothing about cultivating and harvesting cannabis, I'll follow the conclusions of this particular study. I don't expect that experienced growers will give up their particular methods. If you've been flushing for years and you're happy with the results, why would you change ... that's tough to do. For me, it's easy: I won't bother.

I was curious if you're growing hydroponically. Also with your level of experience, I imagine cannabis cultivation isn't too challenging. Is that true? I ask because my vegetable garden poses the biggest challenges to me. 😥
@priayief4 жыл бұрын
@@dustin2250 I grow my veggies primarily in raised beds. I've found if you keep your methods really simple, it's much easier for figure out why one crop fails in a particular season (sometimes, there's no explanation other than a seasonal variation that a particular crop or strain doesn't like). As for cannabis cultivation, I was given a clone two seasons ago. It was a photo period of unknown strain. I grew outside it in a 7 gal. pot. It grew to about 3 1/2 ft tall. I won't go through all the details but through lack of attention and knowledge, I didn't get very large buds. I was successful in making four clones - two of which I gave away and the two others I grew the following season. The second season (with my clones) wasn't much better than the first - for the same reasons as in the first season. I can say that I had a great success in making my clones. I ignored all the obsessive and over-complicated (in my opinion) advice on the web and simply plunked a few cuttings into some potting soil. The cuttings had been lying around for a few days after my first harvest. I didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised that all four of my cuttings worked. This got me thinking that maybe this cannabis growing thing is simpler than everyone makes it out to be. Probably. As for your vegetable garden: keep it simple. Put about 3 or 4 inches of quality compost on top of your beds at the end of each growing season. Don't bother cultivating. In the spring, plant your seeds and/or seedlings into the compost, cover with a mulch and water only when you think your plants need it - over-watering is the most common mistake. Expect some failures - these happen to even the most successful gardeners. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Hey brother thanks for the videos. I agree with the study on not flushing. I think the overall whole health of the plant during the entire growth cycle should remain strong. I do pruning that reduces the amount of foliage because your follage is just used as storage of nutrients for the plants to use. This way the plants are using the nutrients for building the flowers. Also, I feed every third watering throughout the entire life cycle in order to reduce toxicities and salt buildup. It seems to be a healthy method and my plants respond well.

If you watch the full video, they actually say there were 62 or 64 participants that were involved with the test. So it wasn't just a couple of testers. Your comments are also appreciated as it does seem to make a difference in probable time spent drying and curing for the non flushed plants. Plus costs and time personally spent mixing nuts etc. What I found interesting is that the worst tasting etc samples were the plants only flushed 7 days. So it does make sense that at least 10 to 14 day flush is better than just a week. This is important because sometimes in an outdoor grow ot becomes necessary to cut down sooner rather than later because of ripening. You sometimes don't have 14 days to flush because that plants for reasons of outdoor temperatures and other factors play a role in how fast they ripen. Recently in our area we were having temperatures ranging from the high 80s in the day. ALL the way down to 50 at night. It really spead up the ripening time by a great magnitude. One day your looking at white pistols, the next 50 percent have darkened. Plus trichomes all of a sudden are all milky. So now it's time to make a decision to flush for a couple of days ofr just skip it. The leaves are also turning yellow on there own faster than otherwise would have happened during a flush. It's truly time to cut to save the quality of the medical quality of the plants. Not all but three quarters. Thanks for your time and help.

Hi Mr Growit, love the video. I'm working on a fresh harvest now. Orange velvet underground from ethos OG kush and nutter butter from Humboldt. All my testers taste great. I do drain to waste so hell, I flush every day. Good growing and stay healthy. I plan to run the Golden Goat by Rasta Jeff in my next grow. Maybe I will check out your chillout OG before long. Would love to try it . Cheers and happy growing

When I first started growing I thought flushing was to only give water for last couple weeks. When you see the color of the leaves fade means the buds are taking from the leaves. Take them down. Its always worked for me.

Maybe the changes that occur are only observable once combusted. They should do the same study but test each sample after it’s been burnt or decarboxylated at least.

Thank you for presenting the study. I am with you. They showed why you want to flush. It may not be for yield or "smokers experience". As a vaper, I believe that I can tell the difference. But I definitely would love to get that natural fall look with the leaves yellowing at the end of flower. Small indoor grow in soil with organic nutes. I will keep doing the 14 day flush.

Great thoughts on the chlorophyll leeching during flushing reducing cureing time
@timpage50214 жыл бұрын
That's the precise reason I do flush and been doing it 30 years. I leech the media of nutrients by simply stopping nutrients once the trichomes are all cloudy and give the plants nothing but PH adjusted water for about 10 days. It forces the plant to use up what it has stored furthering the breakdown of chlorophyll. Thsts the fade is the chlorophyll breakdown. I'm glad someone else understood this.. But it amazes me people especially new and novice growers "under 5 years " still think we "flush " the plant by drowning it with insane amount of water. Its simply water to run off enough to slurry test last 10 days or so. There is no reason to give a plant 1500 ppm of feed in last 10 days then again 5 or even 3 days before chop. That's insane. Even nutrient companies that have been around for 40 years like Fox Farms and General Hydroponics recommend flushing and stopping days well before chop.

I finished my first grow including drying and curing in Feb. I didn’t really understand flushing and by the time someone told me I needed to flush, the trichomes we’re telling me it was time to harvest so I didn’t flush. This is obviously a one time thing and strictly anecdotal but my flower had nice terps. The aromas and flavors were great. It’s a smooth smoke and I have to be honest, I was scared I fucked up by not flushing. My anecdotal evidence sides with the study.

Good video. If you are on the final week, or final 3 dry feeds. Use water, silicone and fulvic acids. These aid in the plant uptaking the nutrients left in the medium and in the plant material. Your quality of smoke or the harshness is more down to your curing. Badly dried and cured weed is the final factor. It really shouldnt be called flushing at all. All you are doing at the end is not wasting nutrients and helping the plant on it's way. The flushing you can do during the growth of your plant (especially hydroponics if you have over fed) is stabilising your medium out by flushing a relatively light nutrient solution through the medium until the EC/ppm and ph are both lower and in balance again for the plant to readjust and uptake.

I don’t use any nutrients after week 7 day 49 of flower and just water PH in my DwC 5 gal from day 50 to 70 so I basically just feed water PH for 20 days before cut . It’s basically to trigger the end phase and it cleans the exudates out as every 5 days in switching the water out . The plant will uptake and then exudate and it will be there in the medium when you switch it out over that 20 days it helps produce more and swells the buds IMO triggering the defense mode and making colors , more trichs , swelling up . Hope this helps anyone.

There is nothing at all to flush in a purely organic grow. This usually only applies to salt based feeding
@Санчес-я1т2 жыл бұрын
There is no difference in the final taste of the buds between organic and mineral fertilizers. Since organic matter breaks down into the same salts. This is the same. But organics need time to decay, and mineral fertilizers are ready-made and therefore the plant grows faster and more with them.

I grow all organic roots organic dry ammendments, along with some of the soul synthetics bottles synergistically. Once I get to a good 5% amber trichomes I begin 7 days of "flushing" using the same PH water, and same microbes, the ONLY thing I add to the water besides that is unsulphured molasses. Usually by the end of that 7 days there's very few, hopefully no clear trichomes left. Then after 24 hours of darkness just to get the pot extra dry before the chop. I have personally NOT had any issues with bad smell like cut grass or hay, from too much moisture usually. I truly don't think I'm doing any special secret method, it just works for me and leaves me with some smooth, tasteful, and very sticky buds. Life's good, and I can't complain, thanks for your time. The question I have is “what type of growing medium are they testing?” Cutting all nutrients in hydroponics is much much different than soil. With soil buffering of nutrient they are actually still receiving nutrients vs hydroponics.

I do it for the last 2 weeks or so because I didn't on my first grow (back in the 90s), and the flowers were almost un-smokable. They burned to a crispy black ash and wouldn't stay lit. 100% unburning in a joint or blunt, and had to keep fire on it in a bowl or bong. I was using miracle grow (and that was probably my real problem) but I've done it ever since and never looked back. Plus, since they don't need it, I save a few bucks on nutrients. I've always grown in soil...usually a self built soilless soil. I've taken the water only as long as 3 1/2 weeks and I've never seen any deficiencies during that time over hundreds of harvests.

It was 4 plants in DWC and I did not flush these. I always have flushed for all my grows but this one. Also I am using general hydroponics fertz. These 4 plants after cure are indeed harsh to me and the ash is really dark. Honestly I don't like it and wished I flushed at least least 2 of the 4 for the experiment but I had a lot on hand from last grows. Anyway from here out if am in hydro or coco I will ALWAYS FLUSH LAST TWO WEEKS! The older green I have is about 8 months older than this and is very smooth with light great ash. ✌️

Get yourself a tiny 100x microscope and check out the color of the trichromes! They have some now that attach to your phone, but I like some of the old school hand held ones. See if they are clear, then it's too early. Or milky looking. I like milky with about 10% red heads personally, but if you want the highest % harvest when all milky I believe.

I have always 'flushed' the last couple weeks. 'Flushing' defined by dropping ppm/ec in increments along with decreasing flower room temps/humidity. Removing chlorophyll as you mentioned has always been the objective along with influencing more color in the bud. The amount of nitrogen used in earlier phases of flowering play an important role in 'flushing'. I use to call it 'flushing' many years ago but 'finishing' seems to be more appropriate for what I do. A few final days of total darkness lowering temps even more has also been helpful in a final finish before chop. Thank you for the honest straight forward content. I'm always exploring better ways but mastering the simplicity of fundamentals has yielded a lot of fulfillment for me.

Hey Chris! I’m Chris ✌️! But 💁🏻♀️😎 😊Thanks so much for sharing the study and your perspectives on flushing. I’m about to harvest one of my 6 plants I have (technically one is a clone from one of the accidental toppings from one of the 5 seeded planets I have and I was fortunate to make it root and a clone out of it). 👍🌱 Originally I had grown them in potted coco coir indoors. Then moved them outside as outdoor grows and transferred them into the 5 gal cloth potted plants. However, two of them I decided to plant them in the ground and didn’t really remove the 1 gal coco coir mediums that they were in and mixed them in with organic soil/mulch soil as the remaining medium surrounding it. But kept feeding them all synthetic Botanical nutrients and recently I am flushing one plant for harvest. It was the first 1st I planted in ground. I’ve only flushed it out with lunsulfur molasses and terpenez mixed in RO H2O without any nutrients. Do you think that I should go up to a 7 days or just harvest now? I’ve only flushed twice with the one gal mixture. I’m thinking just not bothering doing anything more with stuff but just add RO water? Cuz like it’s so time consuming to mix all the nutrients or sugars together. 😅🤪🥵😰😵💫 I really appreciate your channel and the support you give to noobs like me. 😜✌️This is my second time home growing (on the fly and learning from different professionals) and I happen to get these seeds from the mother plant I grew back in 2019. I had 6 seeds and all sprouted. 🙌🍀👍Though one of the plants ended up growing all weird, and ended up removing it and had 5 plants left and plus the small clone. Well thanks again for sharing this video! 🙌⚡️❤️🧠🤓😍😘💝🐲🍁🌱

I've heard others define Flushing as running tons of water thru the medium to get the EC ppm way down, like 10 to 20 times pot size in water. and Leaching defined as watering with plain water, the regular amount of water used during normal waterings. I have a feeling the test they did was just normal watering without nutes.
@dawie48533 жыл бұрын
You want as little nutes left in medium as possible. Also only soils and pro mices work for his, not hydro pellets etc. The idea is that unneccesary nutes/unused nutes migrate back into the medium as it becomes depleted with final drybacks, literally sucking out any raw nutes not used (pollutants). Clean meds only

Hi Chris I find that setting up a timeline like one or two weeks for Flushing is just a rough estimate. different cultivars and different size of plants uptake water differently. The types of fertilizer you use also makes a difference. This was a good video, the only problem i have is that there was no mention of health reasons on why a grower should flush. One has to think that what is fed to the plant needs to be flushed so it is not ingested. The flavour comes from the cure process that is with a 58 to 64 percent humidity depending on personal preference for taste. My knowledge is based on experts that teach others how to grow and they all say to flush based strictly on the plant needing to use up any left over nutrients.
