I actually think that Harry's having lots of money served two purposes. 1. Convenient plot device. JK didn't want to have to worry about how Harry would get what he needed for school, etc. She had enough to juggle already, in his story. And 2. Contrast with Ron and the Weasleys. Ron wanted to be able to have new things and hated being poor. Harry's financial wealth makes the point that Ron didn't know how rich he was, to have a large and loving family, which is the thing Harry wanted the most. Remember that on their 17th birthdays Ron got a new watch from the Weasleys, as his family knew his greatest wish was to have something new and of his own, while Harry got an old watch that had been in the family for generations, as what meant most to him was being part of a family.

Getting a "scholarship", loan, or even a gofundme wouldve been easy for Harry. I honestly dont believe money would ever be a problem for him even without family wealth. Since he also then worked for the ministry & technically had a small % of the Weasley twins' successful store because of his "investment" of his TriWiz winnings, I doubt he & his family will use much of that saved wealth. Even if they use some for occasional vacations & such, Ginny & Harry's pasts have taught them what's important so they won't be wasteful & they will teach their kids to be the same. It's going to take many generations to use up all that money, & in the meantime one of Harry's descendants may create another potion or an invention of some kind that then lets them start a very successful business of their own. I mean, potions make no sense given his natural talents. I feel like that is something she would not have missed if she planned for the family to have made their money that way. I feel like she came back to answer that question, and since she liked Lockheart, she decided to give Harry a similar background with the hair care potions.

BMR 3 Harry was never bad at potions it’s pointed out first in order of the Phoenix during their exam that without snape lurking over him he did quite well. He did get an exceeds expectations after all.

When I took an economics class, we were told that one ounce of gold was enough to buy a well made suit, costing £250! A house would cost back in the day about 20 ounces of gold or £5,000. In my lifetime, gold prices have quadrupled in value while clothing prices have relatively stayed the same and housing prices have increased a 100 fold! This means that an ounce of gold is now worth four suits while a house is £500,000! It was said that Harry was left over 720,000 gold talers! This does make him a billionaire. But here's the thing with precious metals, their value goes up and never looses its value. This means it takes fewer talers to pay for things. Therefore, Harry will always be rich while people around him will be poor! This is why our economic system is messed up! Why? People are no longer paid in talers, but currency! This means in the current system you can amass a paper fortune, but not a gold fortune! Harry turned his gold to paper for the Wesleys or used his gold as a retainer! Harry's lucky the brothers were such good business partners! He could have lost 80 gold talers from 720,000!

Harry was also humble about his wealth. In the second book he felt bad that he had so much and the Weasley’s had so little. When he went to gringots he tried to hide how much he had, knowing much of the money for his school. that and the Weasley’s wouldn’t have taken any if offered because they wouldn’t want to be a burden to him, but he was generous and didn’t boast about it either.

I think it’s entirely possible that Harry Potter himself didn’t know about the fortune he inherited until Hagrid took him to gringotts. His parents may have intentionally not told the Dursleys or very many other people about the fortune they had massed so that only a few trusted people knew in order to keep others from getting their greedy hands on it

If that’s all gold in his vault saying each coin is 1 ounce of pure gold he probably had around 1000 pounds, which at that time would be $11625 dollars (USA) per pound. Interesting to note.. both Harry and Tom were orphans with nothing at the time and had bad upbringings, both still chose a different path personality wise in childhood. Good vs evil. Also Harry's lineage didn't waste their wealth.. however toms magical side did.
