The biggest problem is the paywall (and even unavailability for purchase) to access these "new" hitboxes. In the beginning everything was unique but also free (or very cheap in case of the early DLCs). The hitbox consolidation was only good because you never *had* to buy any newly released car to access its hitbox.

I'm 50/50 on this. I've always wanted unique hotboxes to come back. I was very disappointed with the change back then. But at least it completely removed the chance of a pay to win car. If they continue to stick to just hotbox relocations, I think we should be okay. All the relocations so far have been to match the car model. The worry is if they decide to make a completely new hotboxes for a new car that's just bigger in all directions. I would hate hate to see Octane dethroned because of a DLC car that's designed to be better then it. Being owned by Epic doesn't give me confidence..

My guess is if they make anything better than Octane then it will not be on purpose. It will just happen naturally. I feel like they just changed the Ace hitbox to fit that car and didn't even consider nor test it out before release. They didn't think about the narly flicks and mustys . If they bring in a better hitbox that beats the Octane, it will probably just be based of the car design rather than trying to be better.

There's one thing you forgot to mention tho. While most of the very recent car bodies have shifted/adjusted hitboxes, cars like the Diesel and Scorpion remained with the usual standartised hitboxes

Scorpion is so weird. It kinda looks good but it feels so sluggish. I normally use my glorified golden Fennec for casual fun or the retro Primo for its “snappy” feel for sweaty games, but Scorpion just feels… wrong. I don’t know if it’s just the Dominus hitbox or the car itself.

I think it would be interesting if Psyonix held an RL Esport event where the players have to play with a car outside the meta (octane, fennec, dominus, batmobile). Maybe something could catch on and shake the meta some more? Maybe players will specialize in random cars because an event like that would exist? Just something I thought about during the video.

they did, it was an event with the porsche 911 car, it was a 2v2 tournament with pros and content creators and it was won by Firstkiller and JamaicanCoconut

I think the adjustment should be made to many cars. The physics principles in rocket league make it so there's a real trade off of benefits and drawbacks to those adjustments. And like many things in the real world, a hitbox that is a generalist will often be better overall because it's not terrible at any one thing. But mainly, I'm all for the hitboxes matching their appearance more closely. They should make a hitbox specifically for the scarab, that thing is awful.

I see this going three directions depending on how psyonix handles this going forward: either they release a "broken" hitbox like you suggested that breaks out on the pro scene or things stay more or less as they are with players sticking to what they prefer and not spending the money to test every single new hitbox that gets released or, the most interesting option, psyonix updates every single hitbox to bemore accurate (while retaining some kind of standardization) so that each car has at least some unique potential which would open up a lot of possibilities for players of all skill. Specializing in a specific hitbox will be more important than ever.

I would love to have every car match its hitbox perfectly, even if that means going back to 100+ hitboxes in the game. The only change that needs to preceed this is that all cars are available for free. And it would still be a big win for Epic, as people would rush to buy skins for their new personal favorite.

Thanks for sharing this information. I'm glad they're taking it more serious and implementing more accurate "car tools" in the game. Certainly other pros have commented on this. Like JZR documenting miss touches and touches that shouldn't have happened. That's also the reason for toppers not sitting on the car correctly.

I used the primo for a little while and it felt really good. I ultimately went back to fennec, but that may change while I play around at a mid rank and cycle through dominus boxes as well. I assumed primo was breakout and had no clue it was a modified hybrid. Personally I'm a fan of unique hitboxes rolling back in. I'm nowhere near breaking through to higher ranks, and experimenting with different cars is a fun learning experience. Great video, great editing, and very informative. Thanks Wayton

Finally, I have been asking about this but being ignored in the comments or told. Look at the video bro even though their video didn't talk about the CG point. The fact that the CG point remains in the same spot but the hit box moves is huge and can completely change how the care plays. For the Octane, one of the things that has uniquely about its CG. It has the lowest CG relative to the hitbox. Which creates a sweeping motion as the hit box rotates around the CG during spins and dodges. Creating a artificially larger hitbox.

In the video, you focused on the distance between CG and front of hit box which helps with things like musty, 45, 90 deg flicks. On the flip side, a hit box that has been shifted backward will also help other things like standard flicks. With the subtleys that come with this game. It could open up more standard flicks where the back corners are used to strike the ball. Also, a shorter lever, as you called it. Would have a slower motion when rotating. So it could make soft touches during an air dribble easier and more controllable or possible make the car more stable as the nose of the car doesn't get knocked around as much.

11:32 I think it's important to remember, this is a game. Nearly all competitive games manually shake up their META to draw attention and keep people coming back. Compared to actual sports where nothing is changed except maybe a new shoe that has 0.2% better spring to it. Rocket League NEEDS these changes and interesting updates. Sucks they're still so subliminal and silent about them.

Is it right not to consider it a sport at this point? RL is so attractive just because it's no play-once-a-month-and-be-entertained-game, but precisely because you have to put in the hours and get rewarded for honing your skill, not just exploiting the newest patches. I don't generally oppose the trend, but I think Psyonix should be very careful with the speed at which they change the game, because it's great as it is right now.

Just because not everyone is playing at the top level doesn't mean that changes the character of the game. I think that this is the way it should be, it will make skill ceiling even higher and it will be way more fun to watch the pro play too as players will start using different cars rather than the 3 main ones. I have friends who play league and valorant and other competative games and there are constant developer notes, characters getting buffed and nerfed and balance issues being resolved. There is a constant cycle of finding exploits, winning a bunch of games and then having the devs patch it. (this inevitably destroys the traditional gameplay and some regular players have to shift). And then they go looking for a new exploit. Following the meta pays big in these games. I think that phyonix's approach to just standardize everything and to have at least 1 free car in each category was brillant. It might not make as much money tomorrow, but it solidified rocket league as a game that will continue to be competative into the future. If it's all standardized, there is consisency; you can count on it being the same for years. Those who work on core skills will consistently pass those who look for loop holes and exploits. The pro scene will always have the most competative players. This is one of the reasons I've always felt that rocket league is more similar to real sports (soccer or basketball) than any other eSport. While this update isn't a garunteed bad thing, it does leave our beloved game vulnerable to accidental exploits. As wayton was showing, the F1 (an in game purchase) has a lot more power. If your opponent isn't aware of this update they might get surprised at the power coming out of flicks. It's a small thing, but this may be just the beginning. Could it get worse? could we get circle or triangle hit boxes? or maybe wheels that extend past the nose of the car? who know what is now possible....or maybe it will be fine and nobody will care.

i legitimately think the Ace is one of the best cars in the game. the breakout hitbox in general has some unique qualities like its fastest turn radius to it that make it extremely speedy and effective both on and off the ball, but always seemed a little too awkward to actually want to use. with it being shifted backward it fixes a bit of its floppiness and awkwardness. this puts your nose closer in line with the octane's positioning, while still keeping the extra length of the car behind you, which can be surprisingly useful in a lot of situations. and with it being shifted UPWARDS (!!!!) it makes it compete a lot more with the octane on 50/50 situations and can get more controlled touches for ground dribbles in a way that is perfectly in line with what you normally want for high level gameplay. in fact, theres many situations for both 50/50s and dribbles that are simply an improvement over the octane hitbox. ive always liked the flat cars, but there was always something too awkward and unsafe about their ground game and 50/50s. the Ace completely fixes that imo while still having all the qualities you normally want from a flat car. it is now my go-to flat car option for sure. as a bonus, the way it plays is somehow surprisingly close to the octane hitbox so switching between them is pretty easy. ive been able to maintain my octane hitbox playstyle (fennec) while having all the extra advantages of the flat cars, and because of its highest turn radius and other nice qualities for landing smoother, easier zapdashing and walldashing in most cases, theres a noticeable increase in my boost efficiency and positioning as well. this makes it my favorite car for handling neutral situations in the game where neither team really has an advantage. it also makes it very good for some defensive situations and off-the-ball offense as well) theres really only 2 downsides to this car. its still not quite as capable at shooting as large of a variety of effective shots as you can with the octane. its slightly more awkward to use in the air especially, which makes some ideas less effective than you can do with the octane. in effect, you have a bit less freedom to do whatever you want like you can in octane and instead are forced to play towards the Ace's strengths and use ONLY that particular playstyle if you want to be effective. you still absolutely can be effective... you can be extremely effective, its just that you have a reduced amount of options sometimes. and the other downside is that being a long car (and with your length pushed behind you more than normal), you become a bit easier of a demo target. this is still preventable in a large amount of cases without having to do anything crazy like flipping all the way out of your preferred position, but it is definitely something you have to be more careful of, especially for defending air dribble bumps (but it also has some nice ways to use the length to reach around the outside of a bump as well, so it about evens out) also, as a workshop map speedrunner, its the perfect car for a lot of speedruns. again, fastest car type (and a very capable car type for some specific skills like pinches and flicks), but without the awkwardness and floppiness of its extra long nose or being too flat on the ground to perfectly control your touches.

The problem is that shifting the hitbox without moving the center of mass causes HUGE problems - especially for muscle memory. Lightning McQueen has absolutely abysmal flicks and power because the center of mass was too far forward after the hitbox shift. It feels nothing like a Dominus at all, and that’s the main reason that I can’t use it even though I bought the car. If they’re going to shift the hitboxes, the cars still need to feel similar to their original hitbox.

Imo, the whole "standardization" of hitboxes was honestly the WORST decision Psyonix devs could've made to the game. They had no business doing this whatsoever. Every car was unique and viable in some way. Now you only see two cars in RLCS and those same two cars are always given preferential treatment when it comes to cosmetics, payed or free.

funny thing is I thought fennec was more popular car when I first found the car in a reddit clip, I was like: "what is that car I love the looks of it" I was hesitant to switch from octane for muscle memory but when I found out it's octane hitbox I switched immediately even now I love this car if memory serves correct this one of the few that not not only has two exhaust but also it's boost comes from it's tail lights instead of separated space in the midle that is created for every car I saw these two are one of the reasons why I love this car and main reason being ofc octance hitbox, I really wanted DINGO to gain popularity but sadly it did not get that much attention I also the civic type car normal variant specially TW PAINT it's like underglow

I don't think they should be moving the hitbox relative to the center of mass. They should instead move the car body relative to the hitbox to make it match (and rather move the hitbox wheels than the hitbox itself if the wheels need matching).

I'm not sure what you are saying is true. The amount of force is determined by the distance from the center of mass to the outer edge of the hitbox like you said, but longer and lower means you are very likely to hit it on the diagnoal which isn't longer on the new cars and only slightly on the F1,but like with the batmobile, much much harder to hit because it's so skewed from the visual box. A good example is the breakout, I'm sure there's a specific point where you can shoot very powerfully from, but in practice, the dominus has much more powerful shots because the box is the biggest from the center to the farthest point AND because of the shape us humies are way more likely to get a properly powerful shot, vs what is actually possible.

wow i was a freestyler in diamond with about 2.5k hours and i had to stop playing cause my controller broke and its been like 10 months now and i really miss the game

As a beginner that started playing 3 days ago what hitbox do u think I should use the most

Dont the different models have different ball launch angles too? Or is that due to the pivot point you mentioned? Ive used the X-Devil since the beginning, and since i only play once a week i wont be switching because it will take me too long to get used to the physics differences for dribbling etc. I have to imagine pro players are the same in that they want to perfect their techniques, not have to learn new physics, hence they just stick with the octane.

As much as I like the concept of the new unique car hitboxes I'm worried at how hard it will be to make one that is competitively viable while also not just being strictly better than the other cars.
