South Africans are very hung up on race. We were only allowed to bring home coloured or white partners - this is how racist my parents, grand parents, neighbours, community was. When my sister rebelled and married her black love my parents didn’t even attend the wedding! Yet what a wonderful husband and father he is that others look up to him.

This is a sad reality for many, especially non black I've come to learn. In the black community, as much as tribalism may sway opinions of others we still integrate and cross cultures with a lot less push back from family etc. I wish it were just a default setting in humans

I was in a flight with a Dutch man who had just finished his vacation in Joburg. He said he went to a braai with a bunch of Afrikanners who were so excited to see him and talk to him because Dutch and Afrikaans are so similar. He said everything changed when his black wife Joined them . The Afrikaans boys suddenly changed when they saw his wife and they started talking less to him and he really didn’t understand because he thought they would be excited for him since they live in Africa but atmosphere became so tense when the black woman joined the braai.

Lmfao! Typical afrikaners. Yeah they don't take too kindly to us blacks hey😄. The English white south african is much more laid back than the afrikaners. Afrikaners will have the audacity to speak Afrikaans to a young black person and get mad when we ask them to speak English, coz we don't speak Afrikaans like our parents who were forced to do so under apartheid, we the youth born after apartheid speak our native languages and English but afrikaaners are living in the past and expect a black to know Afrikaans and they can't even pronounce the clicks in the xhosa language like the English who can

Shame for me it was white people in Cape Town. A young white guy even stood up and stared at us from all angles, in Stellenbosch a white lady and her daughter stared at us and even asked to take their meal as takeaway. A nice Xhosa gentleman ran out the restaurant and spoke to my boyfriend at the time whose my husband now to say it’s beautiful to witness such. In Cape Town it’s mostly whites who have a problem with us. In Durban everyone from Indian, Coloured, White and Black older men and in Jhb it’s mainly our foreign nationals with a problem. In EC everyone was nice, in Limpopo they asked how to get a white one etc😂

My friend in Sweden reckons (from the SA society in Stockholm) a cord girl from Upington married a Swede and says she’s more used to it, but when her mum visited, she said people are looking everywhere they go. I also had a card GF in London who visited her Polish BF and said people were positively gawking. It happens I think. Most importantly is, as you obviously can, to live through it. I think if people would act self consciously it could actually kill a relationship. (I have an Afrikaans friend who only dates women up to close to 20 years older than him who’s mother was harping on about “all my friends”, he was saying give them my number if they want to ask me something.😜)

I have been in interracial dating almost all of my life. It is surprising that you got a lot of negative from Black people because it is rare to find my people being defeatist about that sort of thing. Yes Black people will stare from curiosity but they rarely utter anything negative. I find that White people are the one's who have a bigger problem seeing and accepting interracial dating. This is something we have discussed with my friends who are also in interracial relations; we noticed that Caucasian families and population are the one's not fully comfortable with the idea.

If you really like eachother it's 100% fine. I find that it's mostly older people that are usually hostile towards these kinds of relationships..stemming from the fact that apartheid ended just 28 years ago..even if it ended 100 years ago it would probably still be similar ..as long as there are ignorant people on this earth racism will never stop. Most of us are brought up in racist environments which cause us to become racist ourselves because as children we watch what other people say and do and it affects us as we get older. It is up to us to raise our children in the correct way.

My parents were amongst the first for interracial relationships in the 'new ZA' but they just happened to fall in love and embraced each other's culture. They taught me both perspectives. People are still judgemental and assuming. I still think there is comfort in finding someone with the same culture, depends community you grew up in since it gives you a frame of reference of what to look for. It's also easier to embrace someone else's identity if you don't have one of your own.

Interesting video. I think the biggest barriers lie in the history of our country. This has brought about superiority and/ inferiority complexes amongst the races. My family was cool about it except that they didn't want to hang much with us because my family was not fluent in English and the boyfriend didn't speak any vernac either, so the language bearer was the issue. On his side, his mum was super cool, maybe because she was also dating a black biker dude (hahahahahahaha), I loved that woman, may her soul rest in beautiful peace. Unfortunately, after his mom passing, he moved overseas, and I was not willing to move there so it had to end. The only problem were the outsiders, more especially white South Africans. The other huge issue about interracial relationships especially here in RSA is language. Dating outside your race or culture means you need to meet each other half way when it comes to language. Speaking English all the time is tiring, you don't even express yourself very well... I've been in an interracial relationship before, and I always preferred everyone speak their own language, home language, but you'll always find yourself gravitating towards English.

But from my side, that he didn’t share in my SAFFA sense of humour. I had a few African from SA GFs over the years and we got each other’s jokes. I've been in two relationships with black men and two relationships with white men, current partner white, going on 4yrs. We definitely get looks, especially when we travel to the more densely white or densely black areas. Coloured people in SA don't look as much at us with that particular facial expression but you do get some curious looks from them. In all my dating life dating people outside my race (Coloured), I only got one comment from an old white man, but everyone else kept their comments to themselves and were kind nevertheless. So, maybe we're making some progress but it doesn't go completely ignored.

The more the races talk crap about eachother, the harder it will be, end of story. Of course you can fall in love, have your perfect interacial love story, it doesn't erase everything going on around it. It is easy to sit there and say, well it's my choice, so is how everyone else chooses to respond to it.

Sometimes people are genuinely confused and then other times people are just out right assholes and pass comments. And then there’s the people that think my husband stole our son because he has a different skin colour and features than his . It’s wild

I believe people should love and be with whoever they want to be with regardless of race or culture. If the person has the values you have prayed for then go for it. Life is too short to worry about what people will think. Most people have ended up marrying people who they don't even love or like just to please others. At the end of the day when u are depressed those people that you are trying to please will be busy enjoying their own lives. Love knows no race or culture if its genuine.

This was exciting to watch, of course people are open to dating outside their races when they're asked versus in reality. Obviously there's a lot where that comes from... If a white person said they're not interested in black women at all, people will be quick to classify that person as "racist", totally overlooking preference... I think interracial relationships can be normal if both partners don't make it weird for each other.

When I was younger I was brought up in a white family till I was in high school then had to go live with my black relatives after then. And dating has always been hard because I was brought up in the white culture yet I'm black so an outsider in both the black and white cultures here in SA. I've honestly just given up on dating because even though I may be attracted to white guys because of my location it's very taboo for white men to date black girls and then when I date black guys then I'm not black enough or they say I'm trying to act white meanwhile I'm just being myself 🤦🏽‍♀️ so now I can't be myself. It's a serious case of code-switching 😪. Dating is an extreme sport

Date middle to upper class black men who are more educated and you won't have this issue, sounds like you're dating black men who are trying to be hood because that's what's promoted via culture(music, movies etc) to represent black people so a lot of people try to conform to fit this narrative sadly.
