In South Africa, as recently as the 1980s, mixed-race marriages were illegal under apartheid. Now couples are allowed to choose who they marry, but different backgrounds can bring challenges. I strongly support mixed marriages, because it improves understanding between communities. Children should learn the mother-tongue of father AND mother in all cases and follow both cultural traditions (I don't think a girl who is only half-Zulu would be barred from participating in the Umkhosi Womhlanga, if she wants and is eligible). I'm in a mixed marriage too - since almost 24 years now. By the way, I've no problem with Lobola. It's nothing like showing respect to the parents of the bride and has nothing at all to do with this horrible Indian dowry-system, which ruins whole families and often leads to violence.

I am from Congo and the traditional marriage is the most important. The court and church will not marry you if you did not do the traditional marriage The bride price is different depends from witch country you are from or tribe you are from. Normally it's just symbolic but people had distorted the real meaning of it. In my tribe the man will give a salt, palm oil, cases if beer and soft drinks. One bottle of liquor, a machete, traditional clothes, shoes and headscarf for the girls mother, a suit shoes for the girls dad and small amount of money(the amount into be discussed between. the 2 family and depends of what the man's family can afford).

You have got it all wrong. Cow term is a currency for Lobola. People use the going currency at the time to determine how much it is. In some families one cow is 900 dollars or if people want to be reasonable depending on the grooms budget they will lower the currency. It could even go down to 300 dollars and lower.
