When George Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney, he didn't sell them everything. He still retains the rights to the OT movies and characters. Also, when Disney uses an OT character in one of its movies, they have to pay George a 25% royalty for doing that. THIS is the reason why Disney is killing off all the OT characters: they don't want to give George his cut of the profits. I think the order to kill off every OT character came straight from the top. Rian Johnson didn't kill Luke on his own but he certainly took a lot of glee in carrying out the order to do it.
@Nate-mq4rh4 жыл бұрын
I actually know where Rian was coming from with that idea, bc by the time of the prequels, the Jedi Order had lost its way so much with all of it's doctrines and dogma's and they couldn't even figure out that their own chancellor of the republic was not only a sith lord, but THE sith lord. They were so loyally blind to the republic that they couldn't possibly make that connection, even when dooku told them about. Also, they had countless opportunities to prevent order 66, with them even discovering the inhibitor chips in the clones. Another thing is that they are equally, if not more responsible for Anakin's turn to the dark side than Sidious himself was. They stole children from families without them having any say about it, that's it hipity hopity your child is our property. The clone wars turned keepers of peace in soldiers and generals in a war that they should've sensed was orchestrated, were taught to act without feelings and emotion (things that no being can effectively do) which ended up being a rule that almost all jedi broke. I mean just look at Qui Gon, he's the perfect example of a true Jedi and what a Jedi should strive to be, whereas Mace Windu essentially represents what Jedi have become. But I do think Rian fucked up in essentially make Luke throw away the chance to bring back the Jedi to what it once was.

Holden Mcgroine Wasn’t that the point the whole time? Subverting the plot? Oh wait, no. Expectations. My bad. But haven’t the plot and expectations evolved into the same thing now...somehow? For example, I always thought the Force was male (maybe because I’m a male and I thought the Force was like practically every country until around like the mid-sixties for some and many countries currently and I thought the Force had a gender to begin with and also thought a description of a gender could be one syllable...my bad). But nope! The Force is female and boy do I feel like a jackass. For the real Star Wars fans both the plot and expectations have been deliberately subverted, ignored and shit on. Some would say “Disneyfied”. They should make a special edition of the Matrix Reloaded but the whole movie is two hours of the scene of Neo fighting infinite Agent Smiths but Agent Smith is non-binary and Neo is played by Cathy Bates. Then, Disney buys star wars and they say they want you to play your iconic role. You agree, work out a lot, lose a lot of weight to get in shape, reunite with your old co-stars and are ready to take your character on a last adventure so to speak. In the first movie, you don't get to do much, but the whole movie just sets up how important you are and everybody wants to see you in the second one. Then, after this build-up you have to deconstruct and disrespect the legacy of your character in a humiliating manner on the big screen and sit next to the idiot responsible for this who is telling people that his movie is brilliant and you are not allowed to openly criticise the movie, so you just sit there and listen to the crap he says. Knowing that millions of fans you care about are going to look at your face in the cinemas and be disappointed must be terrible. No wonder why he looks dead inside :(

@jdl 96 What you’ve identified is what these sequels don’t have: passion You can have all the talented artists, actors, and creators make a film, but it will be a husk without the passion. The prequels are ghastly in terms of dialogue. However, the plot and pacing of the story was put together with love, and we see that when we look at how it fits into the OT. My favorite part is how Anakin is always let down and abandoned. Qui-Jon saves Anakin then dies. His mom says I love you then dies. His wife says I love you, but he kills her. Kenobi says I love you and then abandons him....for Palp to pick up the pieces and to never abandon his prized apprentice. Then, against all odds, he discovers his son who is also a killer pilot and a powerful force user who then abandons him by letting himself fall. But, his son not only comes back, but comes back to join him...by pulling him back to the light. Then, even as he fights his son, gets bested badly, and is getting abandoned by his master...his son stands up to the evil that swayed him all those years ago and does what Anakin couldn’t. Anakin then competes the prophecy by defeating Palp [EDIT] and gives his pure-hearted son the chance to start fresh, separate from the awful corruption that plagued the Old Republic and the old Jedi Order. Anakin brings balance to the force. The sequels ruined this and everybody should realize it by seeing the first 6 movies through this lense.

@Davey Jones Exactly. And by the way Johnson... Solo and Leia were freaking BETRAYED!!! They got sold out!!! How do you just ignore that and say "Han went down without a fight"?? Vader force pulls the blaster from his hand. What exactly was he supposed to do at that point, karate? Not only is Han *not* simply "going down without a fight," he's actually making the bravest choice of all, sacrificing himself so that his friends may live. He does the only thing POSSIBLE to save his friends and give them a chance to survive. How is that going down without a fight? This is a Luke Skywalker who has mastered some aspects of the force, who has traveled to many worlds and learned A LOT about the force, through holocrons etc. He definitely would not choose to attack his student. The switch that was portrayed in the show to Luke's personality would have required something SERIOUSLY BAD happening to him off screen. I w ouldn't mind any of the changes to Luke if they were shown or explained but there was nothing it's as if he didn't know the character. "A New Hope" that name put clearly on display the theme of hope in the original trilogy. To instill a feeling of hope in people, Luke had many optimistic & positive personality characteristics. Whereas in the most recent (in my eyes illegitimate) trilogy Luke was pessimistic and negative thereby instilling a feeling of hopelessness. That means the new 'Luke' was in direct opposition to what that character originally represented for the sole purpose of advancing the plot and enabling a trilogy.

I've always maintained that Rey should have been a Skywalker and had it revealed in the Last Jedi. It's the only scenario that would have justified Luke's actions and behavior... if when he sensed Ben's thoughts he had a vision, of Ben already turned to the dark side, but more importantly of Ben, now Kylo, turning Luke's own daughter to the darkside. That vision is the only thing I could see justifying him even considering to ignite his lightsaber. His love and desire to protect his own daughter, after his wife was killed (by Snoke to add more depth and history to that story arc). He hires someone to take his daughter away, to a location even he doesn't know, to protect her from Snoke, who is obsessed with ending the Skywalker line. Then all these years later, he sees the vision of Kylo turning her to the dark side. Every thing he's done to protect her has failed, maybe his only chance to save her is to sacrifice Ben, here and now... that's the only believable motivation for that scene. And of course, the catch 22, by his own actions and response he ends up driving Ben away for good, leading him down the path to the dark side and fulfilling his vision. The very actions he takes to prevent the events from happening just end up causing them to happen anyway. A self fulfilling prophecy. That would be enough to drastically change his character, to take himself out of the equation. And then, upon learning of her true parentage, learning that her own father not only just abandoned her but had no intention of returning. That he turned his back on her, on his family, ultimately drives her to join Kylo. Family is important to Rey, you don't turn your back on family. Luke lied to her, decieved her, abandoned her, turned his back on her. Kylo did not. The second movie ends with Rey joining Kylo, the future of the resistance and who will rise up to defeat the First Order is unknown. That, would have made a much more compelling second movie. In my own humble opinion.

@Yoda-wf6bu4 жыл бұрын
everywhere cat everywhere cat that’s what he did. He stopped using the force as a weapon. The Jedi wanted him to kill the sith. But he is above that. Why would he seek an apprentice if he’s believes that? So you want him to stop using the force as a weapon but still want to train a force sensitive killer? That doesn’t make sense. Do you want him to struggle with PTSD and being too sick to fight? I wouldn’t imagine the fandom having trouble accepting that. (Sarcastic) Luke Skywalker is a character that has always gone through instincts. That’s our Luke. There must be consequences if he didn’t train soon as a child. When he fought Vader. And when he said that he will make leia turn to the dark side, Luke swoops in from no where without thinking of his action nor consequences and starts swinging at vader. (Another example is when he attacked the emperor after he said his rebel fleet has fell in a trap) That’s why he ignited the lightsaber in Kylo’s bedroom. “By pure instinct I thought I could stop it...it past like fleeting shadow and I. Was left with a shame.” As said the Jedi wanted Luke to kill the sith. But Luke refuses. Just like he does now. “I won’t kill my father”, Kenobi replies “then the emperor has already won.” And his death. Was the most coolest fucking death we’ve ever seen. It really shows how powerful he has become. Watch that scene again. If you don’t get goosebumps then you’re crazy. (Right I’m arguing with a guy lower down in the comments) Would you rather want Luke to be brutally killed by Ben or want another Ben Kenobi sacrifice that we’ve already seen? This is something new and original. Something we’ve only seen one in a Legend Luke comic.

G Ren let me go over this as fairly as possible. Rotten Tomatoes can be influenced by people spamming the site with downvotes, but it can also be spammed by upvotes. You claim this is some big backlash by a vocal minority, but where’s the majority? If the majority were truly moved and satisfied with this movie, why wouldn’t they support it? Your answer here is that the people who like it don’t care as much as the haters, basically saying all the haters are child like and have nothing better to do. That’s not a fair or valid argument, as there is literally no proof of any of this for the Last Jedi. Also, you refuse to acknowledge that the critic score could easily be skewed the other way. You then go on to say that TLJ was a master class in film making, so here’s the question: what was amazing? Rian Johnson can DIRECT fine, but on a writing level the story was all over the place, trying to ignore the past, subvert expectations, use Marvel level humor, and de-rail the entire set up from the first movie, which you refer to as Johnson “gave Abrams a clean slate”. You claim that saying all the build up of a trilogy in the middle part of the movie, leaving NO payoff for the final act, a GOOD THING!? Abrams was creatively bankrupt in Rise of Skywalker, yet ignoring the fact that EVERYTHING he tried to set up was thrown away (Rey’s parents, Snoke, Luke), which just shows that you don’t understand how to build a movie or a trilogy.

Nay, I want it ridiculed out of existence; for it to get so bad, they have to remake 7,8,9 in 10-15 years with cgi Luke Han Leia or just without them and all new characters. Thanks to the Internet, I’m getting my wish, at least in part. I won’t be satisfied until TLJ is utterly eviscerated. Final comment, TLJ will be studied for years to come on what not to do in storytelling, franchise & fanbase management. The use of bathos / meta humor is complete inconsistent being part 8 of a larger story. The utter disregard and disrespect of established characters and canon is only rivaled by M Night’s last airbender and season 8 of game of thrones. TLJ only scores 2/10 for cinematography & John Williams. For my next comment, I’ll write a thesis.
