The original 2 SW films had a hard edge to them, like they were meant to be serious Sci-fi. We kinda got a glimpse of things to come in Return of the Jedi. In the book, Endor was supposed to be filled with wookies, not ewokes. George wanted to appeal to kids, so he changed it. Wookies would have been far more believable.
