The Truth About The Troubled Production of Jurassic Park 3

No production of any Jurassic Park film has been quite as transformative and evolving as that of Jurassic Park 3. Numerous rumours, bits of misinformation and
leaked ideas from interviews have suggested what the original version of the film was supposed to be and how much it differed from the final one we got in July
of 2001. Interestingly, Jurassic Park 3 had a production and film shoot with no clear vision for what the film would be until the movie finally wrapped filming.
The director of the film, Joe Johnston even stated that it was a common joke on the set of the film that the film's wrap would be the gift of a completed script.
The script itself was originally supposed to be worked on with the help of Michael Crichton, but unfortunately he left the project after a few days of unproductivity.
Crichton couldn't come up with any story that followed The Lost World that he deemed satisfactory and worthy to succeed the first two Jurassic Park movies and as such
left it to Steven Spielberg to work on. Spielberg's original plan for Jurassic Park 3 was a story featuring Alan Grant living on one of InGen's islands and
recording research on the living dinosaurs that now inhabited the earth. Johnston described it as "He'd snuck in, after not being allowed in to research the dinosaurs,
and was living in a tree like Robinson Crusoe. But I couldn't imagine this guy wanting to get back on any island that had dinosaurs in it after the first movie."
In my humble opinion, I believe that this would have been a very good follow up to the first two films and seems like something Alan Grant would totally do after his
character development in the first film. But we didn't get to see this story take place.
This is a video that goes into a little detail on the JP3 Rex but mainly talks about why Jurassic Park 3 sucks and as such is not really a Jurassic Park 3 review but more or less just a discussion on Jurassic Park 3 and not wholly the Jurassic Park 3 Spinosaurus or the Spinosaurus Mystery or the Spinosaur Poop we all know about. We mainly discuss the Jurassic Park Site B plot and the Jurassic Park Bird Cage along with the Jurassic World Velociraptor and don't go into detail on the Jurassic World Ankylosaurus or the Jurassic World Indoraptor because they are Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom Dinosaurs and thats more of a Jurassic World Chaos Theory video or as some spell it Jurassic World Chaos Thoery video. Now InGen Site B is not a home for Hybrid Dinosaurs or the commonly misspelled Hybrid Dinosaurus monsters but it is Jurassic Park Site B so we can take refuge in that acknowledgement of the solidarity of these keywords featured within this illiterate mess.

I feel like the original script of Grant sneaking into the island to study the dinosaurs would have been a great movie and a great way to bring to life the expedition from the Lost World novel. i think that it wouldnt have worked that well. i like that grant openly discusses the fact that they arent real dinosaurs and shouldnt be treated as a valid source for research. i do think that the movie wouldve been awesome if perhaps billy wouldve been the one to go do research on the island and then grant, worried of his safety and also trying to convince him not to, ends up there with him.

The script with the mainland killings sounds amazing. It's taken directly from the novel. "Too complex"? Jurassic Park needs to be more complex. Not brain dead boring, but at least more interesting scientific stories. The script sounded more interesting than Jurassic World's rehashed plot.

Jurassic World at least plays around with the central theme of Crichton's novels and the first two films, man's hybris to think he can control nature. JP3 is missing that one completely. It's a fun monster flick but that's that, there's nothing deeper there. And it seems that Fallen Kingdom is once again going to show the dangerous of this hybris.

I like the story involving the killings on the mainland. It's actually a plot device that kicked off the 1st book. In the book, a rich family was vacationing on a beach in Costa Rica when their little girl wandered off and was attacked by Compy's. (This portion of the book was used for the intro of Jurassic Park 2. After the attack, a sample of a dead Compy was sent to scientists which then sent X-rays to Alan Grant. This (and a visit from a lawyer and later a phone call {I believe} from Hammond) is what got Grant to eventually set off with Ellie to Isla Nublar.

S0ulGh0st tell me about it. To be honest it really was a really piss poor decision to separate them because it undermines a big part of the plot of the original Jurassic Park. Ellie wanted to have a child with Allan but he wasn't sure about it. However he bonds with Hammond's grandchildren in the wild after the T-Rex attack and it's implied at the end of JP that Allan was probably okay with having a child. It is basically Ellie's and Allan's character development. By separating them they are like "Those characters didn't grow in the first movie hit the reset button." It's majorly stupid to undermine a previous movie that everyone loves when making a sequel. That should be making a sequel 101. DON'T BURN THE ORIGINAL!!! I think the director of JP3 just had a creepy crush on Laura.

I actually thought for several years it would be great to see a Jurassic Park film start w a crash landing on one of the islands. It would even be made better if it was pouring rain during the sequence. I've been thinking the past couple days about JPIII and I realized that there could've been a different approach to Jurassic World, or JP 4. It's an idea that's been worked on during franchises before, but it could totally work. Think Back To The Future Part II,....... where we're going back to the first film and show it from a different angle, or rather in the case of Jurassic Park, the events of JP 4 could happen at the same time Grant and the Kirby's attempt to rescue Eric. Isla Sorna is large enough to have multiple things going on in multiple different places. The fourth Indiana Jones suffered a similar fate of constantly coming up w different ideas for the script. I think a lot of people would probably agree that there should've been more going on in the third Jurassic Park movie. my biggest beef on the subject was that the franchise came out w two movies just over two hours, and then the third one comes in at an hour and a half, really?? If I was the director, I would have called it between an hour and forty-five and an hour and fifty. So much of the film was left on the cutting room floor.

@@lonellfletcher imo, they changed the plot of the book and made Ellie older to make it more plausible that Ellie and Grant were a couple. Also, to create that duality between them about the kids. In the book Grant loves kids because they usually share his passion for dinosaurs. It would be a neat little touch for Fallen Kingdom to reveal that Billy was secretly working for InGen. Just have Wu mention his name to someone, or have it as an Easter egg. Maybe a memo on Wu’s desk.

They could have made at least two more good Jurassic Park movies before doing what we know today as JP3. And the investigation on dinosaurs in the mainland could be a good ending to the first part of the franchise. And naturally with Jurassic World as a refresh of the franchise that instead of being about dinosaurs becomes about the power of science and the moral issues that are now being deal with in the JW's sequels.

There actually is a young adult novel called "Jurassic Park Adventures: Prey" that features almost the exact plot of the original script. Grant goes back to Isla Sorna sometime after JP3 to study the dinosaurs. At the same time, a group of young film students secretly land on the island to make a dinosaur documentary, and Grant ends up having to save them.

A lot of people are disappointed with it, but don't forget there's 20 years age difference between the two actors it would have caused a fair bit of negative flak. Also, I don't know if you've ever read the original novel or not but Ellie is actually Grants student, not partner. so in hindsight they were never meant to be in a relationship to begin with.

Having read the original Novel...I can almost guarantee that unfinished script by Speilberg would be EXACTLY what Alan Grant was doing. While Grant from the Novel and Grant from the Movie are different in subtle ways, at their cores, they are still the same character. Grant wasn't jaded or even traumatized by what he experienced in Jurassic Park - and the Novel had him dodging death many more times than the movie did. He didn't suddenly start hating Dinosaurs because they had tried to eat him; he remembered that they were just animals behaving according to their own instinct. Hell, after the Climax is resolved in the Novel, Grant is adamant to start doing research on the Dinosaurs, to the point where he goes right into a Raptor nest just to count the egg-shells. My point is; Grant really would've been the person who would want to study Dinosaur behavior first-hand - and I really do see a movie in the franchise exploring this idea. He didn't even have to be the main character of the story; he could've been the character that they find on the island.

I totally agree! In a future film I would prefer if instead of attempting to set up his character to just show him there amongst the animals. The audience knows whats up

I don't really like the idea of Alan living on the island. It''s just kind of over the top. However the original script with Alan and Billy investigating the deaths on the mainland sounds actually pretty awesome. It would have fixed a lot of the problems the 3rd movie had with no explanation of Alan and Ellie's relationship ending and the movie's rushed feeling to it. I do like what they were trying to do with the "Alan!" scene, showing he has some fear and reluctance to return to a Dino island, but they could have made it a bigger part of the plot. However, I do enjoy the 3rd movie as it turned out. Sure it has problems, but it was a good fun adventure. I think what Joe Johnston was trying to do was not make another Lost World. Think about it, this movie is entirely opposite from The Lost World: Alan and Ellie are the only returning characters from JP1 (which they were both absent from TLW), InGen was not involved at all (They had a big plot presence in TLW), A much smaller cast TLW had a bigger cast than the first) , no human Antagonist (which Peter Ludlow portrayed not-so-subtly) and Raptor's acting like real animals caring for their young (and not monster's like they were portrayed as in JP1 and TLW) and no complex Chaos system to look into (which JP1 and TLW had, and probably why they never put Ian Malcolm in the story). The first 2 sequels obviously aren't on the same level with the first, but I always viewed Jurassic Park 3 and The Lost World as two sides of the same coin.

Klayton Fioriti How would you had done JP3. As in what would you had made the movie about? I would have had the movie dealing with paleontologist (Lead by Alan Grant and the Kurbies) studying the Dinosaurs on Isla Soria (Like in the Lost World) to find out Ingene was experiencing on Dinosaurs fusing them together (Like in Chaus Effect.) A mutation of a T-Rex and Spinosaurus breaks out and runs a muck on the Island killing people and Dinosaurs. It would be up to the military and the remaining survivors to help the Dinosaurs and destroy the Spinosaurus creature. In the end, the T-Rex (the baby T-Rex from The Lost World now all grown up) fights off the Spinosaurus creature killing it. So bassicly, Jurassic World. But, back in the day. And Fallen Kingdom would had been the 4th film. I hope you found my idea introsting.

Love your videos man. I've been hardcore into JP since the first film came out. I read the book as soon as it was available at the library (I put myself on a reserve list) and got my own paperback just after, that I've had for 28 years. I'm halfway through reading that same paperback to my 8 year old son at bedtime. It's something I always come back to. I love the movies, but the two books are even more special to me. I think of Jurassic Park as a book series with great movies made out of it rather than as movies first. The book of the Lost World is incredible.

It would have been cool if they progressed the story of JP3 more involving science again, like the first JP. They could have made it about Allen Grant still, but instead of a typical rescue mission, it's Allen getting kidnapped by a another rival company of Ingens posing as a private mercenary rescue team sent out to rescue a group of tourists that were caught in a tropical storm which was veered off their original tour course and got them lost and crashed onto the island by mistake. The mercenaries and Allen then would have met up with these people and worked together to survive at first, then later it could have been revealed by the mercenary group to Allen and the remaining survivors of the tour group that they kidnapped Allen Grant to gain access and information about the islands' dinosaurs and that the rescue mission was just an excuse to gain access to the island. It is also revealed that their company once worked with Ingen to help provide them with some of the technology to help make Jurassic Park a reality years ago before the events of the first JP, though John Hammond had disagreements with their companies' director at the time about the direction and future of the park before it opened to the public, which led to Ingen and this company to part ways before the events of the first JP leaving Ingen to take all the credit for themselves, which is why in the first JP no mention of the other companies' name was placed on any of the products or talked about during the events of the first JP. They then explain their real reason for going to the island is because their company had found out that during Ingens' process of recreating the dinosaurs, one of the concerns the company's scientists had was the unknown consequences of not only bringing back extinct animals, but also, possibly bringing back any unknown viruses from that time period. Ingen wasn't hearing any of it of course, and went ahead with the dna manipulation that ended up creating the dinosaurs, however failing to realize that the dinosaurs would eventually evolve to a point where they began to carry old diseases and possibly was the reason behind why dinosaurs and most living things died off all those years ago. Their tasks then could have changed from survival to reluctantly helping the mercenaries find critical areas of the island to set explosives that were created specifically to only target the dinosaurs with some type of airborne chemical that would have caused a chain reaction which would eventually destroy the islands' inhabitants before the virus the dinosaurs had could spread out to other parts of the world, then get off the island before the explosives went off. To me this would have made a more epic JP3 with much higher stakes, more information about Ingen and their shady work, as well as begin debates on the potential dangers of manipulating nature without knowledge of the consequences much like they discussed in the first JP.

JP3 is a bit of a mess but doesn’t deserve the hate it receives, although trying to usurp the T. rex as the biggest and baddest dino in the series was a mistake. Although that said if the spino had been a T. rex everyone would have just complained about it being yet another Death Star or xenomorph out the airlock moment and hated it for that instead.

I re-watched the three Jurassic Park movies in the last three days and I enjoyed the dinosaurs in JP3 the most. You can clearly see that they had better 3D technology for this later movie. While the animals looked really bad when they were 3d rendered in the first two movies, here I really liked them. And my favourite part is the sound of the Spinosaurus. It sounds somewhat like an engine of a sportscar, but I think it is incredible terrifiying and well done!
