Tim, I appreciate your videos but let’s be honest. A F150, XLT, which you said is affordable, is priced above $60,000 that is not affordable for the average American family. You know it, we as Americans know it, and Ford knows it. They are pricing themselves out of the market.
@Pickuptrucktalk
@Pickuptrucktalk Жыл бұрын
I’m saying there is a big price gap in the market. There are still base level trucks and now there are really high end trucks. That throws the statistics way off when it comes to average transaction price. Are trucks affordable for the middle class? Honestly, that’s a really hard question to answer. I know lots of my neighbors who buy new trucks and they are middle class. They have managed their money quite well, put down a sizable deposit and only buy a new truck once or twice in their lives. Others look at the payment and figure out how to make it fit into their budget regardless of the overall price. Frankly, it is hard for me to judge people and their buying decisions. That’s on them. I report the facts and the sales numbers show Ford is selling lots of new trucks and SUVs.

You know things are not going well when Ford puts out a Cheerleading email like this to the media and influencers. Mark Twain wrote there are lies, damn lies and statistics. You are right, Ford trucks are not only not affordable and Dealers have exasperated the problem. They have been losing tons of money on warranty claims due to defective vehicles as well. Behind all those wonderful numbers is a dumpster fire.

When I was shopping for my truck, the Toyota dealership had 6 Tundras and Ford dealership had over 50 F150 variants. It was a sea of new trucks. I couldn’t believe truck after truck was 80, 85, or $90k+. I thought at the time “who is buying these things??!” A few month later I’m learning nobody is. That’s why there’s a sea of them.

Tim, I think it’s a double edge sword. Just because sales numbers are up doesn’t mean they are not overpriced. The debt people are taking out is to buy them is putting them into a financial headlock. People in general are going into the worst debt year over year. Price of trucks have gone up exponentially. The same at4 from 2019 to today is up 25%. That’s 10% over inflation rate. Yes you have technology advance to raise costs but they should also be finding ore efficient ways to build to help build it and save money. I have learned through my years just because you can doesn’t mean you should. I feel that they are getting a little greedy on the prices and margins but if some people will pay it and over leverage themselves they can do that. They just might have it backfire on them.

I grew up in a middle class family and my dad was a blue collar worker who made $5/hour. Did we buy new cars? Yes. Did we buy top of the line cars? No. My parents bought what they could afford in relationship with house, food, education payments. My recommendation is buy what you can reasonably afford. If you can’t afford a new vehicle buy used. I didn’t buy a new car until I was 30 because I simply couldn’t afford one.

I listened to this, sounds like Ford is actually down in sales and want to put a spin on it so that people don't haggle over the price of the vehicles so that the dealerships can sell the vehicles in my opinion at an inflated price. But like home sales it's a buyers market and not a sellers market.

Oh it is a buyers market unless you need to finance right now. Anything over $50k in my area is just sitting doesn’t matter if it’s Ford, Chevy, Ram, or Toyota. Sounds like you're making excuses for inflated prices, intended shortages. Also, you're comparing a bunch of numbers of record awful sales, then claiming their sales are up, that's not being transparent. I can understand why a guy who makes a living on the auto industry is essentially the only one who is claiming there's nothing wrong with the industry. I typically agree with you on most things, but this video changed my perspective on your channel. You're basically saying the middle class should stop whining and try to find a base model truck they can afford. Why? We didn't have this problem until the last few years....
@Pickuptrucktalk

I think 2022 vs 2023 is pretty comparable. Now if I was comparing 2019 to 2020 then I wouldn't bother. You probably don't know this but I actually stopped reporting on sales figures for a few years. Am I saying trucks are cheap and people should stop whining? Oh hell no. I'm saying a few dealers did some shitty things. And trucks have a wide spread in prices. Do I think truck pricing is crazy? Yup. Are people buying trucks? Yup in mass. I have no right to question their buying reasons and I wouldn't judge them for it. That's their business. The point is Ford is selling trucks just as fast as they can build them and they have a lot of demand like all automakers. People are buying new trucks and higher and higher price points. The average transaction of a new truck keeps going higher. That's just the market. IF people would stop buying the really expensive trucks, prices would come down. They aren't, so prices keep going up. That's basic Capitalism at work.

A friend had bought a 2022 F 150 XL last year for 55000.00 ( this is in Canada ), and pricing out the very same optioned vehicle now which is a 2023 model year is at 75000.00, its become absolutely insane. Used vehicles are demanding high prices, interest rates are far higher then the low ball rates they were so its become not even affordable for a lot of people to even buy a used vehicle unless its a worn out pile of rubble that should be destined for the scrap yard ( rust is what takes out a lot of vehicles here )

Yes the pandemic has been going on a few years now but these sales increases are as a result of significant improvement in parts availability and Ford producing more cars/trucks as compared to a couple of years ago. Last couple of years sales were significantly more depressed due to shortages than what we are seeing in recent months. Also, Ford is having significant quality challenges - something that the CEO has eluded to publicly.

Ford Transit…guys at work absolutely HATE them. Ford Maverick…could be in the running for most marked up (by % of MSRP) of any vehicle out there. You will not find one on the lot at msrp. Definitely not near $20K unless you ordered it. Lightning was on sales hold for a while for battery problems, not sure if that’s been fixed or not. When they were for sale, the absurd markups AND $10k increase over original msrp in the past 6 -8 months or so has stopped any idea I had of buying one. Did your Ford contact happen to mention the average transaction price for F-series last month…around $68K. People NEED to stop paying these ridiculous prices for these trucks. GM had stated they were stopping truck production because of too much inventory on dealer lots….Which translates to lower inventory means more $$$$ for them. I suspect it’s associated with the changeover to the new model year, but that’s not how it was reported.

Fantastic video. I'm finding that many buyers are purchasing more vehicle than their budget allows. When a dealer adds a markup. No one is holding a gun on the buyer to complete the transaction. Im my case. I simply get up and leave because I'm not interested in paying over MSRP. These add on prices don't only apply to Ford, but all manufacturers. I'm still amazed that a customer will pay a $50,000 markup for a, Z06, or over $200,000 for a Dodge Final edition Challenger. Unless you have a big bank account. Think about the monthly payment, insurance and maybe consider a vehicle in lower price range.

Ford may be making more sales(a lot of that due to incentives returning as well as easing of loan terms), but they have some serious quality controls issues that will be major issues in coming months and years. Tim, thanks again for the assessment and for stirring the pot again. Truck prices and oil change discussions will get you in hot water every time, no matter how many facts are laid on the table. 😉 For transparancy, I purchased a 2022 Tundra 1794 Edition 4x4 last June. I still have a 2003 Tundra SR5 Sport v8 4x4 that I purchased new in February 2003. That 2003 cost me $26,400 after a dealer discount at that time. The new 2023 cost me just under $65,000 (@MSRP at the time). Are these the same truck? Not even close. Is a 2023 SR5 4x4 (non-TRD) even a close comparison to a 2003 SR5? Nope. That 2003 Tundra adjusted for infation alone would cost me nearly $43,000 today. In 2022 the average cost of a full size pickup truck was about $41,200. A number of things have happened over the years since that 2003 truck. 1) The consumer has changed. In 2003 very few people purchased a "crew cab" truck. Now some manufactures don't even offer a two door pickup. 2) Then, add on all of the safety features that have become standard in most trims. Every couple of years another technology becomes standard equipment. (You can thank Consumer Reports and other advocacy groups for these, including the cost.) 3) More standard features and more desirable features are available that are bundled in ways that unnecessarily increase the cost. 4) Then, adjust prices for inflation. If you were to add all of today's features and some options onto that 2003 truck, figuratively speaking, you would have a roughly $55,000 truck. Add on a healthy profit for the dealer and manufacturer, and ta-da, you have a $60,000 truck. Manufacturers' sales have continued to increase, pandemic notwithstanding, that means that enough people are buying their products, thus justifying the pricing. When enough people say no thanks, this will change, but not until then. There is an old economic adage 'that which can't continue, won't'. There are a lot of economic headwinds building that are likely to slow big ticket sales this year into next. It will be interesting to see what automakers do as these are realized.

Agreed, the doom and gloom for dealers and manufacturers is hype. When I look at the 2020 F-150 Lariat I purchased in April of 2020 a comparably equipped Lariat is easily a $12k ( probably higher ) MSRP. Even if you can justify the increase what’s not available at this point is the $7k discount/rebates. My take is Manufacturers like the current environment and will keep demand in place as long as possible to protect the larger margins they are now making without rebates and dealer discounts. 5:29

A quick check with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator shows that $2900 in 1969 is worth $23,013.08 as of January 2023. Another quick check of Ford's website shows that an absolute base-model short cab, 2WD WT F-150 starts at $33,695. That's a rather large gap. Throwing this in reverse, a top-model Limited F150 is $84,910. Taking a time machine back to 1969 that's $10,699.96. I can't find a single record of a truck costing anywhere near that in 1969. I can tell you that in 1969 a Porsche 911S Coupe went for $8370, which is significantly less (when adjusted for inflation) than a Ford Fricking Pickup Truck sells for now in top trim.

@@ericarntson2035 Based on your figures, a $33,695 truck today would have been about $4,250 in 1969 dollars. Seems a bargain considering all the convenience & safery features it has as standard equipment missing from a 1969 base model. I remember my father's new 1966 Caprice. Had small V8 with powergide, no air, no cruise, manual brakes, crank windows, AM radio, and skinny bias tires, yet a sticker price over $4,000. As far as backing the price of a fully loaded new Limited to 1969, there was absolutely no truck available in 1969 that came within having even 1/4 of the features of that ridiculous land yacht, so no price comparison is possible. I think it we adjust for inflation many of today's prices on things back to the 60's, we would see we aren't so bad off today. For fun, try that with today's televisions.

Us ICE consumers don't realize when you purchase a new ICE vehicle, you're propping the EV market. With Covid-19 and big push to all EV's, we ICE folks are paying the price. GM is currently investing billions on EVs. This year, the Detroit automaker expects its capital spending to total between $11 billion and $13 billion, which is up the $9 billion to $10 billion it previously expected to spend this year. Much of that is earmarked for EVs. GM is now expected to spend more than the $35 billion it previously said it would spend on EVs and AVs starting in 2020 through 2025.

I see what your saying about the upper vehicles are messing with the average. The problem is the base cars are not available. And even those have price mark ups put on them. Because they know they won’t make money on them, base model cars are often not available or there will be a huge wait on them because they are the last to be built. You can’t get a base model and certainly not for base price. And it’s not because they have to be so expensive. The dealers have gotten used to making profit from a plague and they still want to. For the average middle class family the extra 2000 plus for the base models of cars is too much. Try getting a mid size anywhere near 30,000 now. If you have kids you can’t go much smaller and that means your screwed

I think the video thumbnail claiming new cars are going to destroy the economy is probably pretty correct. Everyone who bought a new truck in the last 3 years probably has a payment over $1,000. And that's not even for a nice truck. One little hiccup in the economy and everyone's going to start defaulting on their loans. And all signs are pointing to things really slowing down for a few years. Tech company layoffs, bank failures, etc. Its only a matter of time before it hits regular people and all this debt they have accumulated over the last 3 years is going to crush them.

We still think the dollar has value, which it doesn't. Gold was $270 in 2000. Today it takes nearly $1900 for the same 1oz of gold. 7.037 times as much money! A $100,000 boat / by 7.037 = $14,210 in year 2000 dollars, which is about right.$4.00 gas is cheaper than it was in 2000! 4/7.037= 56.8c/gallon in 2000 dollars. Gas in 2000 was much more expensive! $1,60/gallon Your electric bill is much cheaper now! The number of dollars shows the money is worthless!

A quick look at YTD changes in car sales ending in Dec 2022 showed a decrease in sales for all major mfgs except for Tesla. Most economic forecast for this year predict a declining outlook with inflation still increasing at a significant rate. When the chip shortage affected supply the marketing model changed to a larger profit margin on fewer units. As supply increases I do not see this continuing. Also used car sales are tanking and credit is becoming an increasing concern.

Tim, very well said. Are things more expensive, yes. Welcome to inflation year over year. Also, 5 years ago a base model vehicle came with roll up windows and manual transmissions. Nobody bought them and always wanted to upgrade to power windows, door locks, auto trans, and more which naturally raised the price as well as those vehicles aren’t even offered anymore. It’s evolution of industry demands. Happens in everything technology wise. I don’t hear the same people complaining about a $1400 iPhone that was $350 5-7 years ago.

@@PlayWaves1 It's not a matter of covering up anything as there have been pend up potential sales due to a lack of vehicles being available at dealers lots or being built on time for orders and now those sales are happening, its what the picture will look like in the future and could be fairly near future as per where things are headed with the economy and I fully expect a far more expanded war .. its coming. Having said that I know locally in the main city of this part of Alberta for example where they sell a lot of Super Duty trucks, for the last while neither dealer had ONE pickup of that type on their lot and now between the two dealerships there is a grand total of 3 trucks. That is extremely odd because there is a massive amount of ford Super Duty trucks that the oilfield and forestry companies use and be it buying them or leasing them and rotating through to new ones every couple of years is what some companies do. Each dealer has some F 150's but not the number they would typically have.

Keep in mind Ford is playing with these numbers. They say "sales are up 100%" without telling you they are counting 0 sales in the previous period because it's a new model. If Ford was doing half as well as this PR piece suggests, I guarantee their stock value would be up. As of this moment, it's at $11.72/share. They are heavy on debt and have too many warranty issues. "Growing pains" for a 100 year old auto maker who has not figured out how to release new models are not exactly encouraging.

At this point, whether you're talking Ford or any other manufacturer, I don't think it's conspiratorial to say supply is being purposefully reduced to inflate pricing. I wanted a Toyota Tundra. Was told yesterday it'd be 9 to 18 months before I could get one. By that time we're into 2024 models. ... I understand supply chain issues still exist. But it's no longer an excuse. People like me are simply leaving the market and sticking with our old, beat up vehicles. We'll see what the future holds.

I agree the sensationalist clickbait videos don't equate to reality. That being said i do think the ever higher prices will affect sales. I think owners who were so used to trading up to the shiny new truck every 2-3 years will begin to hold off. I use myself as an example. I got that itch to buy something new every 2-3 years. Heck i bought my 2022 Ram Built to Serve edition a year and half after buying a new 2019 Silverado. Reason i pulled the trigger was of course the Ram caught my eye but also i was right side up in the Silverado and the dealership/manufacturer was offering significant incentives on the Rams. Currently inventive are there but way lower. Prices conversely are considerably higher. If those two trends continue people who may have had the itch to trade up will in all likelihood hold off. I know I am. My current truck i am growing more comfortable with paying off and keeping. That would have been unthinkable prior to this. Also Americans like to have their cake and eat it too. Many people won't want to settle for a base truck and without at least incentives coming back in large amounts they will have less reason to pull the trigger on a new ride.

I don't buy it, Tim. Prices of trucks and SUVs are ridiculously high. Everybody knows it. Simply put, there are not enough wealthy people willing to overpay for Silverados and F150s. And all the dumb people who make a median income and spend $65k+ in a truck will go broke sooner rather than later. GM, Ford, and Stellantis didn't do the math right. By jacking up prices, they have significantly shrunk demand for their product. This trick worked for a while (especially with super low interest rates), but eventually, their market will dry up. This is not sensationalism, it's microeconomics 101. Check out what industry analysts are saying. Pay less attention to eager KZbinrs.
