The TRUTH Behind The Falcons Drafting Him

It's probably crossed your mind on why the Falcons would waste a high value draft pick for a Quarterback when they just signed a really, really good one in Kirk Cousins.
However, The Falcons had very good reasons for Drafting Penix. Today we take a look at several points as to why the Falcons selected Penix in the first round in the 2024 NFL draft.

I actually. Like this pic because it secures their future at quarterback so they won't have to trade picks in the future.And I think in practice he will actually look better than kirk. That division is wide open to be won. Penix could arguably be the best quarterback in dis draft

Yeah I like the pick too. I get they could have gotten another blue chip guy, but if they think Penix is a top prospect and there is no guarantee with Cousins being good for the next 4 years, draft the guy then. Especially when the Falcons are not going to be picking high for some time now.

I like it for three reasons. 1) Green Bay drafted the QB of the future twice to sit. Looks like it’s working out well. 2) I forget who it was. Either the former coach or GM of the Steelers from the 4 Super Bowl dynasty had the chance to take Marino. They didn’t bc they had Bradshaw and they said they regretted it ever since. They said when you get a chance to get what you think is a generational talent, you take it. Thats called a good problem to have. 3) this is an insurance policy, everyone has the underlying assumption Kirk won’t get hurt again and or will be the exact same player, maybe yes or maybe no. Drew Bree’s and Dante Culpepper were both famously coming off injuries as free agents. Brees with a shoulder and Dante with the ankle. The dolphins got Dante bc they thought the ankle would easier for a QB to bounce back from. How did that work out? You never know how a player will return after an injury. cases: 1) kirk comes back and wins several superbowls and has a Brady like longevity. If that’s the case, you trade the new guy for more capital or a a new pick to get a new QB to groom. 2) kirk sucks or gets injured. Drop new guy in. 3) they both suck and none of it matters anyways. 4) Kirk gives you a few good years and maybe wins the big game, rides off into the sunset in new guy takes over in the Rodgers and Love mold. I think this was a solid pick assuming they feel strongly and Penix as a talent.

Astounding how stupid this all is, eh? Everyone is thinking "you don't draft the replacement of the guy you just gave guaranteed $ to" but think that somehow getting the highly-touted _prospect_ is the wrong move, not the throwing away of way too much guaranteed $ to the injured aging never was a star QB. Let's remove Cousins from all things. Heinicke is their only QB. Since that's also the case if/when Kirk can't play for _any reason,_ then in what way is the pick of Penix wrong or bad? It never was. The Cousins contract is the mistake. At his best he is sub-Lamar. They're not getting him in his prime. _And_ it cost them a draft pick.

Agreed. Although I push back on Cousins is basically toast. I think for the guarantees he is getting is a little below top pay. Because think burrow is 55 million, Lawrence is now 55, and there is talks of Dak wanting 60 million a year. I think given the weapons the falcons have and new oc. I think Cousins will be in the best situation he has ever been. That’s saying the o line is just as good as it was with Arthur smith and pitts, London and Mooney play where their drafted potential is. Cousins should cook if he doesn’t fall off. Just being propped up by the offensive talent. Still, drafting Penix given the prospect he was, is not bad at all, given how it could go down hill with cousins.

I would say there is a lot hope for the Falcons. I wouldn’t be surprised if you guys win some Superbowls in the next few years. I really like Zach Robinson and Raheem Morris. Both are extremely talented, proven and talked highly about by other NFL coaches. The talent on offense is immense. The defense is the question. And I am a Kirky fan
