It's child abuse. You should 100% NOT EVER LET your child get burned, you should rpevent it as much as you can and if they get burned then they will learn> DO NOT stand by and let it happen. That' is abusing your child, you're supposed to keep your child safe from harm. NOT LET them get hurt to teach them a lesson. If you saw your kid climb onto the counter are you gonna stand back and say "If she cracks her head on the ground....she'll learn" NO you run over and sternly tell them they were bad and remove them from it. ALSO why is your child alone in the kitchen or in the kitchen at all when you're cooking????? sounds like abuse waiting to happen.

@@bookworm3756 Yeah, same, I got very superficially hurt burning myself once in the kitchen, cutting myself once in the kitchen, and then never again (until I was an overconfident teenager), because I had *LEARNED* to be cautious in the kitchen and my dad's workshop. There are no physical or emotional scars and I loved helping my parents. I don't know if my mom let it happen or if I got past her, but she was very much on the ball as a parent so ... probably. I agree with this method, you *literally* can't watch and protect children every second, so if they don't thoroughly understand the dangers of the world - say by learning from a tiny, superficial, supervised and cared-for injury - they could seriously wreck themselves in a big, serious way during a moment of inevitable and human inattention from their parents. Also, I underwent some forms of abuse as a child and I've been in therapy more than half my life and done a lot of reading and I really can't comprehend putting my experiences of abuse in the same class of behaviors as "I let my consistently reckless kid get a tiny burn on his finger from a too-hot plate after the sixteenth time I told him it was too hot and not to touch it, and I immediately iced and dressed the small injury and then comforted him, so he would learn to exercise due caution and not grab a burner or yank a tureen of scalding soup down onto himself during Thanksgiving madness and be seriously injured and traumatized". I'll ask my shrink, but yeah, I think that's well in the clear. (I just asked my boyfriend is his mom ever let him burn himself and he thought a minute and said no, but when he was TEN he ran to hug his older cousin while she was carrying a steaming pot of water to wash something gross off the driveway and he got serious burns all down his chest and that's why his nipples are asymmetrical. O_O He thought the subject was "childhood burns", not "instructive injury", and I know that's anecdotal, but damn.)

My nephew burnt his hand but I rushed in and shouted "STOP DANGEROUS!" and I was too late. At least I tried to stop him. Guess what he still reaches up on the stove because he's autistic and does NOT understand or learn from getting harmed. SO NO it doesn't work for all kids and it IS ABUSE to LET a child get burned to teach them a lesson. That's like saying (Oh my kid pulled a knife from the dishwasher, lets let him learn a lesson an wait and see if he drops it on his foot or uses it wrongly and stabs someone.) NO you walk over and tell them (THIS IS DANGEROUS, don't touch it) and take it away, OR show them how to properly hold and carry it in case they do find one around the house and need to move it.

Scallops have a gillion brightly colored eyes that they use to watch for predators and swim away from them. Some species can live 20 years or more. Some of them migrate en masse with their siblings. Whether or not they feel pain is a strange, unanswered question. No one has any "hard" evidence either way. Some people point to their lack of a brain, but they have some of the most highly developed nervous systems of any bivalve, and in place of a central brain, they process information through a serious of noncentralized, interconnected ganglia. Their entire nervous system may function as a kind of web-brain, so we really don't know. Those who say they dont feel pain explain scallops trying to escape from injury as an "automatic" reaction....but we should consider that during the Enlightenment and even later, this same explanation was given to explain away the pain reaction of animals, for example: dogs beaten with canes or sticks to illustrate the point in public experiments. Literally. Science, though fantastic at many things, doesnt have a long or great history of acknowledging that anything but humans (sometimes even limiting that to certain groups of humans) can feel pain or real emotions. Until recently, no pain relief was offered to male infants being circumsized in hospitals, because there was an assumption that newborn infants felt no pain, which any sane person who has handled an infant for more than ten minutes knows is frightening nonsense. Babies circumcized without pain blockers cry intensely and their heart rates shoot up. Yet for a long time, medical science said that wasn't an indicator of pain. So dont assume we know that scallops dont feel pain, for sure, in reality. We definitely don't know that. Any article that tells you they're somehow vegan is crazy. They're not plants. Scallops don't write books, though. Set your mind at ease there.
