This time was beaten on the 4th May 2004 by Geoff Marshall and Neil Blake who achieved a new record time of 18 hours 35 minutes and 43 seconds

Probably they were able to refine their tactics since then and then you account for route changes, new trains and new timetables!

East London Line doesn't exist any more, that was time consuming. You've just got to be lucky with connections like Mill Hill East, Olympia and the Hainault Loop. If you have to wait 15-20 on each then there goes another hour. A bus ready and waiting for you can save 15 minutes. It's just a combination of being lucky and saving all those groups of 15 minutes and having no delays. When you're traversing the whole network your chances of having a fuck-up free day are next to nothing... ^_^

Also this is the age of the smartphone, you can easily look at how the network is running and change your plans early if you know a certain line is playing up. Back in the day you'd have to wait until you got to the interchange before you found out your next line was fucked. Geoff did this in 2002... I was still using dial-up internet back then lolololol ^_^

"The record for fastest completion is currently held by Andi James and Steve Wilson of the United Kingdom, who completed the challenge in 16 hours, 29 minutes and 13 seconds on 27 May 2011." How on Earth did they beat the time by 3 full hours?

Because the system was different back then. The entire east London line closing made it a lot easier as they didn't have to get Shoreditch during peak hours
