Our family also has a special tuna casserole we all love and fight over my Grandmother’s recipe card. I was lucky enough to be willed her recipe box when she passed. All my cousins are still so angry over that. I did gain some brownie points this Christmas though. I hand copied out ALL her recipes and sent them in Christmas cards.

FILLING 2-*3* cans (7 oz) oil-packed ALBACORE or YELLOWFIN (AHI) TUNA , drained (small cans are 4 oz, large cans 9-oz; may have added more than 7-oz - may try olive oil-packed) 1-*2 or 3* jars CANNED MUSHROOMS - Pennsylvania Dutchman jarred OR FRESH/sautéd 8-*16*oz noodles (PROB a POUND of WIDE EGG NOODLES!), cooked, COOLED under running water, & DRAINED 1 1/2 to *2* cups SOUR CREAM (OR creme fraishe - usually added MORE!) 3/4 cup MILK *1 1/2 teaspoon SALT, to TASTE *1/4 teaspoon PEPPER, to TASTE CAYENNE PEPPER, to TASTE * TOPPING - Double or TRIPLE! * 1/4 cup fine dry BREAD CRUMBS (probably Progresso PLAIN, maybe ITALIAN*; could also use PANKO, or FRESH) 1/4 cup grated PARMESAN cheese DRY PARSLEY in mix and for topping 2 tbsp melted BUTTER (or olive oil) *Dried PARSLEY if using Plain (non-Italian) CRUMBS OPT: PAPRIKA on top OPT: PARMESAN & DRIED PARSLEY on top SIDE - Mom would have served a basic lettuce salad with corn oil & white vinegar, salt & pepper - OR (better yet) a SLICED GREEN PEPPER in oil and vinegar, salt & pepper - as the side. INSTRUCTIONS Mix topping Mix TUNA & MUSHROOMS, SALT & PEPPER Mix filling with al dente noodles and sprinkle with topping. Well firstly…HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎉 This casserole looks filling and wonderful and not enough people appreciate tuna casserole. The most memorable comfort food for me is a straight up Bologna sandwich…white bread, no crust, Mayo on both sides and 2 slices of Bologna cut diagonally of course because it tastes better. For an extra pinch of comfort/nostalgia, I turn on a DCOM. (If you know you know!)

Food can have such a strong association with memories of the past. I remember when I was a child in Palestine, one of my fondest memories of food was eating this wonderful hardy pita bread my grandmother used to make in this old wood-fired oven she had in her garden, along with fresh olive oil from the nearby farmlands. We'd dip the bread in the oil, then dip it in some zaatar, and eat it with some tea. Sadly, I can't quite recreate that memory over here in America - the strong taste of the herbs in the zaatar and the unique, deep flavor of the olive oil from back home is just impossible to get with ingredients you find at markets around here. I truly do miss those days. Thanks for sharing, Sonny! Maybe these awesome recipes you share will help someone create memories of their own someday :)

B-4 I even watch this I have to say, Sonny, tuna casserole is absolutely one of my favorite comfort foods. Yes, my Mom's. All my comfort foods are from my childhood. Especially chicken and dumplings, and I have failed at every attempt to recreate it. America's test kitchen has a recipe for tagliatelle with prosciutto and peas. I've made it many times for friends and family and as a side dish. Could easily be the main course. Never any leftovers. However it reminded me of tuna casserole. So I made it with tuna instead of prosciutto. Magnifico! Your the best, man.

Alright, buddy. I want to know 1) what size baking dish did you use, what was the dimensions of the base, and did you cover it at all? 2) How long does it take for for rue to take between adding more milk? 3) Does it need to be served immediately? Can I bake it, let it sit and reheat in the oven? What's the convention for timing this dish for dinner? Mine is in the over baking. It did not fit into one dish, so I have a personal size in there too. Next time i want to find a more shallow dish, I am afraid mine wont bake evenly because it's too tall. The proportions seem balanced and I am excited for how it turns out. I added milk to rue too quickly without letting it come together, but then I let it cook for a minute at a time in between stirs, and it ultimately came together. I also added peas after adding the pasta, which is harder to incorporate, so follow his sequence for ease! Feeling tre Minnesotan, my first ever casserole having been born and raised here. Thanks for the recipe!

I always think of tuna casserole as cheap comfort food. I would never throw a $6 can of tuna into this, you want the chunk light tuna that is only $2 per can, the more expensive stuff isn't going to elevate this. My wife loves tuna casserole. I make it pretty much exactly how you do here. But she still likes her version better: boil pasta, dump water out, add canned tuna and miracle whip, mix, eat. I'll grant that her version comes together in 15 minutes and she apparently used to eat that a lot as a kid, so she likes it that way, but I still can't bring myself to eat that. That actually looks good. I didn't grow up eating casserole; I've heard of it on tv n sht, and the thought of it always grossed me out (especially the words "tuna" and "casserole" in the same sentence), and so for years I never had it or knew what a casserole was. Now my brother-in-law, his mom raised him on casseroles and so when he joined our family, green bean casserole is what he always brought to family dinners and so the first time I had it was in 2012, and honestly I didn't care for it because of the canned cream of mushroom. I've tried other casseroles since then and they all have cream of mushroom in them. I googled what a casserole was back then and saw that is like _the ingredient_ that is a staple of casseroles of all types, and so I stayed away from them all and dismissed the casserole as a weird/gross upper Midwest dish... But as I said at the beginning, this actually looks pretty good. The onions cooking in butter, all the cheese, the tuna actually looked nice (as opposed to the tuna I remember from elementary school looking like wet Purina cat food lol) and the breadcrumb crust. It looks like really good comfort food. Oh, and no cream of mushroom 👌🏿 haha

😁 I grew up on this too but ours was made with cream of mushroom soup and topped with crumbled potato chips.

Ours, too. Now I make it with my quick, but delicious homemade mushroom soup. I sautee, in lots of butter, a good amount of mushrooms, with some onion, thyme, salt and pepper. I cook my flour into it, then stir in half and half. When it's thickened I add a splash of sherry. From there I add my noodles, tuna, peas and chucks of cheese, and stir them together, adjusting the seasoning. I cover it all with cheese and potato chips, or buttered panko crumbs, and bake. The homemade mushroom soup makes a tremendous difference, and I like running into the gooey, melted chunks of cheese.

Same and cream of mushroom soup was added to make a chicken pie. 👍
