Who are the twelve Æsir gods? How many children done Odin have? (it's none of my business his private and love life, but let us peep into it, for academic purposes, of course).

Another great video! The use of 7 & 12, in particular, are nearly ubiquitous in all religions due to their deep astronomical/astrological/astro-theological implications. The "Celestial 7" refers to all of the know, observable heavenly bodies in Antiquity (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) this is also why we have 7 days of the week, 7 notes in a scale, 7 seals & 7 trumpets, Lucky Number 7, white light breaks down into 7 colors, etc...etc...etc...The number 12 is an Ancient indicator of the 12 houses of the Zodiac known from deepest Antiquity. Hence, 12 disciples, 12 Aesir gods, 12 Knights of the Round Table, we even count in base 12 in business when items are ordered by the "dozen"(12" and/or "gross"(12 x 12 = 144), etc...etc....etc...These numbers, and others of particular note, are deeply woven into virtually every world mythos ever created by Man, so that we would never forget them and their "sacred"/"divine" nature. As above, so below....

Norse Paganism was never fully gone, though it came close, my grandmother came from a Pagan community in Sweden and from what she said it was kept secret for 100s of years. I was still sort of young when she told me about the Gods and practices, so I don't remember everything, and she died before I really started getting into it.

There's a 10th obscure son of Odin named Meili. He is mentioned by Thor in the Poetic Edda, given that the other brothers are omitted, it's likely that Jörð is his mother, making him Thor's only full blooded brother. Making the sons of Odin: Þórr, Meili, Týr, Heimdallr, Bragi, Baldr, Höðr, Hermóðr, Víðarr, and Váli.

I find this 'apology' thing quite disturbing in reflection of the history of the church upon the nations here.

Brilliant presentation that I enjoyed a lot. I have long arrived at the assumption that religious (and cultural) changes were never abrupt. I think that rather than thinking of Christianisation, it is far more true that it was the incorporation of different theologies. There are so many examples of this in our archeaological heritage. In Britain, churches replaced henges and megalithic monuments. Churches and cathedrals are in fact megalithic sacred places in their own right. It is no surprise that these Christian temples were built on, or near, pagan sacred places, almost exclusively. The sacred springs, which were so important to our pagan ancestors became holy wells. And the megalithic waymarkers which were so important in wild lands, became holy stones carved with Christian symbolism. Even the Druids themselves were simply transposed into monks. And of course, we are all aware of the pagan traditions incorporated into Christianity. Easter, Christmas, etc. I think that it is absolutely right that a new arrival, with new traditions and customs, and religion, would have had to present these new ideas as something palatable to the natives. So, just as the people merged, so did their culture. The number 12 incorporated into so many religions, suggests that this concept predates the religions that utilise them. And to this I believe, that 12 was not introduced to paganism from Christianity, but was incorporated into Christianity from paganism. The worship of zodiacal "gods" was certainly around a long time before Christainity. It emulated the passage of constructed constellations around the ecliptic in the heavens. Neopaganism assumes this into astrology and annual sequences in the stars. Even modern archaeology assumes that such devices were introduced into culture with the advent of ancient farming, to inform the farming communities of seasonal requirements. However, I believe this is nonsense. It has been the downfall of many farmers to religously sow their crops by the day and month of the year. And our ancient ancestors would have been far more influenced, not by the date, but with the environmental conditions they were intimately connected to. For example, geese do not fly north on a certain day in the calender. However, I do have an alternative suggestion, that seems almost impossible, but can be archeaologically proven. We are so acclimatised to the zodiac and its annual passage that we cannot see beyond it, even as simply as knowing what month it is. But the pre-Christian worship of the ancients is a huge clue. Because we live in "ages". We are currently in the age of Capricorn, on the cusp of the age of Aquarius. Each age lasts around 2150 years, and cumulatively adds up to 25,800 years. Also known as The Great Year, as explained by the precession of the equinox. The Sumerian tablets of 5000 BCE suggests "the return of the gods" at intervals of around 2200 years. The Mayan calender has a sequence calculated around a 25,800 year cycle. And even in Christianity, for the last 2,000 years the world has been ruled by Satan, the horned character, or astrologically speaking, Capricorn. The name Capricorn is ancient Greek, and does not mean goat, but "goat horned". When Satan is deposed, he will be dismissed .... for a while. The point being that these ancient rites were not about a month in the year. But an age in the great year. 12 of these ages make up a great year. Attributing them to god characters is simply personification of a scientific phenomena. And actually, using archaeoastronomy, this principle is unlocking the meaning of the pagan temples - stone circles. These monuments are probably devices for indicating a time during the great year. Indeed a megalithic timescale. And why not ? Those ancestors didn't have a number for the year. How else would they mark the time of their existence and heritage. And how would a new belief system incorporate that culture within it's own ? The Norse pantheon is a different story. It is not associated with those traditions at all. But that is a whole diferent story 😁

Hello my friend. I study the ancient peoples here in Virginia in the USA. Not too far off the Atlantic coast. I’ve been finding artifacts near mound sites that have been overlooked over the years. They are very similar to Norse and Celtic mounds and have those religious symbols around these places. I believe that had a much more influence in trade or settling with the native Americans here in the area. Offerings are made around these mounds and in streams to an earth goddess that they called the horned serpent. Axe heads, hammers, spears, arrow points were offered into these pools in the streams near springs and bogs. There are several oak groves nearby that lightning very often strikes in these areas. I feel like there is a definite correlation between the cultures. There are many ancient symbols at these sites. Some of these sites go back 10,000 years or more and it seems like some of these peoples from Europe may have settled here long before the more modern natives.

@@pooch83 there are varieties of oak that grow near the coastal plain, but they grow in stands of other deciduous trees such as cottonwood, maple, and sycamore. The vast majority of trees growing in distinct groves that you'll find are pines, particularly varieties like loblolly pine. I haven't heard of distinct burial mounds east of the Appalachians, but I do know that in the area, native people would preferentially reside on hills simply for the reason of not getting flooded out. Lastly, as for the particular artifacts if they exist at all. This is one of the most populated regions in North America. How is the OP sure that these artifacts, again if they exist at all, aren't the garbage left behind by new-age pagans having rituals in the woods or by groups such as the KKK engaging in their activities? Both are known to use these symbols or lookalikes. Now, don't get me wrong. If this is real, I would love to read even a draft of the publications concerning it and see photos of the artifacts... but everything I've seen, read, and lived points to this being a wonderful fiction of "the Europeans were more involved than we think!"
@tylertalley4652
@tylertalley4652 2 жыл бұрын
Gentlemen, I’m just stating some of the research and investigations I have found through a lifetime of work I’ve put in. I metal detect and search for early native sites. I also study the mythology of the peoples in North American and those of Western Europe and see an overlapping and mixture of artifacts. Apparently they dna tested some people from Iceland and found that they shared an ancestor from America that was likely from pre 1000 ad. The mounds are almost identical to those seen in Europe. I’m writing a book on my findings. There is said to be only 6 mounds in Virginia but there are hundreds if not thousands. Some of these were from pre flood peoples and some after. There are mounds around all the original road beds and along streams and rivers. Most are hidden in plain site because of the topography of the piedmont. I think it’s very possible that some tribes escaped Europe when the Roman’s invaded and possibly before and after as Christianity spread. I would say it’s definitely in the realm of possibilities and not “bulls$&@“ neither society wrote down their history in those times. The native tribes of the east spoke of these mound sites as something almost foreign to them and that there was a magical aspect about them. They used these burial sites as well. Mounding the dirt a little higher each time.

Arith, have you by chance read the book Zealot by Reza Aslan? It essentially does to Jesus (his Greek name, not Hebrew) what the Christians did to the pagan gods - it humanizes him. I found it a real eye opener. Aslan is a Christian turned Muslim, and Muslims never believed Jesus to be a god in the first place, but a prophet and healer.

I haven't read that one, sounds interesting. Some years ago I was doing an archaeological work on a building which served as all kinds of sacred space through time, from pagan pre-Roman temple, Roman, PaleoChristian, Muslim, Christian and so on. That work led me to visit the only existing and functioning mosque in the country, quite the modern one. This was a work of several people, we were about 20, and we wanted to understand the use of spaces and the architectural changes and what space was what in each period and according to the religious functions. Long story short, we went to this modern mosque to talk with the Imam and look around and understand the function of the spaces, and the guy started to try to convert us lol, but I remember that particular point you just mention - Jesus isn't understood as a god to muslims but one of the many prophets. It was quite curious and I ended up learning a lot more about Islam than what was previously planned.

Very exciting video my friend. 👍 I was kind of confirmed / and more confused 😆 In that my own approach to Asatro/superstition is filled with a lot more than just the written sources and the archaeological finds. My own approach was initially through these 2 "ways" But as the years went by and I learned more and got older myself. May I admit that I have become more confused about all the sources as well as the archeological finds and remains. Today, in the year 2022, I myself only have a few gods that I have adopted (if you can say it that way? 😁) When I was new I remember talking to a friend that I was no longer a Christian but a pagan. He asked me if it was okay that there is "1 god for every thing" such as Freya who was love and fertility. And at that point I answer "Yes, and then there is a god for the wind and one for the sea and one for the sky and one for desires and one for feeling etc." When I came home and had to read - Tryms-Kvadet (Translated from Old Norse by Thøger Larsen Published 1926) I got 2 years into my "new" faith at that time. A form of insecurity. Because I thought shit... I've really got a lot of work ahead of me now.... there is a god or a hero or a source or a found evidence etc. For every thing in Norse mythology. Now how do I find out what is "right"? And "fake"? And I must say those questions are still there at times 🙃 The more I learn about something the more confused I get. BUT... a few years back now. Did I notice something? A form of energy mixed with 1000 different thoughts and feelings inside myself. But in the physical place I was, it was like a lot of old and new energies from the area. Like the trainers, the earth, the wind, even the little insects beaming their ....Yes energy to me... I felt familiar with it all. Like a lid inside me was opened? ... Yes it sounds a bit crazy but it was that experience/supernatural energy that made me find that kind of peace in my then "new" faith. (I come from a small town in West Jutland with approx. 4000 inhabitants) here I stood on a burial mound / giant's room. Personally for me, my approach and belief is something else? I can't quite explain it as it's my own approach now.😆 But I still read about the sagas and legends, folklore, etc. And I follow new excavations. But I also "borrow" things from other denominations, religion and nature worship. Such as. the ancient Indian tribes around the world. And various people throughout time have used Animism in their daily lives. I just want to emphasize that I do not cultivate Animism which some make into something completely different today! I'm not saying it's the right or wrong way..just that I don't grow it that way. 😊👍 That was a bit about my thought I got when I saw your video here 😊 Every time I see one of your videos, I always get a kind of joy and a rush in me. It's a good thing from here, you should know 😄👍we share a lot of the same things and I love that when you come up with a point of view/feeling/thought/question etc. that I didn't even think of myself (happens often these days) or I personally feel it in a completely different way 👍😄 Anyway, I will keep watching and commenting on your videos. All the best to you from here 🍀👍 What I want to say "in short" is: I understand why people get confused about - what is true and what is false, is it hard to navigate? The help for this is difficult to know as there are many different areas/factors that come into play. 1. First you have to break EVERYTHING you have learned from child to adult. 2. Try to combine many, many different experiences of others into your own. 3. And you should NEVER be "stuck" on things. Everything changes all the time. New findings? New sources? Etc. 4. Find your own picture of it all. If you feel it's true then it's true!? 😊👍 5. I keep rambling 🤯🙃😆👍😊 Shortly said You get smarter and you get more confused 😆👍 That's why the world here on your channel is really exciting and good. It brings people together for a good conversation about their own or other people's experiences 😊🔮 I will stop now and say Many thanks for a good video as always 👍 very good day to you and everyone else here on the channel. Best regards from Denmark

The star stories are very ancient. The 12, more or less: offspring, animals, chimera, objects, deities, temples, lands and voids were identified by ancestors. A hardy people and peace loving to have made them, miraculously so in that we still have them imbedded in our lives in a multitude of forms. 4 quadrants, 3 figures in each quadrant, and a hero on either side. All constellations. Three parts needed to document the seasons. The heros, Orion x Heracles/Ophiuchus. The figures around the equatorial region from Cancer to Leo. A center, Draco. These basics needed to calculate, predict cosmic events. Tenants, stories, star lore woven in many ways. Tragedy is the separation of the star stories from the stars, seasons-knowing them. These were known before the really bad weather and the one god people and many still know.

Árið, you're throwing yet another cat amongst the pigeons! Bravo! And more power to you. I do so like your videos and your intelligent analysis. I also have much the same beliefs when it comes to the 'sacred' texts of Heathenry. I always inwardly shudder when out in the community and people speak of the 'Allfather', the God of the gods, and do it honestly and casually as a given, verified through academic research and being a trusted and verified shared belief, unshakable. And I go, "Really? Have you all read Sturluson's Edda and not seen the oh so obvious rewrites? You don't think it might just have been Valfadr, a much different, darker meaning, and have the 'V' removed?" And that's just one of many things that seem to have put me on odds with the not quite local heathen community here in the UK. I already now am looking forward to your next video catching out unsuspecting 'pidgeons' with good research and analysis!

Did you know? Arith Härger (real name: João Figueiredo) is not a Heathen but a Left Hand Path occultist who uses Norse/Germanic themes. He is neither Finnish nor Danish like he claims to be online, but is a Portuguese national working at the University of Lisbon's Archaeology Department. He is not an archaeologist. In the wake of George Floyd's murder and subsequent protests in the U.S., João wrote a series of tweets that indicate a lack of understanding of systematic racism and the marginalization of racial minorities. Not only were the tweets tone deaf in nature and blatantly incorrect, but he then employed gaslighting tactics when he came under fire for the tweets. He later deleted these tweets from his account, but some are viewable here: imgur.com/a/MbfXInx.

Thank you friend. Indeed, there seems to be that particular problem when people at in a sort of transition between their past beliefs (or the beliefs they grew up with or have been indoctrinated into) and pagan and/or animistic mind sets. I understand the difficulty of trying to perceive the world through another lens, so to speak, but still the more familiar concepts are the basis of thought and it's hard to see past that. More often than not our mind is the first limitation we set in ourselves that prevents us from reaching further and seeing other perspectives. It takes time and patience and I thinkg it's always a work in progress.

The 12 sign zodiac predates Christianity, and can be associated with the "sky gods" of the Indo-European people. The 12 disciples can be correlated to archetypes of the zodiac as well, and Jesus with the sun. Christian mythology drew from the same fundamental concepts of astrology, which was observed by many ancient cultures, especially non-christian or early Christian societies.I don't think the spiritual significance of the number 12 originated with Christianity, they just co-opted it because of it's fundamental symbolic nature

Indeed, as I've pointed out in other videos, the number 12 as a religious symbology did not originated with Christians. The point here is that the number 12 in Norse myths comes from Judeo-Christian influences and not pagan ones. Magical numbers in pre-Christian Scandinavia are usually around the number 3, 7, 9 and 27 (there's indeed a pattern of multiples of 3 (except for 7), but the number 12 wasn't one of them yet). The number 12 became far more meaningful in Icelandic written sources post-Catholic period. Snorri gave a lot of focus on the number 12, based on his own religious ideals (Catholicism) and based on reinterpreted Classical myths by Christians (Snorri did the exact same thing that was being done to pagan myths in Continental Europe - reinterpretation of myths to show "Christian ideologies" in past civilizations as the ancestors of the contemporary Christians to legitimize Christianity as a kind of ideology "far older" than what it appeared - basically demanding the right over lands and peoples based on a fake widepread past, which is the same type of religious-political ideology the Nazis would use in the first half of the XX century). Many people want to find deep meanings for these similarities in symbology, but we often fail to see that these similarities, in their great majority, are political strategies of past civilizations and more recent ones (usually from the Medieval Period), and that the religious and spiritual meanings have little importance in these cases because symbols and ideologies become mere tools of the Elites.

@@ArithHärger While this is your fields of expertise I would think we can only guestimate how important numerology was and if 12 was a significant number to Pagan cultures. Certainly it was the realm of women in Viking culture, pre Christianity, and religious patriarchy removed nearly all of the sorcery evidence and replaced it with the male sphere of influence. Perhaps one of the reasons Christianity appealed to an aggressive diaspora of Scandinavians? It certainly worked for Rome for a while. Remove all the female deities and the associated social and cultural powers it gave to women.

@ArithHärger 2 жыл бұрын
I am very, very (very much indeed) surprised that a Norwegian museum would say something like that. Of all the Scandinavian late Iron Age deities, why go for Frigg, I wonder? Not a lot of evidences on her, especially in terms of religious-cultic places, as she only became more relevant in much later periods with the progressive Christianization. And I guess we just throw out the window Thor and every major archaeological finding, like Thor's hammers, Thor's iconography, the only god evoked on Rune stones. So it seems the Skog tapestry never existed then, depicting the three most important gods: Odin, Freyr and Thor, as it is also attested in literary sources and accounts of Heathen Temples and the gods present there; and why not forget about the Oseberg ship as well if we are at this, and the entire relevance of Freyja to the point that even in Iceland it was long debated the case of Freyja and her worship, making her the only Nordic deity whose worship lasted longer in the North than any other deity; Ullr is just some random name, I guess, if we are to believe that museum. It's only 27 place-names dedicated to his cult in Norway (rising to 35 if we count with the name "Ullinn") and 48 in Sweden. What kind of museum is that? The "Museum of Absolute Bullsh!t?" or is it a Marvel themed park? Jokes aside, can you tell me what museum is that? I should like to contact them on that matter to understand what's up with that. Anyway, concerning Loki, I've done a video about that subject which I will leave the link here, and it has bibliography at the end of that video so you can check it too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqSvdJyBopelgLM

This is food for thought and will deserve my attention to research further.

As far as Frigg and Odin are concerned there is no distinction between paganism and monotheism. There is only one system here. There may be cultural distinctions, but there is only one underlying system. The complexity is inherent in the structure of the homo sapien brain which has evolved to a broadly homogenous set of archetypal potentials Loki is intriguing. All the others work towards the completion of a goal. Loki just does what he feels like. I sometimes wonder if the rest of us just work for him, and he's tricked us into this whole affair. Sometimes you listen to him, and you are clearly listening to God, then a moment later, you realise you are listening to The Devil. It's quite disconcerting. "imaginary" is a fallacious idea. It may have meaning in the material world, but to the Fae, "imaginary" is just another form of being. Ultimately all individuals should be strong enough to stand alone. We are individuals. We are Ones, Odins. Ordinarily a man will pair to a woman. Adam and Eve, Odin and Frigg, Zeus and Hera. This is natural. It is common. The Renaissance developed out of an energetic condition that caused archetypes to rise in people's minds. Some people turn this into creative work, and some people become those archetypes, with the ultimate intention that all people should know themselves to be Odin or Frigg, and if all goes well, to find each other. The process of a developing pantheon is complicated though. The Archangel Michael is the first to know. He starts in a Samael state and becomes Odin as Michael. Next comes Thor, recognising that the anger and frustration of Samael is Thor, he becomes Odin as Raphael. He is helped by his association with Loki, who is Oriel. He is motivated by the woman, Freyja, who has shown herself to be Isobel, and is intended to become Frigg. In the Christian emergence two millennia ago, Loki was Judas. The healer Raphael was someone else. Freyja/Isobel has a counterbalance to create impartiality in Thor, that is the other Freyja, the valkyrie, Iris, Eris, Sekhmet, Amenouzume, Eronel. Thor being a Hermes/Zeus identity has two beside him. Hades, who considers all of this entire thing to be a total load of B.S. and Njordr/Poseidon, who waits to see what will ultimately come of it all. There are others. Artemis is prominent for a start. There is a complicated structure, like a team, working together and in conflict to achieve an end. The end being to create understanding, and to bring the light. Lilith is the Frigg essence, but I know her as Lacey, she matches the description of Sif. She is the feminine Lili counterpart of the masculine Óðr Lilu neteru element.

The suncross is very, very, very pagan. They always argue where they found it first, Europe or Asia. They always find older symbols from time to time. But they say the oldest in Europe is found in the Slavic areas. The Black Sun/Sonnenrad is not old though, they say it was created in Germany in the 30's. I am very open as to what it can mean, the twelve spokes and all. But I do believe the intention of the creation was to seem Pagan. We can talk about numbers and how the different religions use different numerology but I do believe 12 is not just Abrahamic as 12 has been used in Europe before Christianity by the Greeks for example. Numerology is cross religious in my belief as it is astrological and set in the material. You don't need to be from a specific religion to use specific numbers. I believe the Nazis intended it to be a Pagan symbol like all the other occult stuff they were doing. They were Christians yes but I do believe some of the inner circles were into Paganism. You see it allot in their art like in SS etc. But who knows, maybe it was a merge between the Pagan and Christian? What we can be sure of is that it is new. I struggle to find old Black Sun findings. One thing I want to mention though, is the power we give these symbols when we obsessively want to veil the symbol as if it was something dangerous. I remember reading a chat where someone complained about their post being removed because it contained a swastika related to some older Carlsberg art. The OP was told he was "Dispelling the dangerous symbol". And I thought like... Is that the purpose? Is it supposed to hold these dark energies forever? So that when a random stranger walks past a concrete wall with a swastika on it his energy will be drawn and he will go back home to his family and talk about the dangerous symbol he saw on the wall. Which just depicts the sun... Fuck that xD Take the symbol back, cleanse the spelling, dispell the magick. The more we are obsessed with the "dangerous swastika" the more power those people that use it will have. It's as if the war is still going on inside our heads, we have collectively gone into a psychosis that span generations. While in Asia they have no flippin' connection like that at all. It's the sun, It's ok. If used by Pagans so be it. The Christians will not touch it that's for sure. History is after all being written as we speak. We need to move forward from this Hitler bs.

The Roman Empire went from Pagan to Christian and due to its size and complexity would already have spread the Middle Eastern theologies (and culture), especially Abrahamic, to Scandinavia if even just along trade routes and other communication channels. It would be minimal contact and I am not even suggesting Roman pilgrims or Christian converts even had any foothold beyond the Germanic tribal regions given insular cultural rejections of the Romanized world but cross pollination inevitable. The last region to be Christianised in Europe was Lithuania in the Middle Ages. I was surprised that Sunday is a Germanic etymology and Monday is Old Norse (proximity of moon to Old Norse oral expression). Only Saturn nods to the Roman past. Tua, Wodin, Thor, Freya/Frigg/Freyr day...the greatest irony in my mind of Christian conversion of Scandinavian culture was the legitimizing of Viking raids as far as the Middle East as a Norwegian king led the 1st Crusade and set the template for rape, loot and pillage with the blessing of the Pope, head of the new western European super state of Catholicism. N.B. conversion of the British Isles and potentially other northern cultures was more influenced by the Romano Irish Christian version than the relaunched Papal version and had had centuries to mesh with the Celtic indigenous philosophy giving it a distinct brand more acceptable to Pagan conversion. N.B.B. Chinese culture, some 6000 years old, has the 12 Zodiac houses on a solar and seasonal cycles.

I like your videos, however i have to say that to the unexperienced viewers this video seems to suggest that all the similarities are the result of Christian influence, actually there IS a common origin to all mythologies, indoeuropean and semitic, and they have influenced each other since ancient times, so by going back in time we will find MORE similarities between religions, not less. Some people have said that Snorri Sturluson euhemerized everything, for example he talked about Asgard as a city on Earth with walls etc, others instead say he turned into a heaven, so what is the truth? I read Snorri, he does add some personal twist to mythology but overall it fits the "original", the further back in time we go, the more euhemerized the tales become, this is true for indoeuropean religions as well as the Bible, with "gods" who are mere mortals with limited ranges of action and limited knowledge. Apart from that, i like what you said about Odin not being that important and not being the father of all in ancient times.

So paganism is kinda the first religion from magic. Magic or alchemy was the first religion, everything else are like memoirs of magic we call religion but is just different histories of the same story we all come from. The fallen angels or gods are all the same they just had different forms off the different accepts beliefs in each civilization

They’re Indo-Iranian in origin, and in-turn is Proto-Indo-European in origin. Like the Greco-Roman Deity: _Ζεύς/Lūpiter,_ and the Germanic: _Þórr/Þunraz/Þuner/Þunor,_ aswell the Vedic: _Indra,_ who all three come from the Proto-Indo-European God: *Perkʷunos.*

It represents the twelve tribes of Israel which correlates with the twelve tribes of Israel that were taken into captivity by the assyrians. When the assyrian empire started to fall the Israelites were deported to the lands northwest of assyria. The only lands northwest of assyria is what is now Europe. These deported Israelites crossed through the Caucasus mountains and formed the Germanic tribes who were never there at the time of the israelite captivity in assyria.

9 or 18 would make better sense then 12 really because of the number 9 is the number of god

The key is in Language. Æsir comes from the Etruscan Aesar, pronounced almost the same, which is why it was taken by Cæsar. All of this predates Christianity, even Rome, but without exception it comes from Italy, and before that, Ægypt/Æthiopia/India (even the runes).
