** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
A debut on the channel today for Chris C and their puzzled Twisted Magic, which is an unusual sudoku based around the magic square! This is a LOT of fun and you can play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingth...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. In cages, digits must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Digits cannot repeat within a cage. Clues outside the grid give the sum of the digits along the indicated diagonal. Digits may repeat along such diagonals if allowed by other rules. Digits in shaded cells must form a 'twisted magic square' with no repeating digits. A magic square is where the row, column and main diagonals (ignoring the unshaded cells) all sum up to the same number.

It must have been frustrating to see Simon not follow how the third cell of each "hinge" related to the "top" of its magic square line, especially when he just picks up on it at 22:44 and then immediately abandons it! Really elegant logic mechanic you had there--helped me out very early on! Great puzzle.

👏Luckily, your elegant "hinge" logic (that I missed unfortunately) was explained below by *Waggles.* In short, it allows you to conclude immediately and very quickly that *r4c7 = r3c5* *r7c6 = r5c7 + 1* (playback time 22:12) *r6c3 = r7c5 - 2* *r3c4 = r5c3 - 1*

I also missed the *parity* logic that Simon used to enter candidates in the "hinges", at playback time 18:08. But it was not too difficult for me to solve the puzzle otherwise. Luckily, although my alternative solving path was not as elegant as the intended path, I enjoyed it.

This channel has been a fantastic way to improve at these puzzle games. Early on I would do my best until I got stuck, then watch the video for the next clue, and repeat until it was solved. Now I'm finding myself pushing through the solve myself, then watching the video of entertainment and new ideas. The progress has been quick and I thank you for your continued guidance! Spent 80 minutes on the puzzle, only to realize I made a mistake. Came back to this video, compared my board with Simon's, and 10 minutes later I'd found the mistake (it was something I'd filled in at minute 30, and it took me almost an hour to realize it was wrong). Usually when I make a mistake like that, I just give up and abandon the puzzle. Because of these videos, I was able to (eventually) figure out what I did wrong and finish the puzzle properly, which is such a good feeling.

I think you missed something really brilliant with this puzzle. The third square in the four cages that interacted with the magic square each were a fixed offset from a different square in the magic square. For example, r4c7 is exactly equal to r3c5. This is because the r3c5+r4c6+r5c7 magic square edge adds to 15, and the cage with r4c6+r5c7+r4c7 is also 15, so r4c7 = r3c5. You get similar relations between the other 3 caged digits (i.e. r7c6 = r5c7 +1, r6c3 = r7c5 -2, and r3c4 = r5c3 -1). Then some deductions in the bottom 3 rows whittle away at options which propagate around the magic square through these relationships until you run into a single value for one square which collapses the puzzle.

37:26 I always find it funny watching the video afterwards and seeing them take a different route. I saw the implications of the cages overlapping the magic square immediately and broke in that way. Same. I had realized that there were only really 8 combinations to the magic square and took about 3 minutes in my sudoku spreadsheet (Its essentially just dozens of blank sudoku grids) that I have on standby filling in the 8 possible combinations and quickly worked out there were only 3 actual legal combinations thanks to the cages that then as you expand outward became only 2 possible combinations and then once the 10 cage in box 4 was determined to be 9/1 left only the 1 combination. I am pretty sure that is how I was able to solve it in 45 minutes instead of the 1 hour his 30 min completion time would indicate it should take me based on how much longer I usually take than him to solve these things.

@@jacobcombs1106 As I say, it drove me mad trying to juggle it all in my head. I love spreadsheets and use excel for everything. I do personal lists, databases, etc. I wrote a nice (but not pretty) spreadsheet for my gas mileage that figures my mpg for the latest fillup, mpg since I started the spreadsheet 8 years ago, some columns just diary info--place of purchase, notes, date--, and how much money that fillup would have cost me with my previous car and its avg mpg (and running totals). Years ago, I even tried to do a Sudoku Solver in excel, but it got rather complicated, so I set it aside. Then they started coming out, of course, so there was no need to reinvent the wheel. I'm medium proficient, knowing more than the basics. The main thing is knowing what's possible, then figuring out how to do it when you need it. But I'm still blown away by all these fancy things like the dashboards. If I were still in the business, I'd probably be better. You should def. be proud of that ability. I keep hearing that to be that guy with that skill is really in demand now.

After you set the magic square, the 13 and 15 cages total 28, and, include two pairs that each add to 10 because of the magic square. r6c3 and r4c7 are either a 26 pair, or both 4. If they are a 26 pair, r6c4 must be 3. R9c6 cannot be a two, else the 1234 cage in box 9 would have to have 1,2, and 4 [64 cage in box 8, and 1234 cage in box 7.] in the top row of the 1234 cage in box 9.

Simon, really! Use your eyes man. Looking is an active process. It's not just a matter of moving your eyes, you have to process the pattern of photons that hit your retina. You remind me of the woman who, while I was driving a bright red car in broad daylight, with perfect visibility, and no other traffic on the road, looked straight at me, yet pulled out across three lanes and drove straight into me. She pointed her eyes in my direction, but didn't process the information. I dread to think what your insurance is like if you drive like you play sudoku. What a great debut for Chris C. I was surprised how much more tricky the twisted magic square was compared to an untwisted one, which are usually trivial to resolve. The apparently overly generous 4-cell cages really weren't as helpful as they first appeared, even when they gave quads a-plenty.

Simon, I was very sad when you abandoned the parity bit as in Box 8 it would have helped you a lot to realise that you needed 2 blue squares in row 7 and since 5 had to be in Row 7 but not C5, then that had to be blue and therefore not 6 or 8. Once you know that the leap to the 3 square cages sums and differences is a bit easier to see and work out. Otherwise loved the video as usual.

However, I wondered if I might suggest using the pen tool to show path directions before colouring? There have been a couple of moments where the deductions haven’t quite been so clear cut whereas sketching the path would mean that you don’t have to worry about getting confused with region colours. Hope this helps, though you are still in a different league when it comes to solving sudoku. ;)

Around 9:20: the central cages are even more informative than odd-even. Compare the cage sums (13, 14, 15, 16) with the diagonal sums. The third digit in the 15 (off the magic square) must be the same as the top digit of the magic square. The third digit of the 13 must be two less than the bottom of the magic square. I found the text description of the twisted square pretty confusing. It ended up working the way I would have expected from the visual, but the fact that it included the standard magic square description with "row, column and main diagonals", without referencing the fact that the square's rows and columns are diagonals in the sudoku grid (and vice versa) threw me off for a bit.

Simon, I'd love to understand how you scan these puzzles. I find myself yelling at my monitor to resolve a square that you have now gained information to resolve your pencil marks. but in the mean time you'll go and find things that seem completely obscure to me and will eventually resolve the square I've been looking at through an entire different series of resolves

Part of what makes him a great solver of these obscure puzzles is that he can fix his mind on the more complex logic or patterns and not get lost in the details. It also makes him a less than brilliant speed solver which is why he doesn’t like doing competition puzzles, which rely more on scanning and bifurcating to get fast times.

You will often hear him say that he should do sudoku when he gets stuck. This is because he tends to be working through the variant rules and clues rather than scanning the way you do for sudoku. So even though he marks a box, if he doesn't see it immediately resolve he will go back to the variant rules, and if it does, he will look at about 4-5 marks at most before going back to the variant stuff. Only if all the variant stuff is resolved so all that's left is sudoku, only then is he consistent in resolving all the marks. That has been my general observation at least.

@@icepyrox Also, when he doesn't know where to look next, a good idea is to look where his cursor is, because he has this uncanny ability of pointing at the right place while saying he doesn't know where to look next. ;)

@@stephenbeck7222 Unfortunately, the opposite is true. Simon's trademark is getting lost in the details. He had a 13 pair. Never used it. He used some other complicated logic. That's not good for viewers. He could have removed a lot of candidates quickly around the magic square by noting that all the cages were almost 15 and shared two cells on a magic square line that summed to 15. So the extra cell would make up the diffeence. When he was explaining the logic about why the 1 couldn't go in r7c6 for example, but instead did it the long way around. Every solve, Simon is missing stuff that he would never have missed a year ago.

Box 7 is perhaps the most I have been yelling at the screen for this channel. How the 1234 cage interacts with the other 10 cage in the box and the little killer. Well myself really. Like puzzle pieces that should fit together but just don't properly.

I like magic squares, but they just give away far too much information. Perhaps more staggered magic square puzzles in the future? Eg ones that contain repeated digits might be very interesting.

I hate this type, where there is a multiple-possibility pattern, and the only way I know to work it out is to essentially goodliffe everything and then bifurcate like mad, trying to find that one essential key. What a tedious mess to fight through. I struggled with it for almost two hours, then surrendered, and watched the video up until the disambiguation of the B8 10 cage. I just completely overlooked that possible conflict. After that I was finally able to breeze through the rest without incident.

Magic square puzzles disappoint me, since there only exists one 3x3 magic square. You did a bunch of interesting logic to derive it, but magic squares are solved and you can just treat it as 9 given cells (modulo rotation and reflection)
