Jack Of The Lantern shares an image with that of the phantom brakeman who dies trying to save the train: doomed to walk the line for all eternity, the lantern he had once waved in warning is now his only aid in endlessly searching for his own head. These phantoms (more than one is reported) are sometimes said to stand guard over the old line and continue to flag warnings for unseen danger.

I'm allergic to pumpkins (and their relatives) and I get hives from trying to carve them I tried that turnip thing a couple years ago and they are SO hard to hollow out and carve. Pumpkins are so easily hollowed out, but turnips do not have the natural interior chamber. That said: the best turnip I managed to hollow out and carve a face into was so much more terrifying than any pumpkin. Maybe they had a different kind of knife when they were doing it in the old days? It hurt my hand to do it for sure.

the 2nd jack o lantern story reminds me of this one story where an old Chinese lady has a tree that you can't climb back down unless she lets you(I forget how she gets the tree). When death comes for her soul, she asks him to get her a fruit from the tree, which gets him stuck there permanently, a few years pass and nobody dies because death is stuck in the tree but this leads to overpopulation. The old lady then agrees to let death go as long as he doesn't come for her soul.

The Jack of the Lantern for lore sounds a lot like the origin of the Billy and Mandy character named Jack O lantern. Except he makes a deal with the Grim Reaper instead of the Devil. Clearly the Billy and Mandy writers knew the story and made a pretty fun adaptation of it for their special.

It's a great movie. Funnily enough, I watch it during Christmas rather than Halloween. Despite the ghoulishness, the movie strikes me as a Christmas movie more than it does a Halloween one. Probably has to do with the plot being an homage to How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the stop-motion (like Rankin/Bass), and Danny Elfman's very Christmasy Nutcracker-esque music (even "This Is Halloween" sounds a bit like a Christmas carol when you think about it... very "Carol of the Bells").

And let's not forget the truest of all jack-o'-lantern lore's. The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Jack was an annoying prankster who Grim was forced to make a deal with (the gift of immortality so he could keep playing tricks forever). And Grim agreed to get his scythe back. And out of spite Grim cut off Jack's head and he replaced it with a pumpkin!

Hey, so I know it's past Halloween now and this isn't really a Halloween tradition, but it's definitely a Halloween symbol, the scarecrow. I'd love to know what the scarecrow's origins are. I've loved scarecrows ever since I saw Disney's miniseries "Doctor Syn, alias the Scarecrow" or "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh," and of course other notable scarecrows such as Dorothy's friend from Wizard of Oz and the Batman supervillain. (Seriously, Doctor Syn's Scarecrow costume looks awesome, look it up.) If you could please cover that, I would greatly appreciate it. 🤗

this does make more clearer sense as to jacks background BUT how did jack forget who or what he is as a immortal ageless like being would it cause him to forget...hes' known from england and france but thats odd as england and france is more modern then the timeline of how jack lantern came to be and his clothes are a more modern too...then agian who knows. good concept

The best carving I did was last year, I made two dragons that had different glow. The wings a dim glow but the eyes and lines a bright glow, my sweetheart said they look like they are flying off the pumpkin. 😁

These tales remind me of The Soldier and Death (version from the Jim Henson series). A soldier tricks demons and eventually ends up capturing Death in a magic sack. When he releases Death, he can't die because Death avoids him and neither Heaven nor Hell will accept him.

So if he's immortal, then The Devil's evil would kinda still live on depending if he tricks anyone else immortal. Like maybe Pokey Minch? (It's a joke). It's really wise to not deal with the devil.
