Dunno, I've seen like a few accidental clips which included that XQC guy and, so far, he just seems to me like the Zoomer version of some regular centrist dude. It's just that with the generations the "I just want to grill" turned into "Whatever, dude, I just want to watch some random shit on the Internet (while it's streamed to thousands of people)". I don't really see the appeal of actually watching such a guy for hours, but considering how many other much worse people you could be watching instead, this seems like a decently respectable position to me.

@@aopt471 I disagree. He is a good FPS player, but still quite simple minded. The ”harm reduction” point doesn’t make sense for another reason too. Just because one guy benefits, doesn’t mean they all will. It’s like saying because I punched you, and you met your future wife at the hospital, that it’s okay to punch people. The positive result is a _lucky_ outcome, not the explicit or even intended one. They’re pushing the positive/neutral angle as a _defence for themselves_ not as the explicit goal for the person they’re freebooting.

The whole Jontron segment at the end of the video was interesting considering Jon had the exact inverse of what dev talked about with creators devolving into lazy content. The fact that Jon left doing easy let’s play videos to make highly produced content that required a lot of time and effort is not only commendable, but it also paid off for him in the long run since he’s arguably bigger than ever. The great thing about the sword community is that it’s such a practical hobby the reply videos are almost always based around a physical demonstration of why the original video is inaccurate. “This sword is rubbish it can’t do this.” - “Yes it can, watch me!” It naturally lends itself to transformative conversation, but professional Reactors just play random videos they have no insight or knowledge of, and can only say “wow guys” “that’s right” because they have not prepared anything to add to the conversation.

There's a fine line between a commentary channel and a react channel. JonTron throwing shade at Game Grumps in an only semi-jokey way while on Game Grumps is really funny. And what's extra relevant is that apparently the Game Grumps channel has a somewhat regular segment reacting to their own videos (don't follow them any more but I remember seeing some of those in my feed from time to time).

One reaction channel I really like is Vlogging Through History. He’s a historian who reacts to history content and adds his own points, or points out things that the creator didn’t mention, and fact checks, that sort of thing. Consent after-the-fact or saying that monetary benefit trumps consent partially misses the point, assuming the use isn't transformative. If someone can use my work without asking for permission, or just "pay" me afterwards, still shows that society doesn't respect my property rights. Why should I make content in that case?
@RobertMorgan
@RobertMorgan 10 ай бұрын
I feel the only reason to make content is if you have something to give away to public domain. If you profit, perish. I miss old school pre Google KZbin when it was about content rather than cash. Get 10 million views, the payment was you got 10 million more people that zero to see your views, that's worth Billions. You have to have a message worth that, and I'll watch it for free or steal it, or not at all. How the fuck did we get to where we're paying for digital content? It was never like this in the past. Knowledge needs to be free. Now, I'd happily pay for actual costs, but not for time. If KZbin started charging creators for bandwidth they'd all be gone in a month. This video alone would cost Dev tens of thousands to host for a month. The monetizing used to be the free hosting, it was the only place.

They chose the medium, it doesn't give them the right to take something they haven't worked on, without permission. None of this is difficult to understand, they're obviously just playing dumb, until the "meta" ends, like it's some sort of game. Grey opted to file a strike. No contact, no please stop, no dialogue; just instant Nuke Button. He filed a second when VTH challenged it and compared him to Hassan. Needless to say, coupled with him clamping down on who can comment, CGP Grey has lost a few subs over it.

To me there's a pretty simple solution, which is to treat it the same way they treat movie reactions. Guys who react to movies would never be crazy enough to just show the whole thing, they either edit their reaction or tell their audience to watch the movie on their own device while listening to the audio commentary. Just link to the youtube video and tell the audience to watch along. Literally open that shit on another tab and you get the same experience while also ensuring the original creator gets views.

A good middle ground based on the third argument of boosting the original creator's views is notifying the OC's during a stream, rather than having them find out afterward. Even if xQc or any other react streamers are halfway through the video, the OC's should have the right to either ask for a percentage of the revenue from superchats, or even tell the streamer to stop stealing their content. Whatever happened to the common human decency of asking before borrowing?

I feel like it would be a good idea for platforms to develop a "joint view" feature, wherein you can put in the link to a video you're reacting to and have the platform automatically count all views on your upload as views on the original video, and add them to that video's view count. This would obviously be a difficult thing to implement on Twitch, but it should be a simple thing for KZbin to do.

Any content creator can ask a streamer to no longer stream their videos, and they have to respect that in the future. 2. The revenue of any VOD uploaded on the same platform where the content creator is goes to the content creator. I think that would make sense because it is very true that the market is not the same on Twitch and on KZbin

There could be many creators who aren't happy with twitch reactbros but they aren't prepared to start shit with them, so they act cool because appeasing reactors' audiences and hoping you'll be" paid in exposure" is their next best option. It's pretty obvious at this point that if you dare criticize Hasan in any way, he's gonna call you mad, drama whoring and alt-right because you are friend of a friend of a friend of a friend of Sargon.

I think that one point that seems to remain largely unadressed in this whole debacle is the total market impact of react streams. Specifically on KZbin, react streamers are a strain on the whole platform. Reactors are able to produce videos at a much faster rate than original content creators, by piggybacking of original videos by the dozens in a single stream, allowing them and their fans to upload dozens of more clips, which then recieve impressions that would have otherwise gone to an actual content creator. By usurping impressions they can eventually hope to win over the youtube algorithm, further increasing their sway on the market as a whole. I highly reccomend DarkViperAU's videos on the subject (kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6POaZtmlt1ol7s) as it seems he is the only one who has thoroughly laid out why this is such a big problem.
@TheDefectiveAI
@TheDefectiveAI 10 ай бұрын
Two ways you could make this work out so everyone wins. Organically: React channel viewers have the decorum to watch the videos either before or after watching a reactor’s reaction. Mechanically: KZbin setting it up so react channels can tie their views into the original video and/ or partner with twitch to do the same function. If either was implemented then react channels would become the ideal signal boost and people would hate them less. However, both unlikely as it would require either for the cast majority of people to care enough to do more than they wanted to (good luck with that), or for KZbin and/ or twitch to add a helpful function to their system.

One person who I think does reacts content really well is Asmongold. Firstly, the man can turn a 10 minute video into an hour long react video and his stream viewers constantly make fun of him for it. As well, it seems like more than half the time he actively chooses channels or videos that are not super well known and there is a correlation that if you make quality content in WoW but just haven't hit that critical mass having him react to you will usually cause that start. Thirdly one thing that he does is actively subscribes to the channel and tells his followers to do the same while actively choosing to not skip the ads that the person has. I really think it just comes down to how much of an effort you put into transforming the content I would say around half or more of the length of the videos probably the correct amount of time but again it's the case by case basis

i love lemmino's videos. my favorite by far is the jack the ripper video, i must've watched that video at least 20 times by now. no matter how many times i watch it, i'll always be entertained even though i know what happens. but i wouldnt be able to sit 5 minutes when watching someone else watch it.

Asmongold is a good react streamer. He does his own commentary usually knows he can play it by the original creator and generally gets that channel a good bit of viewers

Anytime I see Hasan leave the room with the camera running, I remember that time T. Pool and co had to evacuate the building and left the camera running, and the live watchers skyrocketed because everyone was waiting to see what had happened, maybe even hoping to see an explosion or a masked gunman burst in. It's like Hasan saw this event, didn't realize it was an anomaly driven by mystery and confusion, and made it part of his normal content.

My rule of thumb on fair use is to ask if there’s any point in going and consuming the original afterwards. If no, it probably wasn’t transformative enough, and it also kind of demonstrates why that’s a problem

The same thing happens with other artists. Blogs used to steal their photos, writing, etc and create collection blogs and got way more attention than the creators themselves.

Hasan wearing a 'Make the Rich Pay!' shirt. Takes pic, uploads. Gets back in his sports car and drives home to his multi-million dollar mansion.
