You can watch this sketch a hundred plus times... you know it's coming but, you start smiling "plugs...what size do you want...? 13 amp...!" And still we laugh, it must be me but so little comedy today gets me like this does.

This may be the best tv comedy sketch in the world ever! I bet many hours of work went into making just a few minutes of classic television comedy.

Most of time. Sometimes it comes as fast as the sketch itself takes to film, but usually it does require that much effort indeed.

I remember watching the two Ronnie's way back. Fond memories of mom and dad laughing so much at the sketches. (Me too). These guys were top of Thier trade no swearing no cynical jibes no nastyness.just pure innocent fun delivered with a skill few of today's comics would dream of. I appreciate the fact that times and values have moved on and changed. But does some comedy have to be so brutal. God bless you two guys you we're part of my life then and still are now.

I don’t think there are many shops nowadays where you can buy candles individually. Normally they are already in packs of 2 or more

Some of the bits are word for word theft from Abbott & Costello. The others are from the concepts, such as the few meanings of the words.. It’s classic Abbott & Costello routines.

"Bollocks" was not permitted to be spoken on TV or radio back then. That's why innuendo in comedy worked as well as it did. Ronnie Barker absolutely loved wordplay, you only have to look at his many Rev'd Spooner sketches, and the "Pismonunciation" skits, and his vicar of St. Cain and Abel with the sermon in rhyming slang. Barker's writing worked on assumed knowledge and not all-out crudeness, so in that sense it was intelligent comedy. And because of what wasn't allowed to be said on TV, a lot of the laughs could be raised by not saying anything at all, and letting the audience imagination do the work. It was all over their opening and closing segments too. One of my favourites was: RC: "The next sketch takes place in a ball-bearing factory, where I play a man who loses his bearings ..." (pause, then lots of audience laughter as the camera pans to RB) RB: "... and I play a man who loses his temper."
