Its fascinating how comedy has changed. In this, there was no bad language, no sex references.Just a clever scenario and good word play and its hilarious. Bravo to the 2 Ronnies, genious.

70s and 80s will always be the benchmark of entertainment unlike the recent times of now. The 2 Ronnies were a source of fun that never age but only get more popular, even after their sad passings. 2000s can't and will never match the quality of before no matter how it hard it may try!

@sidpheasant75852 жыл бұрын
Apart from being pretty funny (!), this sketch raises a surprisingly large number of real-life emotions and questions, which it is true to say the Ronnies do not explore QUITE as fully as they could, even as they are quite clever and gifted enough to evoke most of it viscerally, on and between the lines, by what they say and do. Is the host mean or in fact sad? Do we sympathise as we know the world ridicules and taunts him? Do we hope he will somehow find a modicum of joy? Do we try sympathy but realise he is beyond redemption as he is actually just mean and narrow and callous? When the guest makes at least a little effort to adapt to the impossible circumstances, do we praise and love him for going the extra mile? Do we delight when it seems for a moment that the guest has slightly warmed the host's heart? And how do things change when we realise with the punchline that the guest has repeatedly tried to redeem the host - his own brother, year after year, even though by now he must no it is a hopeless task he still keeps on trying! I must say I felt all those emotions and more from this, all the more so as I have never been the life and soul of the party, yet I do have a special kind of joy and love in me. I would say I have experience of people in both the host and guest categories we see here, and there is warmth for both of them in the predicament, even though the guest is the true hero - a kind of long-suffering saint. And yet, it is ONLY because Ronnie Corbett was who he was and Barker who he was, that there is a kind of balance between the two characters. In spite of everything, we try to warm to the character played by Corbett because that character has Corbett's warmth irrepressibly readiating out, in spite of everything. In turn, the Barker character is long-suffering and ostensibly innocent of any crime, yet has that slight aggressive, cruel and mocking edge to it that most of Barker's creations have - just enough for us to transfer (in spite of ourselves) some of the sympathy from the guest to the host. What all that means is that this was a meaningful sketch, capable of promoting both thoughts and emotions, prepared and performed in such a way as to fully utilise the charisma and talents and capabilities of those who made it a reality... I guess that's why it has both wit and meaning?! And will probably still be funny 1000 years from now.

Makes me think of the Mr Bean episode where he has a sad new year's eve party of only a couple of guests who abandon him before midnight.
@sidpheasant7585 Жыл бұрын
@@muskndusk Indeed, but do we care, or do we accept the misfit Bean (as a fallen angel) is beyond being saved? Does the Milk of human kindness and compassion flow in us as we look in on the scene? In fact, in the French-based "Holiday" film, Bean is "saved" as he reaches the sea at last... He has become happier, more normal, less unpleasant and objectionable during that film (even getting a kind of pseudo-family); and it is clear from the context in the movie that he is granted redemption!!!
@muskndusk Жыл бұрын
@@sidpheasant7585 I've never thought of Mr Bean as being unpleasant or objectionable, just lacking social skills. I've always felt a little sorry for him and seen him as a sad character rather than an unpleasant. I've never seen the film to which you refer; I'm glad he finds happiness and acceptance.
@sidpheasant7585 Жыл бұрын
@@muskndusk Interesting your level of sympathy/kindness/mercy! Bean could certainly be sly, and could plot against others, even if also innovative in achieving some goals. But some sympathy there was. The film is sweet and great, and a little bit "divine" in fact...

Boomers with Steph Beacham/Russ Abbot/Alison Steadman is superb. The Thick Of It was utterly brilliant but rude, admittedly. Not Going Out was very witty and Outnumbered was cleverly written. The Two Ronnies WERE sublime but there is still talent out there!

@@JontheBerean Of course there are no such words. I just happen to find humor in made-up words. The English language is rife with humor, and no one exploited that better than Messrs. Corbett and Barker, IMO. The clip that you linked to may not have been my kind of humor, and there are likely many who disagree with what makes me laugh, which is perfectly fine. There is no right or wrong in humor. It's all a matter of taste and opinion.
