I watched him in San Diego while he was here, I swear he did it with mirrors. He lives on the edge and you can only expect five innings from him, anything more than that is bonus. He's not worth the money once you really dig into his numbers. I will say this about him though, he's a really cool guy and a great interview. The fans in San Diego loved him for his personality but we're definitely not paying much attention to his actual numbers. In spite of his skill I think he was extremely lucky in 2023. Whoever signs him will regret it.

Snell has HUGE Question Marks. He's only even pitched 180 Innings Twice in his career of 8 years and his ERA+ has only been "Ace Level" twice...he won Cy Youngs in both those years...but 2 out of 8 years, with the remaining 6 having Total Innings either under 100 or just under 130 Innings. That's not a pitcher you Pay Top Dollar and Long Term. You have a 1 in 4 chance of a Cy Young, and 3 in 4 chance of him pitching less than 130 innings with a slightly above average ERA +.

Simple solution to this is to find a team in the league that isn't obsessed with pitch count and let the man continue to pitch past the 6th and guess what his innings pitched wil go up! And this is why I'm happy it's taken so long for the Boras agents to sign and I hope they don't get what they're asking for because it is always insane and massively overpaid, Snell wanting 200 million is insane for a guy who outside of the 2 Cy Young seasons hasn't been nearly a player worth 200 million dollars for the rest of his career, there was a rumor a few weeks ago that Bellinger was also looking for a 200 million dollar contract and a lot of baseball talk I've seen for some reason puts Montgomery near 200 million and it just doesn't make any sense given his history, players shouldn't get way overpaid because of a great year or one great postseason run but you just know Boras is using that to try and get teams to sign these 3 dudes to 200 million dollar contracts and it makes me so happy that no team has bit the bullet and I hope no one does, they need the teams more than the teams need them if they want to get paid, Snell and Montgomery shouldn't get any more than 125-150 million dollar contracts at most and Bellinger should settle for another prove it year before he even sniffs a long term deal.

I think, just like the Japanese players, there should be a "window" within which a player must sign, and if they don't sign before the deadline, and the "window closes", they should be required to return to their old team and accept the "qualifying offer" they turned down. With a deadline like this, negotiations would become more serious and more urgent, with no "holding out" indefinitely in the hope of more money or more years.

It's definitely been a boring off-season after the dodgers spent big. The next biggest news was the Sale/Grissom trade and that's not exactly a blockbuster trade. A washed up pitcher and a prospect that failed miserably last season with the multiple chances the braves tried to give him. He was horrible on defense with errors every time he was on the field and less than mediocre at the plate.

Because sports aren’t like normal people jobs. There’s too much money involved to basically use the honor system for multi million dollar salaries. Like what if a guy were to miss out on 750k because the ump straight up missed the call? Or god forbid you had multiple angel Hernandez games you’re talking potentially millions of dollars lost. It’s a cool idea tho and for college sports or minor league sports I could totally see having a more realistic chance of success just because there’s no where near as much cash as professional sports

I remember a few years ago a GM saying if he could he would sign every player on his team to a one year deal. With pitchers that statement in my opinion has the most meaning. Teams are looking at Blake and thinking their are to many variables to give him the contract that he wants. They are 100% correct if you watch him pitch, numbers don’t tell the whole story.

In 2023 Snell pitched 7 innings 3 times, not once. In those 3 games his line was: 21.0 5 1 1 9 31 0.43 Snell had the most walks last year and the best h/9. He is also one of the best at not giving up homeruns over his career at 0.9 per 9 ip. One of a handful.of players under 1.0 in the last 5 or 6 years.

So just looking at his traditional stats it seems as though Snell is one of two things: A Cy Young winner with MVP votes or "meh". At most I'd give him one year with perhaps a second year team option. Not giving him a lot for the likelihood of finding something else like it for cheaper. Pay one year for the potential, and if it's "meh" let him go. If he's tops again, I can get him for another year.

Snell is great. He’s a competitor. His walks have always been an “issue” but it’s mainly because he isn’t willing to just throw a ball to get him over. He’d rather give a walk, than to serve an easy strike to the hitter. Like you said, he doesn’t get hit too hard. He’s been able to pitch around the walks because his stuff is good. He’s got great playoff appearance. I still remember him dominating with the rays against LA when he was for some reason pulled by the manager. He’s a solid ace. Maybe a 2 for some teams but he’s definitely an ace for most.

Having just read the article on Tarik Skubal and the pitching mechanic changes he has embraced, looking at Snell makes you realize he doesn’t seem as driven to go get his delivery and mechanics worked on to drop the walks and increase the innings pitched. Why? Who knows, but he seems much less humble and hungry- not to mention he’s whiny. I think teams are not thrilled with his “make-up” at the end of the day. The Yankees offering a contract to snell is exactly what is wrong with this team. He’s a very similar player to Rodon and he proved to be a failure. They never learn from this and never suffer consequences because they have a huge payroll. And people still think they’re a top tier team even though the astros hit them harder than my dads belt. It’s also annoying because their fans ride on their championships where the Yankees won when their grandmas weren’t even born yet.

Last year, Snell tied Sandy Koufax's best season in H/9 with 5.8. That stat isn't one you hear about much since it's often converted to BAA (Batting Ave Against) but it shows just how filthy a pitcher's stuff is. Last year in that department, he's one of the best in history
@tommcconville677
@tommcconville677 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't even mention Snell in the same sentence as Sandy Koufax. He's had two, maybe 3 standout seasons, even with his Cy Young season last year. Except for Sandy's first two seasons in Brooklyn, and the first year in LA in a bandbox called the Coliseum, Sandy from 1959 to his last season in 1966 was the best pitcher in baseball. Led the league in wins, strikeouts and ERA multiple seasons. Snell has all of 81 wins in 9 years, he couldn't carry Sandy's jock. I give to credit to Cashman for walking away from this guy's contract demand.

@@tommcconville677 I've been watching baseball since about '77. I still think pitching was better pre-1990's. Pitchers knew how to pitch. They knew how to mix pitches and locate and keep hitters off balance. They lasted deep into games. Today's pitchers give up location and longevity for velocity. They throw their arms out of their sockets for that velocity and almost always have to get Tommy John surgery and can never pitch deep into games. If they lose that velocity, they lose all effectiveness. Noah Syndergaard is a good example. Who's your team? Mets fan here :) Peace!

@@frankanon4450 I am a solid true blue Yankee fan since 1958. I have seen Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra play at the old Yankee Stadium starting in 1960. At 73, I am not happy with how the game is played now, and how players today don't have complete skills, or can execute fundamentals. Like laying down a bunt to move a runner to second and third, or hitting behind a runner to.get a runner to second or third.

If I were Blake Snell, I would pick the team I prefer between the Dodgers and Braves and call them up and say "what's your best offer for 5 years? I'll take it!" because for me if nobody is going to overpay for me, id rather just go play where I would get to have fun and win. I don't know, obviously I have a different perspective, but for me making $50 million or $250 million is irrelevant, I'll have plenty of money either way so I would rather get to enjoy my super rare, super incredible opportunity to be a major league baseball player, and try to make it to the World Series at least once, and preferably win.
