The Americans hurriedly started to develop a tank that would later become the legendary and highly successful M4 Sherman medium tank.
In the meantime, however, both the Americans and the British desperately needed a stop-gap tank to match the current generation of German tanks.

@@dapperfield595 The BEF was defeated in Europe because they all deployed into Belgium where they were promptly cut off and surrounded. But the Matilda counterattack at Arras shocked the Germans because their antitank guns were useless against Matilda II armor. Rommel had to create an emergency defense with 88 flak guns to turn them back. In 1940 the British using 200 tanks and 36000 troops cut off 138000 Italians and bagged the lot, including 600 inferior Italian AFVs. England's early defeats were caused more by loyalty to reluctant allies than their equipment or tactics. Even a dozen Matildas could probably have saved Malaysia and Singapore.

@hagamapama
@hagamapama 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, most of Rommel's armored strength was PzIII which had issues penetrating a Lee from the front. Also the Grant was the first British tank with a true dual use gun, that 75mm could throw useful AP and powerful HE out of the same barrel. This caused havoc with Rommel's use of emplaced guns, which had been successful for the lack of such weapons. Now instead of waiting for artillery to clear the ground the tannks could just do it.

Shame was reached when it was brought to USSR in late version when 1)armor wasn't holding anything; 2)they've welded the side doors shut to "improve armor". Result was the infamous "coffin for 7 comrades" which was being penetrated by anything and was borderline impossible to escape from; 3)calling it medium tank so that soviets would use it alongside T-34 where M3 was constantly at disadvantage as tasks laid before it were expected from a superior tank. It's as if in this case americans had done it on purpose to help kill more soviets(yes, I literary mean it was better not to send M3 to USSR and give it to british, who had different tactical and operational use for it and instead send soviets Valentine's that were used as light infantry tanks instead of obsolete T-26).

As for M3, you should consider that Churchill tanks were first created as analogues to french Char B1bis and only in 1939 was designed majorly reworked for a more modern version. Then it was passed to Vauxhall and young engineers working on adapting it for production basically saved it by redesigning it further removing several other obsolete WWI features while they were preparing it for production. And even after all that it was still a tank with 40mm cannon in turret and 75mm howitzer in hull, there was also a version with reverse gun arrangements. So even for 1942 M3 wasn't THAT obsolete. It was a compromise, meanwhile brits were producing NEW tank with same drawbacks. US was actually never worse off then a third place in tank technology arms race. Video forgets to mention that 1)US had a LOT of prototypes and test vehicles build; 2)USSR and Germany had basically used resources other nations dedicated to their navies for land armies instead.

@karhedin
@karhedin 2 жыл бұрын
i believe you are talking about convoy PQ17. That convoy was forced to scatter when the tirpitz and multiple other german ship traveled north, seemingly to intercept. they didnt reached the convoy but many submarines were already waiting in the area. When the ship scattered to avoid the german warship, they became easy target for the submarines. During the massacre, there was indeed a case where a cargoship, having fled toward the north had to cross the submarine infested area to reach a russian harbour. They used the ship crane to lift some sherman tanks on the front deck (to make it have the outline of a destroyer at short to medium range) and used the white paint to improve the camouflage (to make it seem like an iceberg at long range) Destroyer had asdic, the ancestor of the sonar, they could detect submarine in given directions (early models had only front detection, late models included side detection) but the asdic detection range wasnt great (2km at start, 4km at best) so german submariner tended to stay away from a destroyer to avoid being detected and were reserving their torpedoes for cargoship.

I wish I could ignore that 37mm turret having an extra barrel down there........ugh
@happyflygon8096
@happyflygon8096 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, that isn't a barrel. That's a weight that's screwed onto the gun, and is vital for a stabilization system fitted to it. That being said, 99% of the lee and grants discarded this weight because A. literally nobody was taught how to properly use the stabilizers, as it was concidered too important and secret to risk it falling into enemy hands, and B. without the benefit of the stabilizers, the extra weight made vertical traverse take longer. This is also what the thing on the end of (some) of the pictures of the M3 is- this is a weight that was fitted to the 75mm M2 cannon for the same purpose of stabilization. Again, usually removed because no info on how to use it, and slower traverse. Some M3s were equipped with the 75mm M3 (seen on the Sherman), which could operate with the stabilizer without an extra weight, as it was better balanced than the 75mm M2 or the 37mm M6. ....Basically a long way of saying, that is techically a correct detail, just one that is VERY RARE to see. (also you can probably see all this info on stabilizers in the Chiefain's videos- I know the M2 75mm is mentioned in the grant video, I don't remember if the weight for the M6 is mentioned in that video or in one of the other videos involving that cannon)
