The ULTIMATE COMPOUND for restoring FADED PAINT *Day In The Bay

We're back with another Day in the Bay!
Today's challenge was to restore this Mk3 Volkswagen VR6's pink, faded and damaged paint to the luscious glossy red hidden beneath.
Red paint is renowned for fading. The UV rays hit the paint causing a faded/pink coloured illusion looking like it's destined for the paint shop. Using our hero product, the Ultimate Compound we can use both methods of hand application and Duel Action Polishing to restore the paint to it's glossy red.
Ultimate Compound contains paint cleaners within its formula to help restore faded red paint.

I used the ultimate compound on my daughter's faded 2002 chilli red mini Cooper with a Halfords DA polisher. Outstanding results, as was able to remove some scuffs and polishing swirls / marring and restored the depth of colour. Finished off with Meg's 3in1 wax and achieved an eye-popping shine. Took me a day to do - but that's what dad's are for eh?

Hey, I used the ultimate compound and ultimate polish today but didn't do all of it on one day. Time wasn't enough. How long does this effect last? Will it fade again in a year ?

@@pufkishaa if you put a wax or a sealant on it won't fade. the reason paint fades over Time is the lack of UV inhibitors and a quality sealant puts those on the paint and protects it.

The reason why red fades the most is due to the wavelength of the color. When you are seeing red it is the sunlight whose wavelength is red being reflected back at you which means that all other colors get absorbed and not reflected. Red is the farthest away from UV wavelengths so it gets hammered with them and absorbs them so the UV inhibitors in the clear coat take a bigger beating. Just wanted to put this out as that is the main reason why red cars fade the most.

If it is that faded, it does not have clearcoat...wich you can clearly see on the residue on the used pads… With clearcoated reds the problem is not even remotely as big. And if they are faded underneath the clear you are obviously in for a respray..

I bought a car recently with 4 big keys scratches down the door. After filling, spraying and sanding back ect I used that Maguires compound to get the shine and it worked a treat. Done it all by hand which took a while but still gave me a great result, definitely worth £9 a bottle.

Nice!! My needs that I’ll be buying 2 of these because it’s oxidized paint so this will bring it back, at first I was worried that I have to pay expensive fresh paint but this will helps me a lot! Update: at first try and omg,wow this product really works!! Meg's I find. Is very easy to use. And very little clean up compared to some others out there that I've used. Same goes with the commercial stuff out there for dealerships, car washes, detailers. Meguiar's Ultimate Compound on stage-1 paint is just killer. I restored a red 30 year old Mazda Miata convertible this past summer. Did a very methodical Compound with a DA polisher. Alcohol rub down. Followed with a coat of TW Seal&Shine with a 3 hour cure followed with a coat of Meguiar's Gold Class Carnuba. Damn it looked good. I too did not follow with polish as the Compound cleaned up so well in the single stage paint. After 30 years of less then proper maintenance, I told the client that "I took what I could and left what I should..."

Found a car for sale last week 2003 Suzuki Wagon R+ (don't judge me, my first car). PINK. All over. I Watched your video plus lots of other YT tutorials and bought it the next day for £300. It was so filthy inside I couldn't see my hope from underneath dirt, grime, dog hair, dust, mud and candy wrappers. 😂 Anyway, day 3 with microfibers, clay bar, compound and pads on my Makita and half of the car is already ass shiny, deep red beauty! To maintain it I'm planning to go for all Meguirs product as after cleaning in and out it turned out absolutely stunning little car in great condition. My neighbor said "good luck" and laugh viciously when he saw this car in the first day. I guess he will stop talking to me now. 😄

I restored a oxidized car also red. The compound worked great and I sealed it with a wax compound from another company, the waterless spray worked better in the video then on the project I was working on. Also I used the McGuire's rim cleaner that was super.

I hardly ever rave about a product, but I was blown away by ultimate compound. I've got an eleven year old silver Audi, paintwork looked pretty good (at least that's what I thought at the time), one pass with compound and it's like night and day, it was possible to see a clear line between treated and untreated where the sun had dulled the clearcoat. I would love to have the opportunity to revive a really ratty paintjob at some time :)

Tried it today, the surface of my tank was always clean but the paint underneath just looked faded, there is a bit under the seat that the sun couldn't get to and that looks much darker and newer, I was hoping I could get it close to that but it really made no difference whatsoever apart from maybe giving it a bit more shine. I took some pictures I might make a slide video later but all in all it was a waste of money... that doesn't mean it will be for anyone else, I don't know. I don't think Halfords would give me a refund now that I used a few drops.

What an amazing video! May I ask what that machine polisher is please? I have a narrowboat I’d love to try that compound on. Would you class blue as a “dark” colour which would need polish or the wax you used?

This video convinced me to try it on my 2000 Honda Logo with red single stage paint. The paint is a bit faded, like very dark pink-red, but not by far as oxidized as the VW in this vid. So I rinsed the car and used PoorBoys'World STRIP DOWN to remove ANY old wax or coatings, then washed the car by hand in a DIY wash box at a carwash, dried it, drove home, clayed the entire car, then removed any lube oils with an ipa panel wipe. I noticed that the strip down had been kinda aggressive on some parts of the hood, where i could see dried stains that have even turned vaguely white, so watch out with that stuff. But for the rest, the car was squeaky clean, so nothing would stand the Meg UC in it's way. The result is good: all swirls are gone and it has a good shine, but i'm very dissappointed in the level of red restoration: The Meguiars even coat MF pad, a "Liquid Elements" medium pad, or even a hard cutting pad on a DA did not gave a red transfer, only white-pinkish. And i know the original colour of the car is far more red, it's visible on the edges of each panel, the inside of the doors, on the inside at the fuel tank entry, etc. I know each car may need a different approach, but the Meg Ultimate Compound wasn't strong enough for my situation. It was my fault to completely rely on this vid, and only having the Meg UC in preparation for the excercise. I should have invested in other cutting compounds and have them at the ready as well, so i could trial and error my way to a true red restore.

I'll be using this on the plastic fender flares on my 2004 Jeep Liberty Renegade, she is cactus green and the tops of the fender flares have oxidized and faded, the rest of the Jeep still looks good at 15 years old.

I have a Red Vauxhall Insignia....it's 2 stage so not fading etc and fairly well looked after, do you think a carnuba based wax is still the way to go? I have been using Megs NXT on it, with superb results, but if a Carnuba based wax is better suited, i'll switch.

The wax products have a guide on how to use them. Usually let it dry for 3-5 minutes and buff off with a microfiber towel. Remember to not apply it in the sun
