Hey there! I work at an independent dr martens store. General rule of thumb for finding the perfect sizing in docs is having about a cm at the front of the shoe from the end of your toes to the front of the shoe, and you should be able to fit an index finger snugly down the back of the shoe when your foot is pushed all the way forward. It should be snug in the width, but not super tight. If the length is perfect, but the width is too tight, get them stretched, do not go down a size! If you have the opposite problem and width is too loose, put in an insole (I would recommend the classic dr martens insoles!). If there’s a lot of room at the top of your foot, an inner sole would work too. If it’s too tight on top of your foot, getting it stretched will fix the problem again. Do not get boots or shoes where your toes are touching the end. Your toes will really hurt at the end of the day, and it can cause all sorts of problems like ingrown toenails. (Trust me, I’ve done it!) I hope this helps! :-)

Thank you so much for this helpful video 😊 I 100% agree with your argumentations about those confusing sizes 🤣 I’m a 39 (uk 6) and I find myself buying smaller on the classic drmartens boot, my regular size on the shorter ones (e.g. polley), my regular size on the chelsea boots (because of the narrow neck) and my regular size on the 1B60 (20eye). I haven’t bought Jadon or Sinclair yet, so I was really interested in this wonderfully made video ☺️

Your welcome Remu Chan! That makes a lot of sense with the classic ones being a roomy fit, the polleys being narrow, chelsea boots for the neck and 1B60 for fitting up the leg! This is a super helpful comment for anyone planning on buying those styles! I would say the Jadon is more narrow so you may just be your regular size for those and can't comment on the sinclair's sizing yet!

I'm glad I just found this video! Last month I purchased my first pair of Dr. Martens. I bought the 1460 Vonda Mono boots in my usual size US 8. I immediately noticed that the right boot's tongue seam was very tight and dug into my skin. I heard it's a common issue with some people, but I don't have that issue with the left boot. My heels wiggle around in the boots, so I bought a couple of insoles. I got some wonder balsam, put 3 insoles in the right boot, stuffed it with a tennis ball, and got adhesive moleskin! Now that seam is less tight! I have to wear two insoles and thick socks to stop my heels from wiggling. Ankle gels could work,,, My feet are a bit wide but a little short. I'm not sure if I should have sized down, but oh well... I'm making them work!

I bought two pair of 1460 Bex from Amazon. Is your toe at the end of the boot? I’m still trying to figure out which ones to keep. I wear a 7.5. The 7s seem really large I can fit a finger down the back of my heel. But the 6s are pretty tight. I don’t know if I should keep them and break them in or keep the larger ones. 😢

Wow is really useful your video thank you , but I have a question so you are 25.4 cm and basically you are size 7 , but in DC martens are you using a smaller size that is 6 right ? Cause I bought a pair of DC martens bex model and I'm 24.5 cm that is 6 but was too big and I bought size 5 but literally kill my heels with blisters. sneakers for instance don't have that issue, models of a same brand can have half a size (or in rare cases a full size) difference between them. but never 2 whole sizes lol

I have a pair of normal doc marten boots that I bought in person sized down with the sale assistants help and they are definitely the right size. But want to buy a pair of Devon boots (shorter boots with flower buckles) curious are docs consistent across sizes. Do not want to order online and they are wrong.

That's really helpful of you to measure all those DM insoles, I'm sure it'll help a lot of people figure out the right size. FYI, if your leather shoes are too tight in the toes/length, you can take them to a cobbler and they can stretch them lengthwise with tools and equipment that most people don't have, and get you a few more mm, so if they're almost the right size, all hope is not lost. The last shape does matter, because I got the 1490s in both the Vintage made in England, and the regular 1490s made in Asia. The Vintage one's fit me perfectly snug, just how I like them, where as the regular ones are a little roomy... the toe box in the regular ones are taller and wider, so that's something to consider, but I also have low volume skinny feet, so the slightly tighter toe box on the vintage one's works really well for me, but an insole in the regular docs would fix the issue no problem. Just for reference, I'm a 6.5US mens, and I got the 6US/5UK in both the vintage and regular docs, so I went a half size down and it was perfect for me in the vintage... if I had higher volume feet, the regular one's may have fit me better. Another consideration is, the brand Solovair makes almost identical shoes and boots to Dr. Marten, because their company Solovair were actually licensed to make Docs back in the 80s and 90s, and when Dr Martens changed factories, Solovair just kept making them in the original Dr. Martens factory. The benefit with Solovair in terms of sizing is they come in half sizes. They are also all made in England, all have shanks in them which help with support, and the rubbler soles are made with a tougher rubber, so don't wear out as fast, and they can be resoled much easier... the leather is supposed to be better quality too, so there are quite a few pros to them, but when they don't have is the iconic yellow stitching and the Dr. Martens name, but they are true authentic DMs in the sense that they are making practically the same type and quality that Dr. Martens were in the 80s and 90s. I love my DMs, I still have the first pair I got as a teen back in 1994, which I still wear, and I have a couple more pairs of newer boots, but I'm seriously giving thought to trying the Solovairs for their various pros.

I didn't know about that brand and that's such a good information. Today I received a pair of Addina Martens shoes, which are wonderful but I need a half size less cause the heel sleeps. I'm going to try an insole, but I'm afraid it will not be enough. And I'm thinking I will do better returning it. I remember to have several Marten boots from the 90's, all were given to me by my cousin that already wear it, and they lasted so much. I also bought a pair of old oxfords made in england they have left in a local store, those were old and a perfect 35'5 size for me. Literally wear to work 12h for 10 years and the soles ares still perfect but the leather finally gave up. Those old Martens were great quality. And i was so glad to have the half size.

Hey! I usually wear Nike Air Force etc. in 46. Now I tried 1460 Bex in 45 and 46. The 45 are soo tight in the front because my toes are wide. 46 fits perfecly lengthwise but there is so much space around the ankle even with thick socks. What would you recommend? Hope that after breaking in the 45 are not hurting my toes anymore or rather take 46? Thank you😊

I got a pair of mary janes in a size down from my regular size but they are tight in the front and my feet touch the front but when I tried on my normal size, they were lose and I slide out of them more. I'm having a hard time deciding whether I should try to work with too tight or return them and try to work with too lose... idk what to do..

I’m usually a size 6 in other shoes and I tried on different docs in store and a size 5 fit me the best without my foot slipping out except the tops of my feet really hurt and it’s a really tight fit on the top of my foot. I feel like a 5.5 would’ve been perfect but they don’t make half sizes. It’s also really hard to get the shoe on but I have a comfortable amount of space for my toes so I don’t know if I should return them for a size 6 or just stretch these. I can’t fit my feet into them with thick socks. It’s already a struggle with thin socks

The shop sent me the wrong size (size 5) when I first ordered it so I got to try it on but yeah like you said, they’re just way too tight and when I finally got sent the right size which is size 6, they keep slipping out 😭 so did you exchange yours or just settle with size 5?

Hmmm maybe the pascals could be closest shape size from my personal opinion but sometimes pascals are a lot softer leather and the jadons are a lot more stiff so keep that in mind. If you try 1460s just keep in mind the Jadons are a bit more narrow and tighter… hope that helps!

I'm an EU size 40 (US 8.5) and I opted for a US size 9 (EU 41) since they didn't have half sizes available for international buyers and I thought it would be better for them to have a little room than for them to give me foot problems by going for the US size 8 (EU 39). I got the Audrick 3i white stitch platform boots and boy, are they huge. I'm pretty sure an EU 39 would have been too tight, so I'm very upset I can't get the proper size. Still contemplating if I should get insoles or return them :(

Hello everybody, first of all thank you for your amazing video, you really helped me a lot with the sizing thing, i didn't know that the australian docs page had all that info! I would like to share my experience, in 2016 i bought a 8US-7UK 1460 nappa leather(59 LAST), which after breaking in felt really big so i knew that they were not my size but i put a insole in and they fit perfect. Recently i set my eye in the 1461 gaucho(261 & 262 LAST) so i went to the store and tried a 8US-7UK pair first which was really big at top and there was some serious heel slipping, and then i tried on a 7US-6UK pair which in that moment i felt it was too tight around the bridge part so i gave up. After a few days searching on the internet i found out that there are 2 MIDDLE SIZES which are 7.5US-6.5UK and 10.5US-9.5UK so i bought them in the 7.5US size since i thought that they would fit perfect. When they arrived at my house i tried them on and i could see that they were not as painful as i tought they would be and the fit was ok but i have some heel slippage in my right foot(from 1-10 i would say 4) so i was wondering why, if they should have fit perfect, so i compared them to my 1460 nappa and i could see that even when my 1460 were a bigger size(7UK) the 1461 gaucho have a roomier top and it is noticeable, and after watching your video i understand why, the 1461 gaucho fit in the 261 &262 LAST according to the australian docs webpage, and i you compare the 59 LAST length in 7UK size with the 261&262 LAST in 6UK size you can see that they are similar, there is a minimal difference in length proving that i should probably go for the 6 UK size and not the 6.5UK which i thought would be correct. To sum up i think that in most of the cases to choose your right size you can do this, if you are a 8US for example, and you want to buy any model mentioned in the 59LAST section, go half a size down(if you can because there is only 2 middle sizes available only in the UK) if not DO NOT GO A FULL SIZE DOWN, you better get your normal size in this case a 8US-7UK and put some insole in them(i said this because i get the perfect fit doing this) ; if you want to go for any model in the 261&262LAST GO A FULL SIZE DOWN, because there is enough lenght to do this in these models since they are bigger . Hope that this helps anybody who is uncertain about which size to get , you can find all the info in the description of this video

I wear a size 9.5 in US shoes but have a pair of Docs 3989 Black Brogue wingtip Oxford with steel toe in Men’s US 7, EUR 39, UK 6. My feet were measured for that size when I purchased them in 1994 and still wear them today. The suggestion of having a cm of room between toes and front of shoes is a good rule to follow. Have you tried heel inserts? Like things that stick at the back of the heel or gel heel guards that go around your heel and foot. That should fill them up more and reduce the slippage!

Hello, Im planning on getting the 1460s pascal Virginia leather boots. I'm usually a size 8 1/2 in converse, gym shoes ect. I'm stuck because multiple sources are saying to size down to an 8 or size up to a 9. I have skinny feet but my toes are kind of long. Hey! The originals (1460) can be pretty roomy! I advise wearing an inner sole to fill them up a little bit. Going down a size can work but may cramp your toes if you aren’t careful!

Hmm my sole is measured 26 cm to 8.6 and is size 39 so your soles aren't the original but they are the replacement to the original so don't advise to use that as reference.

Hey! Yeah all the boots vary a little so I went with the extra inner sole because they are made to fit in most docs which means your feet should fit in most docs too! The originals are a little more roomy than say the Jadons so I wanted a fair estimate for people who are confused 👍

@@inthewanderyears yes you did well . to be honest difference isn't too much . i went size down and and seems to be the size . so i am finally after two years or buying pair being wrong buying second being wring finally 3th is the jackpot and i got pascal virginias now . its lets say the beginner friendly docs haha

If it can be helpful, I'm usually a size 6-6,5 uk size (39-40 eu, 8-8,5 usa) and Sinclairs especially are wider in the toe box, also slightly longer. I could size down to a 6, but with an insole I am able to size up to a 6,5 with no problems of tightness!

Full of mistakes and wrong information. 59 last not 95. 1461 are unisex. The shape varies not the size, volume and proportions change based on the type of last (mold) used to form the profile of the shoe upper, hence different models will not fit all foot shapes regardless of size. Foot shape is not gender based as you constantly refer. The insoles do not fit into all Dr Martens shoes, most now manufactured with memory foam insole glued in. Made in England 1461 (my preferred) still have all leather insole but it is not removeable, attempting to remove any glued in insole can damage the shoe or leave glue which alters the footbed and comfort, that's a job for a cobbler if you need to alter shoes. Freezing shoes to stretch does not do anything, the leather will go solid before the water, the water will simply freeze in the shape of the shoe. That's just ridiculous. You failed to mention the recommended way to make shoes more comfortable if slightly tight or stiff, rub Dubbin (leather balm) into leather and wear around the house to break in. and that is just for staters. You also fail to mention that the shape of feet vary so much that many are simply not suited to Docs. Shape of bones in the foot as well as the relative volume of feet are measurements that determine not only the size of shoe required but width. design and ultimately brand. High arches, narrow or broad feet, ankle bone proportions add complexity, orthotics and shoes that take them should be considered by people who find it difficult to find shoes that fit. Wearing ill fitting shoes can damage your feet. I am fortunate, 12 pairs of Docs, no problems with fit. Docs with stiff leather require some breaking in, but they should never be uncomfortably tight or loose where the foot slips around. Some do come in half sizes but just don't buy them if they don't fit. As shoes stretch a very thin insole can be useful, and help fill some volume if you feel your shoes are half size to big. I recommend Pedag insoles, ultra thin all leather (which is what I use) through to cushioning types (memory foam, etc), don't get the Docs insoles, they are uncomfortable and only suitable for removable insoles. They raise the entire foot too much and not a universal fix as a result.

If your feet measure 24.5cm, should you go for UK 5 or 6 in the 1460s?🥲 I don't want to import the wrong size I have a pair of 1914s in UK 5 but the ankles always hurt, do they just need to be broken in more?
