Enjoy these videos very much, yourself & Simon D'entrémont (sp) have a great wealth of knowledge on topics I didnt know I'd find so interesting and very useful. I've learnt a lot of "KZbin photographers" don't really understand what they're trying to explain, ISO being a popular misinformed setting. Thank you for your time and expert knowledge! Looking forward to the next video. Cheers

Excellent! Camera sensors have dynamic range for the primary additive colors of Red, Green, Blue (RGB). 8-bit files such as jpeg have a possible dynamic range of 0 to 255 for each RGB value. 16-bit RAW files have a possible dynamic range of 0 to 65,535 for each RGB value.

Really great to see the different RAW editors colour profiles. I was hoping, after talking about Fuji and Capture One, that your comparisons would include Capture One.

Thanks Pete. I don't use Capture One, so unfortunately I couldn't include it. Thanks for watching.

A very nice explanation and examples of RAW file nuances - nicely done! One slight correction - not all mirrorless cameras have a shutter (eg. Nikon Z8/Z9, and I'm sure others will follow).
@WalksOnTheWildSide
@WalksOnTheWildSide Жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. You're right, the Z8 and Z9 don't have mechanical shutters, but I'm not so sure that others will follow. I believe that most flashes don't work with these cameras and you can only use a couple of native Nikon flash units. But also, and more importantly, it won't even use those flashes in silent mode. You have to eanble the shutter sound for the flash to work. But for me, low light would be the biggest issue. Mirrorless cameras handle low light situations so much better when using the mechanical shutter. Interestingly Sony has gone the other way. The recent Sony cameras now lower the mechanical shutter whenever the lens is detatched to protect the sensor from dust. It will be interesting to see how the two approaches play out in the market.

@@WalksOnTheWildSide I agree - it will be interesting to see how things play out. With the Sony A9 iii disrupting the technological field with it's amazing global shutter, that might push more an more higher end bodies to be shutterless. With regards to the flash situation with Nikon, so far I haven't had any issues with 3rd party flashes on both bodies - but I think some have. And I can also shoot without any shutter noise ("Silent Mode" is really more like "Discreet Mode"). You can still turn off all sounds when silent mode is turned off.

Very interesting video, thank you. I am looking forward to the other video's about file types. I have found the click count of my OM-1 camera, using a method I found on the internet. I don't understand why it has to be so deeply hidden, while it must be possible to make this just as easy as finding other things in the menue.

Glad it was interesting. And I agree about the shutter count. It should be easier. With many camera systems it’s not even possible to see it in camera. Thanks for watching.

Excellent video, with a lot of great information! Your videos are always so informative. You said that JPEG are 8 bits per color channel, “which gives you a total of 256 pieces of information or levels of color per pixel.” Shouldn’t that be be 256 pieces of information per pixel color channel (8 bit), or 16 billion pieces of color information (24 bit) per pixel? Or should that be 256 levels of gray (from black to white) per pixel?
@barneylaurance1865
@barneylaurance1865 Жыл бұрын
Really it should be 8 pieces of information per colour channel. A bit is a "piece of information". One bit or one piece of information is enough to distinguish between two possibilities, 8 bits is enough to distinguish between 256 possibilities. 24 bits is enough to distributing between about 16.8 million possibilities.

Cheers David. Glad it’s useful. On the bits I didn’t cover it in much detail here and the next video goes in to it a lot more. Each colour channel can have 2^8 shades (256). Or 2^8^3 (c.16.8m) colours per pixel. But don’t worry, the next video covers it fully. Thanks for watching.
