Your vulnerability today in your vlog is allowing me to share this: I'm a mature woman, and I'm clinically depressed. Not looking for empathy, merely stating a fact. I'm walking through oatmeal these days and glimmers of positivity and light are few and far between. Your vids, dear Ms. Winkler are one of those rare gleams of illumination. Your upbeat, quirky personality, packaged together with intelligence, interesting themes, and hilarious references and anecdotes, presented in a beautiful, classy, articulate girl, gives me a brief respite from this cold, dull world. I'm grateful and appreciative of that elegant, cheery facade 😇 I wish you nothing but warmth and light, (and dark wood), high spirits and peace. You're very deserving, and you too, are powerful! *Much respect, young lady.* Don't EVER let yourself think you aren't out here, making a difference! "Sometimes I just cry. You know what I love about this video (I'm at minute 9), is that all those guides and the concept of a north star can be so easily applied to other aspects of life. Clothing style, weekend plans, which friends to hang out with, what hobbies to spend time and money on, what creators to follow, which side hustle to focus on. That's maybe why my whole life looks like it was designed by a panicked squirrel and why none of the pieces fit together.

After going through your Pinterest board I realized that I just never want to be far from some depiction of nature. Botanicals, fruits, animals, insects, whatever, I just never want to not see one of those things. My eyes just drifted towards those things only. I'm also pro-durability because I don't want to be tiptoeing around my life over precious fragile things. It's why I use cast iron over non-stick coated pans. And coziness is of utmost importance because I'm a sensitive person and home needs to serve the function of lowering my stress levels. I like traditional furniture shapes, nothing super modern or blobby. So... Natural Traditional Durable Cozy? And Artistic, of course, because art is vital. It makes sense why I love watching you for inspiration!

From this (minimal and monochromatic) to that (rich colors, fabrics, and layering) are all dependent on the seasons. I’m in Summer now. I even took the curtains and rods down. Roll up the rugs, take art off the wall. MINIMAL! I need to feel like I can breathe in the heat. In the winter, I’m all about the cozy vibes. !

Which is also such important nuance that is currently lacking. We want to really pin down our style and it has to be "us" in a permanent neverchanging way which puts a lot of pressure on our purchases and keeps us from buying stuff that gives us joy because "we won't like it every day". But houses like our wardrobes can change with seasons. I want all the sun and breeziness in summer, and all the halloween and christmas decor in the ber months and all the flowers in spring. It's good to have a seasonal box you can get out and fall in love with again! Variety is fun❤️

I would just add one other thing…..don’t buy brand new furniture, especially trendy stuff from [insert brand name here]. Buy stuff off of Marketplace, thrift stores, or yard sales. Or even the throw-away stuff left over from a yard sale. My house doesn’t look like anyone else’s house. I can’t think of one brand new piece of furniture in my house. Virtually everything came from one of the places I mentioned and everyone who walks inside our home comments on how beautiful it is. And if I decide I don’t like something, I give it to a friend, donate it, or sell it on Marketplace. Even at a “financial loss,” I don’t feel bad about it because I am not going to spend the next 6 months finishing paying for it. Sending you love and hugs. Start by decorating one of your children's rooms. If you haven't already done so, don't miss out on the fun and joy of decorating your own child's room. They'll delight in whatever you do, there are no rules other than safety first, and you can let your creativity and imagination run wild! The biggest challenge will be the time it takes to paint the walls and air the room out, so set up a "fun" temporary bed for your child in another room. Ask your partner or a creative friend to help you paint over a weekend to minimise time and upheaval, while someone else helps out with the kids. You could even just paint or wallpaper one feature wall. The rest of the decor eg. soft furnishings, pictures etc can be added little by little as time and budget allows. Being a Mom of small children is exhausting I know, but being in the creative headspace of planning it will inspire you even though it will require some time and energy to complete it. Have fun with it!

Very particular story is when you mentioned living in college and having to de clutter because you felt like you were drowning in it. I swear I felt that so hard that I immediately went into my kitchen and just got rid of everything that was unnecessary, it was a problematic area for me and afterwards I was like okay let's do this thing and proceeded to put your stuff on in the background and start working on my entire apt. Oh, Caroline. First, I am sorry to hear that you have been crying because I don't like to see anyone be sad. On the other hand, crying is really good for you to get out those emotions that need to go away. When this video first popped up and I saw fourteen days free and twenty five off the first month, I got very excited, because I thought you were doing a design consultation business where you would do whatever and people would pay to be in that group. Then I found out it was for working out, which is also very good, but not as fun as designing. So in the future, if you have time and think you can do a design group like that, I would love it. I love your videos. I hope you can stop crying soon (when you are ready) and feel good for a while.

I love the practice of "Design Tinder"! And using adjectives instead of defined styles is so smart, especially for beginners or those less familiar with interior design styles. One thing I had to learn when I worked with a designer almost 20 years ago was to make sure you're picking images where you like the actual elements and not just how clean and tidy the space looks! Aesthetically in a magazine or on a screen, I love the look of a spare, minimalist space, but in my 3D home, I want slightly messy bookshelves and chairs that are more comfortable than polished. But once I looked at enough images to hone down to the styles of things, the colors, the spatial arrangements, etc that I liked, it was easier to define what my specific likes were (instead of just picking all the spaces that looked the most clean and organized). Your space shows your skill at mixing different styles effectively, and this video does an excellent job of explaining how to do that well. Awesome job!

Another good way to define your style is to start off with your no-nos - anything you‘d absolutely not want in your space. For me, that’s shiny surfaces, chrome, round mirrors, anything plastic, the color yellow, new furniture, dark colors, 70s. Which results against my will in some kind of a muted shabby-chic style but I try to control myself.

I’m a grandma, not sure what grandma art but it sounded like a negative , I like modern, antiques and mid century all rolled up in one, not sure what you would call that. Grandmas have good taste!
@linesch25692 ай бұрын
I think Caroline herself LOVES „grandma art“ (by which they mean old paintings framed in dark wood frames etc.) and it’s more about preferences if, for example, Luke is not a big fan :) I don’t think it was meant to be negative about grandmas‘ general art preferences as well all know they can be amazing 🙌💕
@loriwhinery32102 ай бұрын
@@linesch2569 your right! I hear a lot of comments on KZbin about this isn’t your grandmas house or this smells like a grandmas house. I shouldn’t be so sensitive, I know who I am. 😁

It sounds like you have amazing taste! I think when my brother said “grandma art” he just didn’t have the words to describe “antique” art - which is a lot of the art he sees in MY home, and it’s not for him. But if that’s what grandma art is, I love it!

Woman, your vulnerability on this, and in general… I am so here for. I have been watching your videos for about a year or maybe more. I love watching your videos so much because, the way you talk, I get so wrapped up hearing and feeling what you say. The way that you design and teach others tips based on not just what’s cute or in style but also relate how to make things functional for how our individual brains work makes things make sense and become more intentional. Little shit like having drop zones, having dynamic heights and layering, not putting too much onto one wall, the list goes on what I’ve learned from you. Thank you for doing what you do. It’s fucking awesome and very inspiring.

It’s really awesome the way you tackled the “language” barrier, because to non-professionals, outside of the known vernacular, they have a very specific image in their heads that they can’t always elucidate despite them knowing what they are talking about - taking the time to decipher what styles your brother was talking about really helped nail those ideas, and that’s a beautiful thing.

Moving house soon and been looking for a singular ‘label’ for our style, the adjectives idea has been really useful and helped open up our design choices. A good reminder that, whilst cohesion is important in a space, it is equally important that the space represents your own personal tastes. Thanks!

Hi Caroline, Love your authenticity! Can’t get enough of your videos. Could you please do a video on how to implement your chosen colour palette? So you don’t saturate your space in the wrong colour, how to pick the dominate colours vs smaller accent pieces. Thanks!

Caroline! I am so grateful for you. You are my favorite designer. You give me courage and insight. I have paused a room remodel because I just couldn't figure out where I was getting mentally stumped. I was reading through your list of design words and as "edited and classy" came into sight I had a eureka moment and said, "CALM! I WANT MY ROOM TO BE CALM!" Now, I know the direction I need to take. Thank you.

Great video, that part about the wedding and "don't wait until your forever home to experiment, start with your dorm, rental, parents' basement" was so real, i think i'm actually gonna do at least the first two exercises. i usually watch ur design stuff more in passing bc i do live w my parents but there probs stuff i can do while in here too and btw lol i also watch my own videos, less to motivate me bc they are lowkey depressing asf but they are kind of "messages to future me" in a way and i do find them insightful many times, maybe it's too masturbatory but oh well

I’m usually disappointed by videos on how to find your personal design style, because there just isn’t enough detailed information on how to narrow it down. This one really helped me! I was finally able to nail down an aesthetic that I love and filter out all the inspiration I’ve used in the past that fell flat for me when executed. Thank you so much ❤️❤️❤️

The same way you remember that hotel in Italy, I will never forget my 5-year old cousins reaction when I showed him my room at my parents house. He walked in smiled and breathed a huge sigh of relier followed by a wow 😂. It was nothing special small room with gold damask curtains and bedspread and nice wooden furniture. However, it reminds me always how much we must love our space as it is mentally rewarding not just visually pleasing.

This was such a helpful video! I just spent a couple of hours on Pinterest, figured out two of my lifelong design inspirations (my grandmother’s clean cozy white-and-honey colored house and an old Japanese farmhouse close to nature and light), and now I’m narrowing down a few words to describe my style. So inspiring, thank you!!

I'm currently checking out your pinterest board because what you said about not knowing what you like if you hadn't been exposed to it yet made me want to get exposed to different styles. I have saved 12 pins and they're all cohesive but I don't like the overall style they show me, which is fine because I realized the board I already had is probably my timeless style I really do love and I don't need to branch out. I love your ideas and the board. At the same time I feel like your board, even if it is showing many different styles, is full of your own style in little ways. That also made me realize I hate wood for myself of any kind haha. Thank you again for the board and the video, I had a lot of fun!

I love your videos! Your advice is so practical and your presentation style is so practical, down-to-earth and relatable. I love it! One thing I've never heard anyone talk about when talking about finding design style is allowing the architecture of the home (if prominent) to influence the decor. For example, I LOVE the airy pastels of Swedish farmhouse decor, but I live in an old Spanish Colonial in South America. Imposing Swedish farmhouse just wouldn't go, so I've learned a new way of decorating and it fits, because it blends well with my house. :) Just wanted to put that out there.

I don’t personally feel the need to nail down my style because I don’t need to explain it to anyone I’m just living here, but this was actually so helpful for trying to explain the process to a friend who has never cared about “design” but just bought his first house and asked how I make it look nice. Totally going to go through the process with him using your board, can’t wait! Thanks for the resource!!

Love your videos; these were really helpful tips. Also want to say, your brother has talent as well. Love the vase. Go ahead and cry, and know that we all do, and sometimes for no reason at all. It's just life. We don't judge our happy emotions, so why do we judge our sad ones so harshly? Nobody questions when I'm smiling or laughing. It could be I'm just covering up deep depression, but when I'm crying I'm honestly conveying an emotion.

So true. You made me think of the song; "Tears Of A Clown" since I will go about feeling deeply depressed and no one would notice, as I smile when engaging with a store clerk, the homeless Veteran in my neighborhood, petting pups; because life goes on, with or without us.😊

Your brother is a wood worker, I'm not surprised be like Zen spaces. I was sanding my coffee table today and thinking about him, and also how Zen just sanding is. This is a great video and yes you can do stuff! Life is hard sometimes, frfr. The tip to think of spaces you've loved for a long time was so helpful. One of mine is a fancy high tea place called the Victoria Rooms, they had this blue velvet couch I loved so much I took a picture of it - 15 years ago! And just this week i finally got a blue velvet couch for my own home. I'm so happy. Getting that dark expensive vibe, dream come true

I found this incredibly helpful. Your inspo images were really high quality and different from things I’d found myself. I ended up choosing about 20 of them and there were three main types - freshness, woodiness and what I called’resolved’, which I think might be what you call layered - they were eclectic but everything seemed in harmony. I think that’s why i like your style so much 😀

I can so relate with watching your own videos before making another one! I used to read my “best work” before writing my new film reviews. It puts you in the mood and makes you confident about making it cause you have already made it so many other times. So yeah, nothing weird about it. And let’s be proud about our work in a world where everything is shortlived and ephemeral even though you’ve put so much time and effort and creativity into it.
