An interesting thing about Malay is that they are almost a pure Archer civ in midgame and usually go Arb and BBCs in early imp but their Late imp composition is very Food heavy. Managing the transition from an insanely good fast imp to an 70+ Farm economy is key to getting good results when the fast Imp doesnt work. And please get all your Blacksmith upgrades for karambits. no other units gets relatively more out of the Blacksmith than Karambits.

If you click up 2 villagers later to Feudal than you normally would, you would arrive at about the same time with Malay. You've spent an additional 100 food on those villagers, but they've both gathered about 60 resources total by the time you hit Feudal. This means, the bonus is very similar to the Bengali extra villager bonus for Feudal Age, and even better for Castle Age.

Besides the 2 vills gathering those 60 resources, I've never understood the actual problem some people have with the bonus, as, if you wanted to, you could just ignore the bonus, go up at the same time as every other civ, get upgrades earlier and idle your tc for the time of 2 vills and then have a generic civ with an generic buildorder, just slightly faster double bit axe e.g.. Of course thats technically not good, but in my Opinion it shows the great flexibility possible with the malay bonus. you can go fast and aggressive(which certainly is hard, but possible) you can go for great eco and you can go for a nice in between. However It's still the civ I have my lowest winrate with 11 I guess bc I always try to do to much at once when playing them.

Yeah, describing it as a weakness is wrong. If you prefer you can always turn it into a pure eco bonus by making an additional two villagers before clicking up, arriving at the same time with a much stronger economy That said, going for earlier timings with only one or no additional villagers can be very strong. You just need to be aware of the ressource downside if you do so. But that's not a weakness of the bonus or civ, just a particular downside of this greedy build order. Grab the additional villagers to be safe if you prefer the pure eco bonus without a downside.

@@IMortage Yeah, most of the time I go up with 1-2 additional villagers and everything's fine. As for going up to castle age in a shorter time than usual, beside making booming a bit awkward if you didn't plan for it accordingly, I fail to see how researching xbows and bodkin earlier could be considered as a weakness, even with the recent nerf. This only applies to feudal age, and as you mention you just have to go up with 24 pop instead of 22 for instance, and this bonus becomes pretty much identical to bengalis' one. Ofc you still lack something like 40 res over Bengalis by the point you reach feudal, but that's "nothing"

I mainly use the Karambits in 2 ways, first as a harassing/raiding unit, secondly this unit works quite well as an emergency base defense unit, easily spammable and counters siege quite well in large numbers.

Hey Hera, I love these civ overviews! May I offer one suggestion because these really deserve more views? I think it'd help to have the thumbnails for these series stand out a little more from the rest of your videos. At a glance, the thumbnails don't stand out to me (the same colours for the text as all your other vids doesn't help); but these should really stand out more because the level of production is so much higher than a lot of your other vids, I think! Have won plenty of losing team fights as Malay but using purely karambit warriors in the ending, leaving my team mates when the opposition's army is to strong to defeat, just spam karambits to multiple locations in they're base and it's like a plague they can't stop, need a few castles though. Annihilates enemy eco, don't even bother fighting they're army if they are defending, just outnumber and swarm

is the age up bonus really a draw back in any way though, or does it just feel that way? say you click up at the same time as your opponent. even if all you do when reaching feudal is, say, pick up double bit axe, but not building any military buildings and idle your TC for lack of res (and it's usually not quite that bad) until your opponent also reaches feudal, you're still better off. it feels wrong, but it's still better, isn't it? or am I overlooking something? Edit: I understand how it can be problematic if you're actually trying to take advantage of the power spike, but that's just because it's an unusually tight build - tight builds are hard to pull off and balances on the edge of what's economically feasible by definition

Agreed, grab two extra villagers before going up and you get the same timings as everyone else but with a strong eco bonus. Going up early is just another option, and a strong one, that comes with a particular downside as many special build orders do. But two additional villagers before clicking up and arriving at the same time is just a pure eco bonus compared to a generic civ. So I think calling it a weakness is wrong. It's just a trade-off you need to be aware off, and one you can avoid in favour of a pure bonus if preferred. One additional villager splits the difference and gets you there slightly earlier, but with decent ressources.

The typical open map meta is 18 -21 vill feudal right? So as Malay, if your opponent is likely to go up at +1 or +2 of when they do, so that you will hit Feudal at the same time or slightly faster but will have had more workers working for longer prior so you would hit Feudal at the same time with more vills and more resources? Therefore you will be able to match whatever your opponent does, and then you can beat them to castle with the vil lead? Why try to beat them to Feudal when you can match them, but have more things going for you?

Yeah u get same time but with 2 more vils. Problem is if opponent is say ethi they have an extra 200 res on u and same uptime so its still super dangerous. U have to keep in mind other civs have bonuses too

It's fair to point out other civs have bonuses too. And that's an important consideration weather you grab one, two or no additional villagers before clicking. That said, we still don't usually call a bonus a weakness just because it's sometimes eclipsed by other bonuses. It's certainly never better not to have the bonus. You always want it, and can decide how greedily you take advantage of quicker feudal/castle age or not.

They’re not really a hard counter, but as Malay, you should never be in a situation where the opponent is making arbs and you don’t have the tech to counter them. They’re great to add into your composition as a bit of a tank and a buffer so you can make arbs and skirms behind them.

yeah damage sponges are generally good regardless if its health or armor doing the soaking. Still, try to back them out and heal them up if they're getting low. That's generally good advice for any unit though.
