The ultimate LIDL glider RC conversion into an A-10 Warthog - Build Video

I still had some of the LIDL chuck gliders in the corner of my workshop, waiting for a crazy RC conversion. But what to do with them? When scanning through the different possibilities, I came across the A-10 Warthog. The shape of the LIDL glider wasn't too far away, but certainly it would need some modifications... so there I had my challenge: Build an A-10 Warthog from a LIDL chuck glider.

Yeah I know the EDFs would have been the cherry on the pie... and would have helped for the CG. But to be honest you don‘t notice the difference in the air. Check out the flight video on my channel.

Fantastic build, but slightly disappointed that you put props on it when small edf units are readily available and by the fact that the build was complete but you didn't include flight footage.

Well, I knew I would get these comments concerning the EDFs but I wanted to keep it a bit more simple and go for the props. There are a lot of arguments for using EDFs and probably one day I will upgrade it, but I have some other projects for the moment. For the flight video... it is just one click away 😜

Hi... Noch paar Fragen. 1. Muss ich etwas beachten wen ich 2 ESC benutze außer natürlich das.die Batterie dafür geeignet ist? Und wie schließe ich diese an? 2. Was für eine sprühfarbe benutzt du? 3. Kein Problem, hier ein paar Antworten 😜 1. Ein ESC wird ganz normal am Empfänger beim Batterieanschluss angesteckt, damit versorgt er ja die Fernsteuerung mit Strom. Den zweiten ESC stecke ich dann an einen freien Kanal an und mische dann beide Kanäle in der Fernsteuerung zusammen. Die Batterie ist ein normaler 3s Lipo und wird mit einem Y-Kabel an die beiden ESC angeschlossen. Das Y-Kabel hat auf der eigenen Seite einen Stecker bzw. Buchse zum Anschluss an die Batterie und von dort geht dann einmal plus und minus zum Stecker für den einen ESC und parallel plus und minus zum Stecker vom zweiten ESC. 2. ich verwende als Sprühfarbe Dupli Color Platinum. Ist nicht die günstigste aber ich habe damit bislang die besten Erfahrungen gemacht. Das EPP Material vom Lidl Flieger ist aber kein sehr gut haftender Untergrund und selbst bei der teuren Farbe passiert es dass sie teilweise abgeht 3. probier‘s mal bei Lidl im online Shop (www.lidl.de). Sind noch verfügbar 4. Das sind 5x4 mm Kohlefaserrohre von Graupner Artikelnummer 5225.5.4 Die gibt‘s bei vielen Modellbauversendern für 4-5 Euro Ich hoffe die Infos helfen Dir. Du kannst Dich aber gerne noch mit weiteren Fragen melden. Schöne Grüße aus Bayern

The battery is connected by a Y-cable with the 2 ESC‘s (ESC‘s in parallel). Each ESC is connected to one motor. One of the ESC is connected to the receiver on channel 1 (providing also the BEC power), the other one is connected to channel 5. Finally channel 1 is mixed to channel to have synchronized motors. You could at that stage also add differential thrust which I use on many of my twin motors, but requires more mixer settings

Hi... Just one question. Do you actually live in Bavarian? And if so where do you get those thin styrofoam boards... Cause I live in Brandenburg and in every hardware store around my place there are no styrofoam boards at all. In German (maybe a better explanation). Hi. Ich hätte da Mal ne Frage. Lebst du in Bayern? Wen ja wo bekommst du eigentlich diese dünnen Styropor Platten. Mein Problem ist das dass dort wo ich wohne (Brandenburg) es keine Styropor Platten in den Baumärkten gibt's... Naja es gibt halt nur 3mm Dämmplatten dennoch brechen diese sehr schnell, haben keine papier Beschichtung und sind auch nur 3mm dick... Ich hab auch schonmal im Internet gesucht fand aber meistens nur Sachen die fiel zu teuer waren oder wieder nicht beschichtet. Ach ja und wegen den Wohnort... Lebst du vielleicht ein Laden (modellladen oder wo man halt solche Platten kaufen kann ) in der Nähe von Fürth... Meine Oma könnte halt mir von dort aus paar Mal Mitnehmen... Mit FG aaron. PS sorry für die Umstände und unformalität... Oder wie man das nennt

Hi, ich antworte gleich auf deutsch. Bei diesen Platten handelt es sich um sog. Flite Test Foam Board. Kommt aus USA und wird in Deutschland von Graupner vertrieben. Kostet pro Platte um die 2 Euro. Daraus kann man tolle Sachen machen, meine Bronco die in vielen meiner Flugvideos vorkommt ist aus dem Material. Lohnt sich bei Flite Test auf der Homepage oder auf dem YT Kanal mal vorbeizuschauen. Ach ja, ich bin wirklich aus Bayern 😀 das Material bestelle ich mir aber online.

What paint did you use to spray it?

I used Dupli Color Platinum spray paint. After some tests with other spray paints I found this one was the best. Before painting I also used 400 grit sanding paper to roughen the Surface. But still you can scratch off the paint. It is really tricky to paint this type of Form.

Thanks! I wanted to minimize the complexity and therefore used normal propellers instead of fans in the nacelles. The nacelles are too close to the fuselage to use normal propellers. But I plan to do an upgrade using fans somewhere in the future. Ciao. [Automatic translation to Italian] Grazie! I know you are fans of the A-10 but with the configuration of the motors, (the ones who actually work) it makes more sense to call it a IA-58 “pucara”.

Just checked it on google and I have to say you are absolutely right, just remove the nacelles and the double vertical stabilizer at it is a IA 58 pucara. Would be worth a separate conversion project 😏

Hello, your video is amazing, i love it ! Great job. I'm new to this hobbi, and i wanna make a rc glider conversion like you. How do you choose your motor, the form of the wings, how do you get the dimension to cut the glider ?

Thanks a lot for your feedback. The way I selected the motor was a bit like „what do I have and what might work“. Basically you should have a rough idea of the amount of thrust you want and then to select your motor. This requires a bit of experience. So I would recommend to look for similar planes with similar flight performance and then use the same setup. The setup for my Twin Turbo is quite overpowered and not suitable for someone new to the hobby. For my first conversion I copied other conversions and then put more and more own ideas inside. This was already my 4th or 5th conversion. Finally there is not so much that can go wrong. It is only foam! Build it, test it, crash it, improve it… it is all part of the hobby!

Last recommendation. Don’t copy my A-10! It had some design deficiencies making it not the most stable plane on the planet. The best design so far is my Twin Turbo (Check the videos on my channel) but as said before it is a bit overpowered. There are plans linked in the video description which might help anyway. I also have 2 more designs (again check the videos).

Well I thought about EDFs but I have little experience with them (only my 70mm FT Viggen) and wasn‘t sure if such small diameter EDFs would give enough thrust. So I went the easy way... but I still plan to come back to my A10 and convert it to EDFs... one day!😜 But it was a real fun project to build and fly. Great that you liked it

Hi, also das ist nicht unbedingt meine Stärke, ich orientiere mich immer an ähnlichen Flugzeugen und schaue was die verwenden... oder ich nehme was ich gerade rumliegen habe. Wenn der Motor mal feststeht, dann einfach googeln, welche Luftschraube drauf passt. Die 60C sagen nur dass Du 60*Kapazität an Strom ziehen kannst, wobei viele Hersteller da etwas großzügig mit den C Angaben sind. Bei mir fließen rund 14 Ampere bei meiner Batterie mit 1,6 Ah und 70C bedeutet das ein Max. Strom von über 100 A, bin also noch weit weg. Es heißt aber immer dass die Batterien mit hohem C Wert mehr „punch“ haben. Ist aber auch nicht mein Fachgebiet 😜

Ist gar nicht so schwer, fang mal mit einfacheren Umbauten an... und man braucht auch keinen 3D Drucker, geht auch ohne... Ein guter Einstieg sind auch die Flieger von Flite Test, bin großer Fan von dieser Bauweise. Ich werde demnächst eine eigene Foamboard Konstruktion rausbringen.

@@actionfilmer3959 Hi, wenn Du möchtest, kann ich Dir so einige Tipps geben, denn ich habe bereits 5 Lidl umgebaut. Nr.1 Motor über den Tragflächen. Super für Bodenstart. Nr. Motor vorne ohne Höhenruder und ohne Seitenruder, dafür aber mit Flächenverwindung. Nr. 3 Motor vorne - ziemlich schnell Nr. 4 Motor auch vorne aber eine größerer mit geringer Drehzahl. Accu sintzt auf den Flächen. Propeller werden von mir selbst aus PLA gedruckt und zwar Zweiblatt und auch Dreiblatt. Sieht toll aus, aber die Leistung ist nicht unbedingt größer, dafür kann ich lange fliegen Accu 2200 3s. Und jetzt habe ich einen Segler angefangen mit einer selbst gebauten Schleppkupplung. D.h. ohne Motor. LG Hubert

Hallo Daniel, ich habe die Links zu den STL files in die Videobeschreibung kopiert. Kleine Tipps für den Nachbau: Höhenleitwerksgeometrie nicht verändern (verkleinern), sonst wird die Stabilität um die Querachse schlechter. Wenn möglich mehr Gewicht nach hinten bringen, ich musste rund 90 Gramm Blei am Leitwerk positionieren. Rumpfrücken vom Servo nach vorne mit Kohlefaserrohr verstärken (ca. 13cm lang) … bei mir ist der Rumpf genau hinter der Tragfläche abgebrochen, da der Kohlefaserstab auf der Unterseite hier endete … war quasi eine Sollbruchstelle 😂 war aber leicht zu reparieren. Viel Erfolg und lass hören wie der Bau geklappt hat.

Geniale Idee, mit 'ner Oberfräse (oder dem Ersatz dafür) die Aussparungen für Flächenholm und -Servos zu fräsen! Mal 'ne andere Frage: Haltet ihr eigentlich die lächerlichen neuen Gesetze ein (sprich Modell unter 250 Gramm oder mit Kennzeichen) oder jucken die euch nicht? So lächerlich sie auch sind, ich geh lieber auf Nr. sicher und fliege nichts über 250g, einfach weil ich keinen Bock hab hinterher verknackt zu werden weil ich mal 30 gramm oder so drüber war.

Danke, das geht wirklich erstklassig mit dem Fräser, man muss nur auf die Finger aufpassen! Die neuen gesetzlichen Vorschriften mag man finden wie man will, aber sie sind nun mal da und somit einzuhalten. Ich achte sehr darauf, dass ich mich immer im Rahmen der Vorschriften bewege. Ist aber auch nicht so schlimm wie es klingt, Kenntnisnachweis machen (geht online), Plakette drauf und an die Regeln halten, bzgl. wo man fliegen darf und wo nicht. Wenn man hier gefährlichen Blödsinn macht gefährdet man das ganze Hobby!
