Great review! And maybe this is a crazy question, but I do video editing and have always used a 16" screen on my laptops. However, you are showing a 14" and still editing yourself. I'm worried about the screen being too small for editing (primarily in Davinci Resolve). Do you find this to be a challenge, or would you recommend sticking with the 16" version? 🤔

After quite a bit of usage I do wish I had stuck with the 16" screen size. Having so many windows open can be a little overwhelming on a 14" screen now a days. I used to never have a problem with it and actually prefer smaller form factors.. but now I think bigger screen sizes are starting to grow on me because I am getting older and notice I'm squinting a little bit more when it comes to smaller text on the screen. I feel I used to make fun of my parents for using large phone screens and laptops and now I am slowly but surely becoming a large phone/laptop screen user. hahaha

Thanks for the no BS review! You put this review out 6 mos ago from when I’m viewing this and the M3 MacBook Pros have been around a while already. However, I’ve seen many reviews about the lower memory bandwidth and the M3 Pro chip. I’m retired and travel a lot and I’m looking for a laptop to do mostly photo and 4K video editing on. Several M3 Pro reviewers recommend getting this laptop instead, and pocketing the savings while getting faster memory access. I was really leery about getting an older model as I have several obsolete Mac’s still laying around (granted, they are pretty old). I’ve watched a bunch of 14” M2 Pro reviews, and yours is the simplest and most to the point. You really hit on the type of usage that I’ll be having, and you convinced me this is the laptop for me. Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Ain't no way the prices in the US are so much cheaper. The base model M2 pro with 16/512, 10 core cpu, 16 core cpu is 2479 here! That's euros, so approximately 2600 USD.

Just purchased my MacBook Pro M2 14" brand new yesterday for 1500€, which is a steal in europe! Unfortunately it's only the base version with 512GB SSD (slower than M1 because 1 chip instead of 2) and 16GB RAM. But I do think apple has a reason why they only put 1 chip in instead of 2 like in the m1 pro. This is more future proof for upgrades. They will disregard 8GB RAM stick productions and switch to 12GB sticks, same for hard drivers. No more 256GB, only 512gb base model will be the future for apple. (I think M3 still also start that base configuration, 12GB RAM, 512GB SSD)

I am a Data Science student who is currently confused between 15” M2 Air and 14” M2 pro with 16gb ram and 512gb ssd. The price difference is only of $270 with education pricing. I like the look and feel of air but love performance of the pro. Can you please suggest if I should pay the $270 and get pro ?

I feel like the M2 Air 15" will be the better value for your needs. The air doesn't have fans but the 15" has a big enough chassis to keep cool under load. Also consider spending that $270 saved on AppleCare! I had a screen on a 16-inch MBP replaced once and it was $800 without AppleCare.

I was in the same boat and ended up going with a refurbished 14” M1 Pro for less than a new 15 inch Air specd to 16/512. I absolutely love the 14” laptop. Worth it!

Just came in my recommended ( coming from the Netherlands ) nice review ! I ordered my self one 14 and 16 inch.. I think 15 inch would be the sweetspot.. how do you cooperate with the sharp edge where your palm rest.. also the really thick boxy feel of it.. to me it was so uncomfortable.. as well the 14 inch was too small 16 inch feels like a spaceshuttle also the weight.. what’s your opinion about that ?

Strangely after over a year of owning my M2, I have been randomly having issues with some of the keys on the keyboard making crunchy sounds. I have taken it to the Apple store many times and they have blown out what little dust they would fine and replaced the keys and I still have the crunchy sound. Even the techs said they were baffled to what was causing the sound. That's the only issue I have been having with this computer after over a year of owning.

Baseline 14-inch is completely fine for both 1080p and 4K. And yes the external SSD is the way to go!

HIi Ryan it was an interesting video. I was also looking for the right decision for MacBook. I am currently a data student who occasionally do video editing and data analytics, which feels like the intel 2020 MacBook Pro is not enough for me. I'm considering whether to buy the 14" MBP (16 GPU) or to wait for the next M3 chips as it is expected to be out by this year... Can you please suggest if I should buy the MacBook Pro M2 Pro for now??

The M3 series chips are expected to be built on a 3nm process resulting in more power and efficiency (more power, less battery, better thermals) M3 chips are rumored to come out early 2024 (pls take this with a grain of salt) if you absolutely can’t wait it out and need a solid machine for data analytics/video editing the M2 Pro is a great machine for that. Going from Intel to ANY Apple Silicon machine is the quantum leap upgrade. Holiday season is almost here so do try and find the best deal on a M2 Pro 😁
