I did the same thing 35 years ago, going down the stairs to the basement, two on one side and one on the other. This is a great space saver and prevents trips up and down the stairs to the store space i have in the basement.

We built a pull-out spice rack tgat goes between fridge & cabinets outta fence pickets & dowels... it turned out amazing & freed up so much cupboard space. We live in a rental, so it's a perfect solution for us!

We did pretty much the same thing in our kitchen about 27 years ago. We have doors on both of them (you think you have a lot of spices, haha), so when we open the doors, you are hit by a wave of spice odors. Wonderful! (Also, we live in California, so if we had our spice shelves like yours, any earthquake would spill them all over the place.) We also did the same thing in my office when we went through a remodel. Our contractor noticed that the original construction did not provide a proper support for the 2nd floor (house built in 1915). So, he put up a series of paired 2 x 6 (so 4 x 6), and I put in permanent bookshelves in between. Now, a whole wall is filled with books (no doors were added here). Always good to use space efficiently; congrats!

I enjoyed seeing this. I made an almost identical in wall spice rack a year ago. In my case I used clear pine boards and I varnished them instead of painting. My wife felt it was important to install horizontal metal retaining rods a couple of inches above each shelf so the spices can’t fall out on their own. (We sometimes have earthquakes here.) I used stainless steel 1/8 inch diameter welding rods which were inexpensive and yet look premium. I’m a bit OCD and since our new spice cabinet was in a main area of the kitchen I decided to install a cabinet door over the spice rack. We have Ikea kitchen cabinets and I was able to find an Ikea cabinet door that matched. Of course I ordered the door prior to making the spice rack so I could match the size to the door. An interesting caveat, the Ikea cabinet door cost more than the entire rest of the project. Ikea cabinets used to be quite inexpensive. Not any more. Anyway we are very happy with the end result.

YES, I LOVE THE KIDS OUT IN THE SHOP, and not playing some computer game. This is something they will take with them the rest of there life's. Nothing like being self sufficient. Painted maple? Oh well. For the back painted or not, i would go buy a sheet of luan floor underlayment for the back and just surface nail it to the back. You can search in the pile at the big box store and find some with a nice wood grain pattern that would look good with a clear or stained woodgrain and its cheap. Your daughters right noting is perfect, and imperfections my dad always said give a project a hand made feel. I actually was thinking about doing a project like that, i have a spot thats perfect for it, but ductwork for the second story is right behind it, and spices last longer if they are not exposed to heat, like by the oven. So mine would need insulation behind it. Time to teach them kids how to do some woodworking, i was about your daughters age when my dad was building boats in the basement. I'm going on 64 now. My 40 year old kids i would not trust with power tools, i didn't have a woodworking shop until they moved out.
