I know many people who bought this when they first came out. It works well from a sway control and ease of hookup perspective, but, in general, struggled to transfer more than about 400lbs of tongue weight of the tongue. People with pop-ups and relatively small travel trailers lived it, but for people with larger, heavier trailers and, therefore, higher tongue weights, the Andersen hitch simply couldn't transfer enough weight to resulted the front axle load and reduce the rear axle weight. That's what I'd like to see in your second test: set it up, then do your three passes on a CAT scale to determine the effectiveness of the weight distribution on two or three different trailers.(small, medium, and large).

I echo gijoecam's thoughts. I bought the system to use on my 8000 lb TT and my half ton truck. I could never get it set where I felt comfortable towing for longer than a short trip (few hours). Even after buying my ram 2500 diesel, I tried using the Andersen hitch. my issue was getting the truck and trailer aligned such that you did not overload one of the red bushings. too often I had one bushing squished resulting in a very tight chain and the other bushing was uncompressed with a little slack in the chain. I have since gone back to a more traditional style (won't mention manufacturer) since it is easier to hook and go. You know that feeling you get when you are trying to hook up your trailer Sunday morning, you are blocking the road, and someone rolls up trying to leave. Yeah, that's what I dealt with with the Andersen. I felt like l was making others wait on me while I was trying to get the chains balanced. good company, good service. very good tech consultants.

Makes perfect sense if you look at the length of leverage it uses to transfer weight. Bars are long and use downforce of the tongue on the ball where the fulcrum is . The Anderson hitch draws the trailer tight to the ball forcing the lock jaw against the ball where the fulcrum is. I believe this lateral force against the lock jaw is the problem. It wasn't designed for that and I don't trust it.

I'm glad to finally see a really good video about the Andersen system. We used the Andersen hitch with our then RV, a 33-foot Wildcat Maxx trailer, and it worked great. The best towing hitch we'd ever used even in strong crosswinds. I loved how quiet it is with no more groaning and clanking like every other hitch we'd ever used, been RVing since the mid-1990s. Last year we moved back to a 5th wheel, a 33 foot long unit and this weekend we will be installing our old Andersen hitch on our new Winnebago, Micro Mini, they come with 2 5/16 couplers now, our second RV for all those places that the 5th wheel is too big to get in to. My ONLY gripe with the hitch is that it can be a bit finicky hooking back up if the truck - RV isn't pretty straight on to each other.

I have a 2017 F-150 with tow package and brake control from the factory rated at 6200 lbs. So I had to buy small. This is also my first towable Rv of any kind. I've always used a bar system but that's what I was brought up in using since I was 14 and was helping hookup. Still have those in my barn. I see from all the comments that everyone is liking how these work, I saw where one guy pulls a 38' trailer with his now that seems a lil extreme for this product in my opinion, but I don't know all there is about how this system is made like is the shank solid or is it very thick and by the way it's made what the bottom triangle piece is made of seems as though it would flex when on such a large trailer. On one that large I think I'd rather stick with the bars that slide into a solid shank. But I'm glad to see this for smaller trucks and trailers and you are explaining it very well

We bought an Anderson WDH three years ago and on our 17' 3000 lb trailer it works just exactly as advertised. It's lighter than a trundle type, easier to hook up, and the draw bar/ball assembly is easy to pull off the truck when not in use. But we rarely use the "socket" that comes with it. Instead we do what many trundle WDH users do (providing the tongue jack has the weight capacity). We latch the tongue onto the hitch ball, then using the tongue jack raise the truck rear up a couple inches, then put on the chains and tighten them by hand. Now some electric jacks with plastic gears may have issues with this, but ours is a hand crank and seems to have no problems. After tightening the nuts up by hand, we lower the jack, the chains go tight and share the weight with the truck, and we're off and running. Unhitching is the same process in reverse. So far this has worked well for us, especially since we bought the Anderson more for the sway control than the WDH function. We still carry a ratchet and the socket for those rare times we found ourselves with the collar skewed crooked because of how we had to pull into the campsite. We're still strong fans! The packaging of this WDH is pretty impressive. I bought mine from an Anderson dealer (a specialist hitch and trailer place) but it turned out I was the first person to order one. When I went to pick it up the tech's and salespeople were amazed that there was a WDH in that small a box -- the woman at the desk said it was the first time she could hand a WDH to a customer and normally she got one of the guys to haul the 100-150lb WDH out.

My wife and I purchased this hitch about five years ago when it first came out. We loved the weight, ease and cleanliness of use. However, this is a head's up for those that have a F150 crew cab short bed. We had serious sway issues with this hitch with our short bed. I met with a Rep from Andersen and he acknowledged there was an engineering issue they were working with Ford on. Andersen actually bought our hitch back which I was really impressed with. We were bummed it didn't work out because there were a lot of positives with the hitch. I just wanted to share in the event the issue isn't resolved.

Kyle Ginder not sure but from what the Rep told me, it had something to do with air flow under the bed. The engineering is above my pay/knowledge grade! There didn't seem to be an issue with the 6.5 bed though.

Amazing customer service. Great product for the right applications. I could not get it to work with my 30 Ft Airstream. I spent several weeks trying to get it right. As I mentioned, Anderson is a great company. If you are pulling a travel trailer that is toward the limit of a 1/2 ton truck. I would consider the ProPride first. Could not be happier with how my truck drives now with the Propride.

This is a great hitch. I switched to it 6 months ago. I use it on a 38 ft outback travel trailer with a ram 2500 with Cummins. The bounce you talked about is gone with this hitch. Very easy to dial in. In fact I had a situation on our big trip this summer where our fresh water tank filled up with out me knowing over night. Hooked up and got on highway and the sway was bad. Way worse than day before. Was able to crank an extra thread on the bolts at a truck stop and all sway was gone. 30 seconds and fixed. Until I could fix the original problem. Your friend will love this hitch.

I agree, that's a great hitch and they will be happy with it. I can't compare it to any other, because I have not used any others. I recently bought a 32' bumper pull as a first travel trailer from a dealership in West Texas. I live 8 hrs away in Southeast TX. The dealership was going to sell me a WD hitch installed for $500. I looked it up on Amazon and it was as $200 hitch. So then I read some reviews and watched some videos about the Anderson. I bought one on Amazon for $500 (2 .5" receiver) and installed it myself in the dealership's parking lot before I left. I was worried about heavy cross winds in West Texas because I had never towed a travel trailer at all. And I had a long drive. Only at some of the worst spots did I experience any sway at all, and it was very minimal. And it only came from heavy cross winds. I never felt the slightest movement from a passing 18 wheeler. And once I got out of the open area of West Texas, there was no sway at all the rest of the way home. I'm sold on the Anderson.

Own one (for my F150 and 7000lb TT) and you have done a good job of describing this WDH. However you still want a torque wrench and 1-1/8" and 15/16" sockets (and a breaker bar) to attach the hitch assembly -- the instructions say "approximately 150 ft-lbs" of torque if you are a good guesser. If you have a well equipped tool chest you may have these (I didn't have the sockets) or you might be able to use adjustable wrenches but you need leverage (and why the breaker bar is useful).

I have this hitch with the 3" shank. I moved up from a Blue Ox WDH to get the 3" shank, which nobody but Andersen produced at the time. I pull an 11k GVWR toy hauler with a 2017 F-350 CCLB SRW. Tongue weight is between 940 lbs and 1,450 lbs depending on if I have my ATV in the garage or not. I'm usually loaded close to the GVWR. Installation was fairly straightforward. Avoid the temptation to scoot the trailer brackets too far forward on the trailer's frame, towards the truck. If the trailer brackets are too far forward it limits how much you can adjust the chains. You'll run out of threads before you get enough force. My only challenge during the install was that the trailer brackets were a couple millimeters shorter than my trailer's frame. That made it difficult to get the bolts into the brackets. The red "springs" need to show a bulge. If there is no bulge then you don't have enough force and you'll probably get bounce and maybe not enough sway control. Sway is non-existent. Mission accomplished on that issue, which was my primary reason for using a WDH. Bounce is controlled but is still there a bit. The more force I put on the hitch the less bounce there is. Going from no WDH to the Andersen, the bounce is about 80% controlled. Is this hitch easier/faster/safer to connect? I don't get a hernia from carrying it so that's a win. Once you get used to it, the time to connect is a bit less than a traditional spring bar WDH. It's safer than my Blue Ox in that I don't have to muscle the spring bars into place. When uncoupling there is no chance of injury should the spring bars overpower the lever. There is no chance of pinched fingers. One thing to note is that the ball and coupler need to be free of grease. Do not grease either one. The coupler needs a solid grip on the ball so that the ball can prevent the coupler from turning (preventing sway). Not having grease on the ball/coupler can be an issue if you use multiple ball mounts with the trailer. Keep them clean. This WDH has many unique features...my favorite is its compactness and weight so unless I am hooking/ed up I remove the hitch assembly and chains and stash them in my TT's storage. However it has a major drawback (and the source of the complaints you will see on other forums)...the amount of sway control is controlled by the weight on the ball so if you are towing long and heavy (a common problem with 1/2 tons) the more you distribute weight the less sway control you will have. Other systems use 2 independent mechanisms which is always a better thing.

They have since came out with a newer improved version of this hitch. It now comes with a ring around the hitch up top because the cone sleeve keeps creeping out and wrapping cause customers to keep reordering free cone replacements. If you have this system, call them and they will send you a whole new hitch with the improvement.

Curious which one is better in your opinion in controlling sway? I currently just bought a Husky Center line. Very much like the equalizer. It is much better controlling sway that my last bar/chain/friction device setup. But a pain to setup/hitch up, noisy, and heavy. Wanna try the Andersen on my travel trailer with 1000 lb tongue weight, 7600 lb overall. Have heard the Andersen does not do well with high tongue weights

I am buying a 2021 forest river Wildwood X-Lite 263BHXL and I have a 2016 Ram 1500 sport 2wd with tow package. I am having trouble deciding between the e4 equalizer hitch and the anderson weight distribution hitch. I have read more pros for the anderson hitch as far as ride comfort as far as reducing the bounce witch happens with normal weight distribution springs arms. I have only personally experienced the weight distribution hitch ez lift which did cause bounce when I encountered bounce. Any advise would greatly be appreciated.

I haven't tried the Anderson hitch, although I do have and love the Anderson Ultimate Fifth Wheel hitch. I did have the Hensley Arrow trailer hitch 20+ years ago and absolutely loved it. I was towing a 31 foot travel trailer and it was awesome for sway control compared to before I started using it. I'm sure they have made it even better after all these years.

The guy who used to run Hensley has a competing product that's an improved version - the ProPride. I have one and use it...it's awesome. It's truly "no sway" using physics, not friction.

One difference between the Hensley and the Andersen is the price. The Hensley is around $2500, the Andersen is $5-600.00 depending on which kit you require. Engineering wise the are completely different.

I purchased this hitch for use with my 36' Dutchman Travel Trailer and it initially worked fine. However, within a year the friction material came loose in the hitch ball and the compression bushings began to lose their integrity. I contacted Andersen multiple times and while they would sell me replacement parts, there was no warranty offer and the parts they were trying to sell were not improved from the ones that failed. I gave the hitch away to a friend with a lightweight travel trailer who was willing to purchase replacement parts and he has been happy using the hitch for the last 5 years. So my experience is that the hitch will probably work for smaller trailers but if you have a problem, Andersen does not stand behind their products.

Hi!! Love your vids. Very informative…. Talking about informative…. I was about to buy the Anderson WDH to install on my 2021 Sierra towing an 2020 Apex 215RBK. When I was ready to tap the Buy button, I saw a comment by a user saying that his tailgate hit the tongue jack… Is there a way to fix this inconvenient issue? Right now I have a Husky (super heavy and soooo noisy), but the ball sits just far enough on the hitch to let the door open completely when hitched…. Any ideas or tips from you and or Andersen? The only real way to avoid that is if your Hitch is placed further back, which increases the lever action your Trailer puts on your truck as well as increases Sway.

I used the Anderson Hitch for a couple of years when I had a travel trailer. It was awesome, however, we upgraded to a 5th wheel 3 yrs ago and now use the Andersen Ultimate. I still have the Hitch and have thought about selling it on Ebay.

The Hensley Hitch starts at $2320 reconditioned when available. And looks to be very complex. Certainly doesn't seem to be installable by the average RV owner.

When you get it and you think its tight you prolly need to go s little tighter. When I first got mine I wasnt tightening it enough and had minimal bounce control which is all I really wanted since my 1ton didn't need the weight distribution feature. Just keep tightening it till the red bushings swell or bulge

Daniel Edwards yes, I had purchased it. It was nice. Simple setup, easy hookup and disconnect. Only downside was I don’t think the sway control is quite as good as the Equal-I-Zer we had. But I didn’t play with the tongue weight before we got rid of camper. The Andersen’s sway control is dependent on tongue weight. Think we needed to move some weight forward for more tongue weight, or maybe a touch less weight distribution cranked in

Also I was watching some of your older videos from when you first got your new f-450 and you said that the front axel is an extra 3 inches on each side. I don’t even own a truck but I was curious if that too helps with the sway when towing your rv? I’m assuming it must.

quick question to anyone, on the Anderson hitch, there are 2 receiver pin holes, Does it matter or have an effect on operation if you choose the hole closer to the truck or farther, If I use the 2nd hole to put the receiver pin through, it actually allows me to open my tailgate but I'm curious if this matters, I'm assuming not or they wouldn't have put the option there for 2 positions but wanted to get thoughts.

I'm interested in this system simply because of the trailer I'm looking at (don't own it yet). The trailer I'm talking about is the US Cargo ULAFTX, 7x14 with the 30" vee-nose. This configuration puts the tip of the vee-nose about 10" +/- from the ball....YES, it's that short! Problem is, they have this trim that covers the sides of the tongue and frame and there's no place to attach those spring bars or levering arms. I asked the trailer factory about this, and they simply said you can't install a typical WD hitch....CAN'T! What's a person to do? It looks like this Andersen system is the only option I have, and I'll need to weld those anchor brackets to the frame (5" frame height). Any thoughts? Have you any experience with this scenario?

@@POOL_EXCAVATIONS It’s about 8200 full of equipment. It pulls it like nothing. 12,500 max tow with 36gal tank tow mirrors 4 door extra long bed. I was pulling it with a v10 excursion but I traded it for the f-150 and my buddy sold me his propride trailer hitch and it pulls much better now.

There's a review on Amazon with pictures showing the sleeve for sway control coming out of the hitch assembly over time. Any ideas why this could occur and do you see this as an issue.

My theory is that the trailer being towed was balanced poorly and the excessive weight on the back caused the ball assembling to pull up causing the sleeve to work its way back. That's really the only way an issue like that might occur.

This actually a feature of this WDH. You can replace the anti-sway mechanism as it wears which you aren't going to do with the other WDHs in this price range or higher. The Anderson web site has videos on the procedure.

On my trailer, the emergency brake cable is mounted on the inside of the frame right where my brackets for this hitch need to sit. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it possible to move the emergency brake cable somewhere else?

I don't understand the sway control. If it makes it "very hard to rotate" then how do you turn corners with it and for sure how do you backup with it. It has to turn A LOT ! Also hard to believe that chain is as good as a steel bar, seems like a lot of pressure/tension that would snap the chain. Must have a hell of a rating.

in terms of sway control both systems are pretty much on par, the advantage of the Andersen system is that it weighs significantly less and because it does not use spring bars you will not get bounce or hop. both are very good and reputable systems. It ultimately comes down to set up, convenience, and bounce.

If you're satisfied with your Blue Ox, keep it. My trailer came with a Blue Ox. I switched to the Andersen to get a 3" shank. The Blue Ox worked fine.

Thanks for the good video. You do not explain how this transfers weight, nor do you claim to. I expected that from you but should not have. My fault. However, you kind of scratched the surface of the concept enough for me to realize that the trailer is hanging from the chains and pushing against the back of the ball to distribute the weight. So far, from watching videos and going to their website, I haven't seen a good explanation of the mechanics of this or the price. There must be a video showing this, but I just haven't found it yet.
