IMPORTANT STUFF I FORGOT OR DIDN'T KNOW: - Be sure to configure your recording and metronome options in the transport panel at the bottom of the app window. These are the little icons found between the "sync" parameter and the time signature selector. - For multi-output instruments, you can link each MIDI track (arranger window) to the corresponding audio output channel (mix window) by clicking the track, opening the inspector (the "i" icon), and using the "Channel" parameter (above the fader and below the input/output selector) to select which channel this MIDI track corresponds to. Thanks to user "kevin thomas" for this info!

You missed something, which is to link the track(Omni, Kontakt) with the channel strip by opening inspector and linking the tracks with the corresponding channel so when you hide the track on the timeline view the channel strip also hides (works with volume and pan) and if you change the colour or name the channel strip also does the same, this is very time-saving. You can set scenes for channel strips.

How do you get that to save when you close Studio One, or save the setting as your Default preset and load it in, or open a new song and import this part of song data? It'll route save the output routing in Kontakt but every time I try this each track in the arranger needs to get linked to the proper mixer channel each time.

Not quite following here... What needs to be done manually to link tracks with channels? (Step by step). And why aren't mixer channels automatically linked?

Bro, generally every plugins have 1 output but kontakt or other similar plugins has 16 outputs, So not only Studio one but every other DAW does not give this feature has default, you should manually link every outputs to each channels. I have no idea why they don't give this feature as default but the stock drum plugin is linked automatically.

Perfect. Made me update my own template. Although I do more bussing than instruments, the value is the same. The idea some may have about "forcing yourself into a workflow" seems, to me, an indicator of someone who hasn't been working in audio long enough to have found their definitive workflow. When you've been working in it long enough you've built your own style and workflows from doing things long enough to know what works for you, and it was never forced then. A template doesn't change that, it only makes your own process more efficient and this leads to more time and focus to dedicate to creating and mixing music consistently and more enjoyably. Great video.

So i can later put all tracks in their relative folders in the end 3) 100s of chord progressions. So that i can later pull it and experiment.

Another trick you can do is: Add Tracks, set the type to Instrument and set the count to what you need, the input to the VSTi you are targeting, and select ascending, that way it will create tracks already linked to the correct midi out

Useful tips. Thanks! I find the "by VST" approach a bit odd though. What if you have, say, one bass line in Omnisphere and another one in Serum? I like to have them side-by-side. So I organize folders by type: Drums, Bass, Pads, Leads, Vocals, etc. That makes it harder to decide to pre-create certain instruments in each folder without going really overboard. Maybe I should have both then: empty "type" folders up top, and then per-instrument folders (like you have) underneath. And then drag an instrument track to, say, Bass folder when needed. In any case, great food for thought. Keep up the great work!
@maxkonyi4 жыл бұрын
I know exactly what you mean. In my workflow, I often end up exactly how you describe. I begin with things separated like this, and then start reorganizing as I go. By the end, I often end up with organization based on song sections rather than instruments, so that everything that goes together in one section is close in the arrangement window. All are good options! Thank you for the encouragement! 🙌
@AlexLapugean4 жыл бұрын
@@maxkonyi Maybe you can have best of both worlds? I know for example that in studio one you can have tracks stand-alone, as in not linked to a particular instrument. You can add the instruments in the instrument list, have console channels for them, all routed, but not designated tracks. The tracks can be created directly organised by instrument types (bass, pad, lead, etc), and you can just decide which synth you want to use and select it from the instrument list.

Very helpful! But why do you create a mixbus instead of using an existing master bus?
@maxkonyi9 ай бұрын
I do that for automation reasons. It allows you to automate the fader or anything else on the 'master channel' while still having the final master be untouched. I'm constantly using the little volume bar at the bottom of the S1 window to go between various volume levels while mixing, and this bar is a representation of the actual master fader. If you automate the master fader (and there are a variety of reasons why you might want to), you can no longer manually adjust it.

Hey Max, I really enjoyed the video. I'm just not really understanding the multichannel Omnisphere thing, can you explain how it works and why should I use it?
@Joseph-ot8rc4 жыл бұрын
You are using one instance of Omnisphere for 5 different outputs, which means that 5 different patches will be loaded on one istance of omnisphere, but what I've always heard is to use multiple istance of omnisphere, with one patch for each omnisphere plugin to reduce the CPU stress.
@maxkonyi4 жыл бұрын
@@Joseph-ot8rc That's exactly right. It depends on your computer specs. If you've got a beefy CPU, you can run multiple patches through Omni no problem. I wouldn't do a full 8, unless they're simple, but I often do 4 or 5 for every Omni instance. Do some experimenting and look at the CPU meters in S1 to determine how things are looking.

I'm on a custom built PC. I have multiple internal M.2 drives as well as multiple external drives. All project files live on a separate drive. Plugins and DAW live on the C drive. Best to keep that drive as clear and simple as possible. Distribute the read/write load across multiple drives. Most importantly, make sure you have a strong, modern CPU and enough RAM. I run 64gb of DDR5 RAM, which is overkill for most things. 32gb should be fine unless you have big sessions with many heavy, sample-based instruments. My CPU is a 14700k, which is very high-end, but I was on a 9900k for a long time and I had no issues in normal usage.

Should i always turn on the pre fader to yellow ? or it’s not needed ?
@maxkonyi Жыл бұрын
Switching on pre-fader means that changes to the fader will not change the amount signal going out of the send. When to do this really depends on what you're trying to achieve. Two examples: 1). Sending to a reverb. Keep this set to post-fader (not yellow) so that when you turn down the volume of the instrument with the fader, the reverb turns down in relation to it. This makes sure that the balance you create between the dry signal and the wet reverb signal stays consistent. 2). Sending a kick drum to a sidechain input on a compressor. In this case, you want to set how much the kick is sending to the compressor to create a specific amount of pumping or ducking in another instrumemt and you DON'T want changes in the kick's volume (fader setting) to affect that. That means you would turn pre-fader on (yellow) so that the fader position doesn't affect the send, keeping the sidechain compressor acting exactly the same way.
@tunesofeleven3 жыл бұрын

Hey Max. I just re-watched your video from last year on creating templates. A quick question came to mind. Let's say I created a song "the old fashioned way" without using a template to get it started. That is, I "built" the recording from the ground up. Now let's say I think to myself "Oh... I like the way everything is laid out in this song and would like to save the setup to a template for future songs... but I don't want the actual recorded material to be saved to the template". ... Can I do that? That is, can I save the setup from a song I have recorded without actually saving the recorded material? I want to save the "shell" of the program, not the actual material. Is that possible? Thanks Max!
@maxkonyi3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Nice to hear from you Frank (correct name?). Yes, you can do this. To be safe, you could use this procedure. 1). Close the song. 2). Duplicate the entire folder for that song. I'm referring to the folder which contains your .song file and all other related sub-folders for the song. This folder is found in your "Songs" folder within your main "Studio One" folder. 3). Rename the new duplicated folder and .song file so that you know this is the template version. 4). Open the new duplicated .song file 5). Delete all events, automation, FX, everything. Get it down to a template state. 6). From the S1 Browser, open the "Pool" and delete all the audio files found in there. 7). Save the session as a template like you normally would. 8). You should now be able to access this template when starting a new song. Test it out and see. 9). If all is good, you can delete the duplicated session, if you like. Let me know how it goes!

I have seen great engineers do both but no one really goes into the details beyond "take it from me, don't do it". I understand the reasoning behind it when it is done in Pro Tools where master fader inserts are post fader, but I'm not sure what the benefit is in Studio One where you have the option of both pre and post on the main out. I would really appreciate if you could put my confusion to rest once and for all :)

Does certain instruments require different channels output and others doesn't? For instance, you created different channels output for Omni but some of the others Instruments such as Battery etc are all in Channel 1. Does it all depends on that specific instruments inputs and output and how they reflect on the MIX view?
@maxkonyi4 жыл бұрын
It all depends on whether the instrument accepts multiple MIDI inputs. Omnisphere can run up to 8 separate sounds at one time, so each sound requires its own unique MIDI channel to keep note data separate. Battery is just a bank of pads and each pad is assigned to a specific MIDI note, which means you only need one MIDI channel to control all the separate pads. I use multiple MIDI tracks (all assigned to channel 1) just for visual separation and management of various drum/percussion patterns. Does that make sense?

Lol just set it up yourself. Why pay when you get shown how to do it?
@maxkonyi4 жыл бұрын
Haha I'm not even sure how to sell this since it's unique to my setup. Glad you like it though!

Problem with battery is you cant automate parameters.
@maxkonyi4 жыл бұрын
But you can! Right-click a knob or slider, select "enable host automation" or set a MIDI cc. Either use an automation lane or edit the cc directly in your MIDI clip/event.
