As a teenage girl in the 80s I would have gone through the moon if a cute boy wanted to see me. Only problem was the house phone and who will pick up that phone call first. If I did, then sneaking out was the next scary step without getting caught sneaking out and back in. The adrenaline was through the roof back then.

I've heard it said that John Peel was playing an Undertones demo tape in his car and when this track came on he was so emotionally struck by how good it was that he had to pull over 😄

Aye. I had no idea originally Fergal had this career before his solo stuff. Always loved that powerful voice of his. So when I first learned .. oh The Undertones was Fergal on vocals I was like "oh of course !" it made sense. I think this song is regarded pretty highly within the Punk genre, but also influenced a lot of rock and indie bands in the 90s and onwards. Great reaction as always. 51 years here and never stopped needing Teenage Kicks ! Big Kid !

Funny thing is, there’ll now also be a bunch of people who think of Fergal Sharkey as “that guy who does really good work campaigning about water pollution”. After he retired from singing, he went into music business back office work, did fine, and took up angling as a hobby - and got righteously angry about the sewage being dumped in British rivers, like you would if you wanted to fish in them. So that’s where he shows up in the news nowadays.

I knew about the Undertones before Feargal Sharkey was solo, so I think of Sharkey more as the lead singer of the Undertones than as a solo performer. The Undertones and the Buzzcocks were some of my favorite punk bands. I think my favorite Undertones song was "Jimmy Jimmy" from 1979, but I also liked "It's Going to Happen" from 1981, and a great later band comprised of members of the Undertones was That Petrol Emotion. Their 1986 song "It's a Good Thing" is also worth a listen. All these songs have a vaguely 60s-ish sound that a number of punk-influenced bands had at the time.

Took my son ,now 52 ,to his first gig to see them 40 years ago ,set him on his life long music journey ,still a die hard fan of all things punk ,and just last week they played at Solfest local to us so he saw them again still rocking it out ,

I just heard Sharkey being interviewed by Alistair Cambell. I learned that Sharkey was a Record Company Mogul and a genuine socialist . Yes Undertones is on the Top 500 Rolling Stones Record list . ONe of the best live coverts I was on was That Petrol Emotion which is undertones without Sharkey .

Sounds like One Way or Another (Blondie). They were both released in 1978, so it's hard to tell who stole that riff from whom, or if it's mere coincidence.
